Emikpe,B. O; Akpavie,S. O.
The study into the pattern of distribution of the lung consolidation associated with common viral and bacterial pneumonia and their co-infection in subsaharan goats is scanty in literatures. Fifty apparently healthy West Africa Dwarf goats (WAD) six months of age were used for the experiment. The animals were divided into groups A, B, and C with 15 goats each while 5 goats served as control. Group A goats infected with 1ml of pure culture (1 X 109 CFU) of Mannheimia haemolytica MH A2, while group B with 1ml of pure cultured 106.5 TCID50 PPR virus grown in Baby hamster kidney cell lines and group C with 1 ml of PPRV and a week later 1ml of MH A2. The degree of consolidation or pneumonia as a percentage of the total lung volume was determined by visual...

Azevedo Duarte,Tonya; Almeida Barbosa Jr.,Aryon de; Arruda,Sergio.
There is evidence in both human and experimental infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that immunologic factors influence susceptibility to infection and the progress of the disease. The present study aims to evaluate the role of IFN- g upon inflammatory granulomatous response against M. bovis. To pursue that, C57BL/6 mice lacking the genes for synthesis of IFN- g (IFN- g-/-) and their wild-type counterparts (IFN- g+/+) were intravenously inoculated with M. bovis. The ability of M. bovis to survive and replicate in the liver and lungs was evaluated by counting colony-forming unit (CFU). The histopathological features of granulomatous inflammatory response in the liver and lungs were analyzed during the infection by M. bovis. Granuloma parameters...

Morphometric Study of the Proximal Femur Extremity in Brazilians International Journal of Morphology
de Sousa,Eduardo Branco; Fernandes,Rodrigo Mota Pacheco; Mathias,Marcelo Bezerra; Rodrigues,Mauro Roberto; Ambram,Albert James; Babinski,Marcio Antonio.
Brazilian populational aging besides higher life expectancy has increased the incidence of proximal femoral fractures. Treatment of those fractures uses implants which are based in measurements performed in caucasians, including the 135 degrees cervical-diaphyseal angle. Knowing femoral morphometry allows evaluating implants adequability. We performed our study using 110 Brazilian human femurs (49 right and 61 left). We excluded from the study: bones submitted to osteosyntesis, to prosthetization or those showing abnormalities or malformations which could affect its structure and shape. Bones were submitted to roetgenographic analysis and the images were scanned and transferred to personal computer. Measurements were obtained by AutoCad software and...

Cytogenetics and redescription of Graomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Chumbicha, Catamarca, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lanzone,Cecilia; Novillo,Agustina; Suárez,Natalia S.; Ojeda,Ricardo A..
The taxonomy, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of the genus Graomys are confusing. In this note we report karyotypic data for specimens of Graomys collected in Chumbicha, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Their karyotypes agree with G. centralis with 2n = 42. The individuals from Chumbicha are similar in morphology to G. griseoflavus but smaller. Our results suggest that Chumbicha's specimens are conspecific with G. medius. Moreover, we propose to synonymize G. medius with G. centralis. Other data of the genus suggest that the name G. chacoensis should be applied to specimens with 2n = 42.

Geometric morphometric analysis of skull morphology reveals loss of phylogenetic signal at the generic level in extant lagomorphs (Mammalia: Lagomorpha) Naturalis
Deyan Ge, D.; Yao, L.; Xia, L.; Zhang, Z.; Yang, Q..
The intergeneric phylogeny of Lagomorpha had been controversial for a long time before a robust phylogeny was reconstructed based on seven nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. However, skull morphology of several endemic genera remained poorly understood. The morphology of supraorbital processes in Lagomorpha is normally used as a diagnostic characteristic in taxonomy, but whether shape change of this structure parallels its genetic divergence has not been investigated. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the skull morphology of all 12 extant genera using geometric morphometrics. These results indicated that no significant phylogenetic signal is observed in the shape change of the dorsal and ventral views of the cranium as well as in...

Morphological and allozyme studies of midwife toads (genus Alytes), including the description of two new taxa from Spain Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; García-París, M..
Allozyme variation in 31 to 50 presumptive loci of 12 populations of European midwife toads of the genus Alytes show appreciable genetic divergences (DiNe from 0.29 to 0.72) among four groups. These groups correspond to A. cisternasii Boscá, 1879, A. obstetricans (Laurenti, 1768), A. muletensis (Sanchiz & Adrover, 1979), and a new species from the Betic mountains described here as A. dickhilleni n. sp. Smaller divergences among geographic groups of populations of A. obstetricans (up to DNei = 0.17) support the existence of three geographic units in Europe corresponding to the previously recognized subspecies A. o. obstetricans and A. o. boscai Lataste, 1879, plus a third one described here under the designation of A. o. almogavarii n. ssp. The analysis...

The choice of external morphological characters and developmental stages for tadpole-based anuran taxonomy: a case study in Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata (Blyth, 1855) (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) Naturalis
Grosjean, S..
The morphology of tadpoles has long received too little attention in taxonomic and phylogenetic contexts, beyond the use of Orton’s general tadpole types, despite the potential of larval characters for resolving problems in systematics. A possible explanation for this neglect is the ontogenetic variation of external morphology. In order to understand the value of larval characters in taxonomy and systematics, it is necessary to determine the developmental stage at which characters reach their definitive size, form and colour before meaningful comparisons can be made within and between species. Here I use the tadpole of Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata as a model organism to assess ontogenetic character variation. Morphometric measurements were taken, and...

A longitudinal study of two species of Belostoma Latreille (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae): allometry and ontogeny Neotropical Entomology
Iglesias,Mónica S.; Gaspe,María S.; Valverde,Alejandra C..
The multivariate allometric growth patterns from longitudinal data of leg and rostral segments of all instars of Belostoma elegans (Mayr) and B. cummingsi De Carlo are presented for the first time, and the allometric coefficients are compared. The segments of the middle and hind legs present allometric coefficients with opposite polarity to those of forelegs. This discrepancy in the ontogenetic trajectories may be due to the different functions of the legs. The foreleg main function is to capture of the prey, while the middle and hind legs are adapted to swimming. The relative size of rostral segments is an important taxonomic character in Belostoma. In B. cummingsi, the proximal segment is longer than the middle one, while in B. elegans they are subequal....
