Organic farmers grow grassclover in nature areas to remove soil phosphate for development of specious rich grasslands Organic Eprints
Timmermans, B.G.H.; Eekeren, N. van.
While worldwide the current reserves of phosphate rock are being exhausted, many agricultural and former agricultural soils in The Netherlands have been enriched by large quantities of phosphorus as a result of fertilization. In current nature development projects on former agricultural lands, it is thought that this phosphorus prevents development of target-nature types. Therefore nature organizations currently seek ways to remove it. We tested grassclover, organically managed by local farmers, as a tool to extract excessive soil phosphate from nature areas and reimport it into the mineral cycle agricultural farms. In a small scale experiment we have shown that grassclover with potassium fertilization can remove more than twice the amount of soil...

Fresh and residual phosphorus uptake by ryegrass from soils with different fertilization histories Organic Eprints
Oberson, Astrid; Tagmann, Hans U.; Langmeier, Monika; Dubois, David; Mäder, Paul; Frossard, Emmanuel.
Organic farming largely depends on animal manure as a source of phosphorus (P) and the recycling of animal manure globally is becoming increasingly important. In a pot experiment, using radioactive P labeling techniques, we studied ryegrass uptake of P applied with animal manure and water soluble mineral fertilizer to soils that had been cropped for 22 years according to organic or conventional farming practices. The soils differed in P status and microbial activity. Labeling soil-available P also allowed assessing the uptake from residual P that remained in the soils because of their different fertilization histories. On each soil, recovery of fresh manure P in four harvests of ryegrass shoots was lower than recovery of mineral P. It ranged from 24% to...

Organic Eprints
COLOMB, Bruno; Jouany, Claire; Prieur , Loic.
Soil phosphorus (P) fertility management in organic cropping systems is a debated issue in the general context of decreasing resources in a near future. A survey showed that in Midi-Pyrenees a majority of stockless organic cropping systems present overdrawn P balances. We investigated the impacts of P balances on the soil plant available P and nutrition status on the long-term field experiment of La Hourre (CREAB, Auch, France), which is representative of rainfed systems set on clayey calcareous soils. The changes in soil plant available P were monitored between 2002 and 2012 using P Olsen soil test. The results specified the declining rate of P availability in time and according to the amplitude of the negative balance. The levels of soil available P did...

From N2 fixation to N2O emission in a grass-clover mixture Organic Eprints
Thyme, Mette; Ambus, Per.
In organic dairy farming, a major N input to the plant-soil system comes from biological N2 fixation by pasture legumes, but knowledge is sparse on how much of the fixed N2 is lost from the pastures as N2O. Nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria are the main contributors to the N2O production in soils. Currently, no contribution from biological N2 fixation in legume pastures is included in the national N2O inventories, partly because of uncertainties in quantifying the N2 fixation in the pastures (Mosier et al., 1998). According to the guidelines issued by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), inventories for N2O emissions from agricultural soils should be based on the assumption that 1.25 % of added N is emitted as N2O (IPCC, 1997). The...

Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Fried, Padruot; Niggli, Urs.
An understanding of agroecosystems is a key to determining effective farming systems. Here we report results from a 21-year study of agronomic and ecological performance of biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional farming systems in Central Europe. We found crop yields to be 20% lower in the organic systems, although input of fertilizer and energy was reduced by 34 to 53% and pesticide input by 97%. Enhanced soil fertility and higher biodiversity found in organic plots may render these systems less dependent on external inputs.

Effects of digestate from anaerobic fermented cattle slurry and plant materials on soil microbiota and fertility Organic Eprints
Johansen, Anders; Carter, Mette S.; Jensen, Erik Steen; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Ambus, Per.
Soil from the Højbakkegård experimental (BioConcens) field was amended with nothing (control), each of two anaerobic digested (AD) materials (mixture of AD cattle manure and maize, mixture of AD cattle manure and cut off grass-clover material), raw cattle manure, and grass-clover in five individual treat-ments. The materials were incorporated homogeneously into the soil and sampled destructively at 0, 1, 3 and 9 days after incorporation. Besides, experiments were performed to follow the turnover of these materials, measured as accumulated respiration over a longer period. Measures included available organic soil carbon (cold- and hot-water extractable), soil mineral nitrogen concentration, soil pH, accumulated respiration over a two-week period, emission...

Subsoil loosening eliminated plough pan but had variable effect on crop yield Organic Eprints
Munkholm, Lars J.; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Subsoil compaction is a widespread problem on Danish arable soils and especially in form of plough pan compaction. Subsoil compaction may reduce crop yield and quality, increase negative environmental impact (e.g. in form of increased nitrogen leaching), and reduce soil workability and traffic ability of the soil. Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences has in a DARCOF project investigated the effect of subsoil loosening. The investigations were carried out in an organic crop rotation experiment at two sandy loams: Flakkebjerg (13% clay) and Foulum (8% clay).

DOK-Langzeit-Versuch Organic Eprints
In 1974, the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture (BLW) charged the former Federal Research Station for Agricultural Chemistry and Hygiene of Environment (FAC, Bern-Liebefeld) to set up a field trial in collaboration with the FiBL in order to compare the performance of organic farming systems. When FAC-Liebefeld was shut down, the Swiss Federal Research Station for Agroecology and Agriculture (FAL-Reckenholz) took over the responsibility for the DOK trial in close cooperation with FiBL. The DOK-long term trial - unique in its conception - compares the consequences of bio-organic, bio-dynamic and conventional farming systems in a randomised plot trial that has no other equivalent. Experimental samples are used by many other laboratories to develop new...

Season-long supply of plant-available nutrients from compost and fertiliser in a long term organic vs. conventional snap bean rotations experiment Organic Eprints
Owen, Ms. Josée; LeBlanc, Mr. Serge; Fillmore, Ms. Sherry.
In Canada, stockless organic vegetable cropping systems may use compost for fertility. However, information to guide growers about when nutrients become available in the soil over the growing season is lacking. Detailed analysis of plant nutrient supply was conducted over three years in a multi-site rotations experiment using two cropping sequences. The experiment compared conventional fertility treatment (synthetic fertiliser (1x N)) with organic treatments (annual compost amendment at a low (1x N) and a high rate (3x N)). Plant-available soil nutrients were captured using sequential two-week burials of ion exchange membranes. Ions were eluted and quantified. Variation in nutrient supply over time, and effects attributable to crop rotation and fertility...

Bodenbedingte Unterschiede bei der N- und S-Mineralisation von Hornmehl Organic Eprints
Laber, Hermann.
