COOL and Consumers' Willingness to Pay in the Fresh Produce Industry - Some Initial Impressions from the Field AgEcon
Sterns, James A.; House, Lisa; VanSickle, John J.; Wysocki, Allen F..
The debate about Country-of-Origin labeling (COOL) has centered on the projected benefits and costs of its implementation. This study uses data from a Vickery auction (n=320) to estimate willingness to pay for COOL. Preliminary findings suggest, on average, consumers value COOL, are not homogenous, and prefer fresh produce grown in the U.S.

The Impacts of GAFTA on Syrian Trade after Its full Implementation AgEcon
Baghasa, Hajar; Babili, Mahmoud.
Studies about GAFTA’s impact on Syria are still few, especially those about its impacts on the agricultural sector. In fact, concerned researchers are in urgent need to know recent developments in GAFTA implementation and to review its updated impacts on Syrian agricultural sector. Therefore, we, NAPC, suggested producing a working paper about GAFTA, including revision for its current situation, its implementation’s impact on Syrian agricultural trade, and economic regression for Syrian- GAFTA members trade comparing with Syrian- third parties trade (especially the EU). In addition to the general introduction, the paper also includes an evaluation to the Syrian position on the scale of GAFTA targets’ achievement. The paper checks commercial developments...

Who Benefits from Quality Labelling? Segregation Costs, International Trade and Producer Outcomes AgEcon
Jackson, Lee Ann.
This paper analyses the impact of quality based labelling on product prices, factor allocation and the resulting effects on producers within the context of an international trading system. A general equilibrium model, calibrated to 1998 data, describes United States and European Union labelling regimes for genetically modified agricultural products. The results indicate that the labelling choice of trade partners have large distributive impacts within national economies, as well as across countries and highlight the importance of using general equilibrium framework to understand the system wide impacts of labelling policies that differentiate products based upon quality characteristics. These results are essential for policy makers seeking to understand...

NEW CHALLENGES IN INTERNATIONAL DAIRY TRADE AgEcon
Mitchell, N..
This paper was presented at the INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS SYMPOSIUM in Auckland, New Zealand, January 18-19, 2001. The Symposium was sponsored by: the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, the Venture Trust, Massey University, New Zealand, and the Centre for Applied Economics and Policy Studies, Massey University. Dietary changes, especially in developing countries, are driving a massive increase in demand for livestock products. The objective of this symposium was to examine the consequences of this phenomenon, which some have even called a "revolution." How are dietary patterns changing, and can increased demands for livestock products be satisfied from domestic resources? If so, at what cost? What will be the flow-on...

PARAMETER ESTIMATION AND MEASURES OF FIT IN A GLOBAL, GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL AgEcon
Liu, Jing; Arndt, Channing; Hertel, Thomas W..
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely used for quantitative analysis of global economic issues. However, CGE models are frequently criticized for resting on weak empirical foundations. This paper builds on recent work in macro-econometric estimation, developing an approach to parameter estimation for a widely employed global CGE model, the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model. An approximate likelihood function is developed and the set of optimum elasticity values is obtained by maximizing this approximate likelihood function in the context of a back casting exercise. In addition, two statistical tests are performed. The first of these tests compares the standard GTAP elasticity vector with the estimated trade elasticity...

Economic Features of Canadian Organic Food at the Mass-market Retail Level AgEcon
Vercammen, James.
Over the past decade, Canada’s organic food industry has focused on the production of organic grains, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables and a limited amount of organic dairy products. Canadian organic grains and oilseeds are mostly destined for export, whereas Canadian organic fruits and vegetables and dairy products are mostly consumed domestically. With the exception of dairy products and a few other products such as breakfast cereal and fruit juice, Canadian companies have been mostly absent from the rapidly growing markets for processed organic foods. The extent to which these markets are currently being penetrated by Canadian organic food manufacturers and the size of the price premiums earned by these companies are worthy of investigation. Very little...

A Spatial Mathematical Model Analysis of the Linkage between Agricultural Trade and Deforestation AgEcon
Schmitz, Christoph; Lotze-Campen, Hermann.
Like agricultural trade, deforestation has increased tremendously throughout the past five decades. We analyse the linkage between both factors by applying trade and forest policy scenarios to the global land-use model MAgPIE ("Model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment"). The model predicts global landuse patterns in a spatially explicit way and uses endogenously derived technological change and land expansion rates. Our study is the first which combines global trade analysis with a spatially explicit mapping of deforestation. By implementing self-sufficiency rates in the regional demand and supply equations, we are able to simulate different trade settings. Our baseline scenario fixes current trade patterns until the year 2045....

General and partial equilibrium analysis of the impact of the Central America Free Trade Agreement on the U.S. rice sector AgEcon
Durand-Morat, Alvaro; Wailes, Eric J..
The market conditions proposed by CAFTA are likely to positively impact the U.S. rice sector. Despite the differences in the impact of the agreement, both analytical approaches, namely, partial and general equilibrium modeling, yield results in the same direction. The small difference in the results from both approaches suggests low income and cross-sectoral effects between the U.S. rice sector and other segments of the economy. U.S. rice production is likely to expand to meet an increasing international demand for this commodity. The U.S. rice milling industry should also expect benefits from CAFTA, expanding by 1 percent in the general equilibrium model and up to 8 percent in the partial equilibrium framework.

The Impact of Imports on Price-Cost Margins: An Empirical Illustration AgEcon
Lopez, Rigoberto A.; Lopez, Elena.
This article decomposes the impact of imports on domestic price-cost margins into separate price and cost effects. Using data from 24 food-processing industries, the empirical results show that although the direct impact of imports on prices is always negative, a positive net impact on price-cost margins occurs in industries characterized by low own-price elasticity of demand and diseconomies of scale. Further results show that the disciplining effect of imports is more preponderant the lower the degree of domestic competition.

Trends and Developments in India's Livestock Industry AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Gali, Jyothi.
Since India’s independence some 50 years ago, it has experienced considerable economic growth and structural change; a trend accelerated by its structural reforms which began in 1991. These changes are also reflected in trends in its livestock sector which has shown considerable growth in recent decades (especially since the late 1970s). There have also been major changes in the composition of the Indian livestock sector. The population of non-ruminants (particularly chickens) has expanded very rapidly and so their relative importance has risen substantially. Non-ruminant production (poultry and pigs) has increasingly become commercialised and industrial in nature. Trends and developments in India’s livestock industries since 1961 are outlined....

Exchange Rate Misalignment and Its Effects on Agricultural Producer Support Estimates: Empirical Evidence from India and China AgEcon
Cheng, Fuzhi; Orden, David.
There have been different degrees of exchange rate disequilibrium in the developing countries during transition or reform periods since the mid 1980s. The level of the exchange rate and its misalignment can have significant impacts on agricultural policy measures such as Producer Support Estimates (PSEs). In the conventional PSE analysis, however, the actual (nominal) exchange rates are used. There is general agreement that the use of actual exchange rates may introduce a bias in the PSE calculations, and that this bias can be substantial in some cases. But there is less agreement on the most appropriate alternative. In this study, we utilize various time series techniques to derive estimates of the equilibrium exchange rates in India and China from the...

Global Grain Stocks and World Market Stability Revisited AgEcon
Martinez, Stephen W.; Sharples, Jerry A..
The world's grain stocks are providing more world market stability than they did prior to 1978. Even though the volatility of world grain production increased since 1978, global consumption volatility declined. Grain production variability in the Soviet Union, United States, and Argentina appear to be major potential sources of instability to world grain markets, though much production variability in the Soviet Union and the U.S. is offset by their own stock adjustments. U.S. stocks have played a major stabilizing role on world grain markets. EC grain stocks in recent years have also played a stabilizing role. Reductions in U.S. and EC grain stock levels, a possible result of trade liberalization talks, could have important implications for market...

Agro-Exports and the Rural Resource Poor in Latin America: Policy Options for Achieving Broadly Based Growth AgEcon
Carter, Michael R.; Barham, Bradford L.; Mesbah, Dina; Stanley, Denise.
Concentrating on fundamental sector-level impacts that shape the nature of agro-export growth, this paper indicates how intrahousehold impacts fit into the analysis. Section 1 is introductory. Section 2 puts forward the conceptual framework needed to understand sectoral impacts of agro-export growth on the rural resource poor, impacts that can be divided into a small-farm adoption effect, a land-access effect, and a labor-absorption effect, all of which are interlinked. Section 3 explores the economic forces that shape the magnitude of the direct (adoption and land access) and indirect (labor absorption) effects of agro-export growth. Its chief message is that the agronomic and economic characteristics of agro-export crops interact with the intrinsic...

Alvim, Augusto Mussi.
