Variations in nitrogen utilisation on conventional and organic dairy farms in Norway Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias; Hansen, Sissel; Bleken, Marina Azzaroli.
Reduced N-surpluses in dairy farming is a strategy to reduce the environmental pollution from this production. This study was designed to analyse the important variables influencing nitrogen (N) surplus per hectare and per unit of N in produce for dairy farms and dairy systems across 10 certified organic and 10 conventional com- mercial dairy farms in Møre og Romsdal County, Norway, between 2010 and 2012. The N-surplus per hectare was calculated as N-input (net N-purchase and inputs from biological N-fixation, atmospheric deposition and free rangeland) minus N in produce (sold milk and meat gain), and the N-surplus per unit of N-produce as net N- input divided by N in produce. On average, the organic farms produced milk and meat with lower N-surplus per...

Ampfer erfolgreich kontrollieren Organic Eprints

Preliminary evaluation of perennial forage legumes for organic farming in Finland Organic Eprints
Nykänen, A.; Leinonen, P.; Nykänen-Kurki, P..
In 1998-2001 fourteen forage legume species were evaluated for their productivity in mixed organic swards. The aim was to find new alternatives for red clover. Medicago falcata produced the highest dry matter yield (about 11 000 kg/ha/year). Dry matter production of Trifolium pratense, Trifolium hybridum and Medicago sativa varied from 2 200 to 10 600 kg/ha/year.

Utilization of nitrogen in legume-based mobile green manures stored as compost or silage Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Peter; Kristensen, E.; Odokonyero, K.; Petersen, S.O..
The utilization of nitrogen (N) in green manure leys can be improved by harvesting, storage and spreading of the plant material as manure in other crops. By green manure storage as silage, storage losses of N are lower than by composting. Also, a relatively high fertilizer value of silage N is achievable depending on the C/N ratio of the material. Nitrogen availability in green manure leys is higher after storage as silage compared to composting. Use of mobile green manures is mainly relevant in arable cropping systems without livestock where utilization of the roughage for animal feed or biogas production is impossible, as costs for ley/roughage harvest and transport can be relatively high. Our study showed that surface application of green manure silage...

Influence of level of self-sufficiency on the nutrient budgets of an organic dairy farm (OF0180) Organic Eprints
Cuttle, Dr Steve.
This is the final report of Defra project OF0180 In 1998, the organic dairy herd at Ty Gwyn, Trawsgoed was split into two herds to examine the physical and financial implications of adopting different feeding strategies and levels of feed self-sufficiency (DEFRA Project OF0146). A self-sufficient system (SS) in which cows were fed a high forage diet supplemented with home-grown cereals was compared with a system in which concentrate feeds were purchased from outside the farm (PC). The present study determined nutrient budgets for the two systems and used models to estimate the various forms of N loss. These studies were supported by field studies to provide additional information about areas of uncertainty identified in previous budget calculations....

Legume based plant mixtures for delivery of multiple ecosystem services: An overview of benefits Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Baddeley, J. A.; Brown, RJ; Collins, R; Crowley, Oliver; Cuttle, Steve; McCalman, Heather; Pearce, Bruce; Roderick, Stephen; Stobart, Ron; Storkey, Jonathan; Watson, Christine; Wolfe, Martin; Jones, H E.
As costs for mineral fertilizers rise, legume-based leys are recognised as a potential alternative nitrogen source for crops. Here we demonstrate that including species-rich legume-based leys in the rotation helps to maximize synergies between agricultural productivity and other ecosystem services. By using functionally diverse plant species mixtures these services can be optimised and fine-tuned to regional and farm-specific needs. Field experiments run over three years at multiple locations showed that the stability of ley performance was greater in multi-species mixtures than in legume monocultures. In addition, mixing different legume species in the ley helps to suppress both early and late weeds. Further, combining complementary phenologies of...

Organic dairy farming in Norway under the 100% organically produced feed requirement Organic Eprints
Flaten, Ola; Lien, Gudbrand.
The derogation to use a percentage of cheaper non-organic feeds in organic livestock diets for herbivores expired from January 2008. (In Norway, a maximum 15% of conventional feedstuffs per year was allowed until 24 August 2005, 5% in the interim.) This study aimed to assess changes in resource use and financial impacts for organic dairy herds of the 100% organic feeding rule (compared with 85% organic feeds) using a two-stage stochastic programming modelling framework. In this study, the objective function was to maximise expected net income. Two organic dairy farms in the lowlands of southern Norway, both having a milk quota of 100,000 litres but with varying farmland availability (37 hectares vs. 20 hectares), were examined. Furthermore, situations with...

Schmeer, Maria; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
An Experiment to examine the nitrogen fluxes after ploughing up and resowing grassland was conducted on the organic experimental station “Lindhof” in northern Germany. The trial was implemented on a uniform grassland site (since 1993) focussing on the factors grassland resowing, fertilisation with organic cattle slurry (0/230 kg ha-1) and year of renovation (2005, 2006, 2008). The factor grassland resowing further involved the following treatments: 1. undisturbed control, 2. ploughing up and resowing grassland in late summer, 3. ploughing up of grassland in autumn followed by winter wheat and grassland resowing the year after, 4. ploughing up of grassland in spring followed by spring wheat and grassland resowing the year after. Ploughing up in autumn...

Forage botanical and chemical composition on dairy farms with different grassland systems and production systems Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Thirty-two dairy farms in Middle-Norway with different grassland systems (short-term (<4 years) grassland (S) or long-term (>7 years) grassland (L)) and different production systems (organic (O) or conventional (C)) were compared in a field study in 2007. In a principal component analysis on variables including farm details, botanical composition and chemical forage composition, the farms were separated into organic and conventional farms with the exception of one farm. Amongst the organic farms most SO farms were distinguished from LO farms. Concentration of forage crude protein was positively correlated with proportion of grass. Concentration of non-fibrous carbohydrates, in vitro digestibility and net energy lactation was positively correlated...

Einfluss der Wirtschaftsdüngerform auf die Entwicklung von Dauergrünlandbeständen im Berggebiet Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
In this study slurry, manure and compost from dairy cattle were used on a newly sown meadow. The influence of these three fertilisers on botany and forage yield were tested in a randomized block design. The amount of farm fertilizers was calculated by 1.2 LU ha-1 considering quantity storage losses. No differences between used organic farm fertilisers in botanical composition were found. The highest LAI (4,7 ground level) and the highest dry matter yield of 11,045 kg DM ha-1 were measured in slurry fertilisation.

Effect of pasture botanical composition on milk composition in organic production Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Dahl, A.V.; Vae, A.H.; Thuen, E.; Garmo, T.; Krogh-Jensen, S.; Hansen-Møller, J.; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Milk samples from sixteen Norwegian Red dairy cows grazing mixed swards of either grass-red clover (GR) or mixed swards of sown and unsown species of grass, clover and other herbs (GCH) were collected during four periods. Both pastures were organically managed. Pasture botanical composition had no effect on milk fat, protein or vitamin concentration and only minor effects on fatty acid composition. Milk from GR had higher concentrations of the phytoestrogens equol, genistein and biochanin A than the milk from GCH. Concentrations of equol in milk from GR were higher than concentrations reported from experiments with red clover silage. The oxidative stability of the milk lipids was not affected by pasture type.

Nitrogen transfer from forage legumes to nine neighbouring plants in a multi-species grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Rasmussen, J.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Rasmussen, J..
Legumes play a crucial role in nitrogen supply to grass-legume mixtures for ruminant fodder. To quantify N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grasslands we established a grass-legume-herb mixture on a loamy-sandy site in Denmark. White clover (Trifolium repens L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea during one growing season. N transfer to grasses (Lolium perenne L. and xfestulolium), white clover, red clover, lucerne, birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor L.)and caraway (Carum carvi L.) was assessed. Neighbouring plants contained greater amounts of N...

Effect of age and cutting frequency on below-ground biomass in grass-clover Organic Eprints
Vinther, F.P..
Significant amounts of plant biomass and fixed N are incorporated into soil as roots, nodules and root exudates during the growth of grass-clover, which consequently is exposed to soil microbial degradation when the field is ploughed. This has major implications for our understanding of the potential contributions of legumes in the N economics and losses in grass-clover cropping systems. We have studied the effects of grass-clover pasture age and cutting frequency (simulated grazing) on the development of the above ground as well as the below ground plant biomass, with emphasis on below-harvest contribution to the total N2 fixation.

Forage production strategies for improved profitability in organic dairy production at high latitudes Organic Eprints
Flaten, O.; Bakken, A.K.; Lindås, A.; Steinshamn, H..
The objective of this paper was to examine how cutting frequency, silage fermentation patterns and clover performance in grass–clover swards influence the use of inputs and profitability in an organic dairy system. A linear programming model was developed to compare a three-cut and a two-cut system for a model farm in Central Norway, either with restricted or extensive silage fermentation at low or high red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) proportion in the sward, giving 8 different silage types in all. Input-output relations incorporated into the model were derived from a meta-analysis of organic grassland field trials in Norway as well as a silage fermentation experiment, and with feed intakes and milk yields from simulations with the ‘TINE Optifôr’ feed...

Reconciling scientific approaches for organic farming research: Part II - Effects of manure types and white clover (Trifolium repens) cultivars on the productivity of grass-clover mixtures grown on a humid sandy soil Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
This Part describes the agronomic results of the multidisciplinary grassland study. This project concerned the effects of clover varieties and spring applications of animal manure on the yield of grass-white clover mixtures on a moist sandy soil (1993-1996). To be aware of the context of the findings in a multidisciplinary approach, attention was paid to: chemical soil fertility, damage to clover by slugs and soil borne nematodes. To increase the understanding of soil fertility, earthworm dynamics were also measured. At the end of the period the botanical composition of all plots was assessed. Factors measured besides total yield and clover yield were N, P and K yield. It was found that these ‘context ’-measurements were important for the overall...
