Nidificação e forrageamento de Centris (Ptilotopus) scopipes Friese (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Zoologia
Gaglianone,Maria Cristina.
Centris (Ptilotopus) are large bees and important pollinators in the Neotropical region. Its biology and behavior is still poorly known and only a few observations have been published. In this paper, observations on the biology of C. (Ptilotopus) scopipes Friese, 1899, a species that occurs in the "cerrados" of Brazil, are presented. The study was conducted in the Estação Ecológica de Jataí, in Luiz Antônio, São Paulo, during the active period of the adults (November through April). Females collected pollen from flowers of Solanaceae and Caesalpiniaceae, by vibration, and floral oils from Malpighiaceae belonging to the genera Byrsonima, Banisteriopsis, Stigmaphyllon and Peixotoa. Floral resources are carried in the hind leg scopae to the nests, which are...

Mangrove vegetation in Amazonia: a review of studies from the coast of Pará and Maranhão States, north Brazil Acta Amazonica
Menezes,Moirah Paula Machado de; Berger,Uta; Mehlig,Ulf.
The present study is a compilation of the literature about vegetation of mangrove forest of the north coast of Brazil. It synthesizes the knowledge about this important ecosystem and lists the currently available literature. The study focuses on the coast of Pará and Maranhão states, which are covered by a continuous belt of mangroves. The mangrove flora comprises six mangrove tree species and several associated species. Mangrove tree height and stem diameter vary as a function of abiotic local stand parameters. Seasonal variation in rainfall and salinity affect the species' phenology and litter fall. Local population use products derived from mangrove plants for different purposes (e.g. fuel; medicinal; rural construction). The increase in the coastal...

Niche differentiation mechanisms among canopy frugivores and zoochoric trees in the northeastern extreme of the Amazon Acta Amazonica
TODESCHINI,Felipe; TOLEDO,José Julio de; ROSALINO,Luis Miguel; HILÁRIO,Renato Richard.
ABSTRACT Frugivores and zoocoric trees represent an important proportion of tropical rainforest biodiversity. As niche differences favor species coexistence, we aimed to evaluate morphological and temporal niche segregation mechanisms among zoochoric trees and canopy frugivores in a tropical rainforest in the northeastern extreme of the Brazilian Amazon. We tested the effects of fruit morphology, tree size, frugivore body size and time of day on fruit consumption. We recorded the frugivore species that fed on 72 trees (44 species, 22 genera) and whether these frugivores swallowed the seeds. We monitored trees only once from 07:00 to 17:00 h between January and September 2017. We observed fruit consumption in 20 of the 72 trees. Seventy-three frugivore...

The influence of El Niño and edge effects on the reproductive phenology and floral visitors of Eschweilera tetrapetala Mori (Lecythidaceae), an endemic species of the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Menezes,Isiara Silva; Couto-Santos,Ana Paula Lima do; Funch,Ligia Silveira.
ABSTRACT We compared the reproductive phenology and floral visitors of Eschweilera tetrapetala growing along the edge and in the interior of a submontane forest in the Chapada Diamantina mountains, Bahia State, Brazil. We sought to determine if there were inter-annual differences in intensity and seasonality associated with environmental conditions, and if there were differences in floral visitors between the two environmental contexts. Phenological observations were performed for three years, and included the occurrence of an El Niño event. We applied circular statistics to detect seasonal trends, performed cross correlations between phenophases and climate, Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for inter-annual variation, and the...

Phenological synchrony and seasonality of understory Rubiaceae in the Atlantic Forest, Bahia, Brazil Acta Botanica
Liuth,Heitor Scarpati; Talora,Daniela Custódio; Amorim,André Márcio.
In tropical forests with low seasonality, climatic variables generally exert a weak influence on the phenology of species. The seasonality of phenophases in closely related taxa can be controlled by phylogenetic constraints in such environments. In this study, our aim was to describe the phenology of Rubiaceae in the understory of the Atlantic Forest in the southern part of Bahia, Brazil, as well as to evaluate the seasonality and phenological synchrony of this family. For two years, we observed 90 individuals belonging to 13 species, in an area of 0.2 ha. Leaf flushing and leaf fall did not demonstrate any seasonality, were continuous for most species and correlated with few of the climatic variables. Flowering was seasonal and correlated positively with...

Xylem growth rings and leaf phenological patterns in tree species of a subtropical seasonal forest Acta Botanica
Bauer,Danielle; Schmitt,Jairo L.; Oliveira,Juliano M..
ABSTRACT Growth rings have been reported for several tropical species under seasonal precipitation regimes and have often been related to leaf phenology. We investigated growth ring distinctiveness, wood markers, and leaf shedding and flushing patterns of 16 tree species from a subtropical seasonal deciduous forest under abundant and well-distributed rainfall regime in southern Brazil. Distinct growth rings were found in 13 species, 10 of which presented clear anatomical boundaries. Seven species were deciduous, five semideciduous and four perennial. Leaf shedding peaked during winter and spring months for the deciduous species, while it peaked during spring and summer months for the perennial and semideciduous species. Leaf flushing peaked in spring and...

Fructan dynamics in the underground organs of Chresta exsucca (Asteraceae), a dry season flowering species Acta Botanica
Santos,Camila Silva dos; Abraão,Cinara Ferreira; Moraes,Moemy Gomes de.
ABSTRACT Climatic seasonality has an influence on the phenology of native Cerrado plants. Herbs and subshrubs tend to flower in the rainy season, although some species of these habits flower in the dry season. Reserve carbohydrates, stored in the underground organs, are used to support phases of high energy-demand, but also may protect plants from damage during periods of environmental limitation. In this study we evaluated variation in fructan levels in the underground organs of field-grown plants of Chresta exsucca among different phenological phases. Chresta exsucca flowers in the dry season and possesses a diffuse underground system, which stores inulin-type fructans. Resprouting was continual during the sampling period. Oligosaccharide content was...

Tannins in Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae): effects of seasonality, water availability and plant sex Acta Botanica
Espírito-Santo,Mário M; Fernandes,G. Wilson; Allain,Luciana R; Reis,Ticiana R. F.
Several ecological, genetic, and environmental factors are known to influence tannin concentration in plant tissues. In this study, the effects of seasonality, water availability, and sex of the plant on tannin concentration in the dioecious shrub Baccharis dracunculifolia were assessed. The effects of water availability on plant shoot growth and its relationship to tannin concentration were also experimentally evaluated. Tannins occurred in B. dracunculifolia from November to May, peaking during the summer (December to March). However, no relationship between tannin concentration, rainfall and temperature was found. No difference in tannin concentration and shoot growth was found between plants in the irrigated and control treatments, this suggesting that...

Phenological relationships between two insect galls and their host plants: Aspidosperma australe and A. spruceanum (Apocynaceae) Acta Botanica
Campos,Priscila Tolentino; Costa,Maria Cecília Dias; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos; Moreira,Ana Sílvia Franco Pinheiro; Oliveira,Denis Coelho de; Lemos-Filho,José Pires de.
Although gall diversity in the Neotropical region is immense, comparative studies on the phenology of host plants and their galls are scarce. Gall systems generally require high levels of phenological synchrony between the associated organisms. The relationships between the phenology of two leaf galls induced by an unidentified Cecidomyiidae in Aspidosperma spruceanum Benth. ex Müell. Arg. and by Pseudophacopteron sp. in A. australe Müell. Arg. were investigated. The investigation was performed on ten individuals per species in 15-day intervals taking into consideration the percentage of galled leaves. In a one-year study, three distinct phenophases for the leaf galls and four phenophases for host plants were observed. The maximum percentage of leaf galls...

Post-fire flowering and fruiting in Vellozia sincorana, a caulescent rosette plant endemic to Northeast Brazil Acta Botanica
Conceição,Abel Augusto; Orr,Barron J..
Vellozia sincorana L.B. Sm. & Ayensu, an endemic of campos rupestres, is an endangered species collected by local people to start cooking fires due to the flammability of its resinous stems. A massive flowering of V. sincorana following a wildfire in October 1999 raised some questions: Does fire affect flowering and fruiting of V. sincorana? Is the height of individuals correlated with flowering and fruit production? A wildfire event on 8 November 2008 provided an opportunity to explore these questions. Two populations of V. sincorana in two campos rupestres sites (12º31'S - 41º29'W; 12º36'S - 41º28'W) on ridgetops in the Chapada Diamantina National Park (Brazil) were monitored, one burned in the November 2008 fire and the other unburned since the...

Phenology of the multi-use tree species Carapa guianensis in a floodplain forest of the Amazon Estuary Acta Botanica
Dantas,Adelson R.; Lira-Guedes,Ana C.; Mustin,Karen; Aparício,Wegliane C. S.; Guedes,Marcelino C..
ABSTRACT Carapa guianensis is a multi-use tree species that is used for the production of timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) that are used and sold by rural Amazonian populations. Here we aimed to evaluate the phenophases of C. guianensis in várzea forest and relate them to climatic seasonality. Phenophases of flowering (flower buds and open flowers), fruiting (unripe and ripe fruits), and leaf flush and leaf fall were recorded for 30 individual trees during a 25 month period. Relationships between rainfall and the proportion of trees in each phenophase were tested using Generalised Linear Models with quasi-binomial errors. Flowering was found to peak in the driest months of the year (September to December), while fruiting peaked during the...

Harvest growth stages in soybean cultivars intended for silage Animal Sciences
Oliveira, Raquel Dias; Silva, Carla Michelle; Mielezrski, Fábio; Lima, José Sidnei Bezerra; Edvan, Ricardo Loiola.
This study aimed to characterize the harvest phenological stages of soybean cultivars intended for silage. Cultivars were evaluated for dry weight of the composite sample, branches, leaves and pods; wet mass of branches, leaves, pods and ground natural matter. This experiment was a 3 x 2 factorial randomized block design, with four replications each, where the first factor corresponds to the harvest stage: R4, R5 and R6; and the second factor refers to two soybean maturity groups (8.0 and 8.1). A significant interaction was detected only for ground natural matter. Higher values of most traits evaluated were observed for the R6 harvest phenological stage. The cultivar with maturity group 8.0 showed higher values for ground natural matter.

Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.) is a forager with high nutritional values and excellent palatability, and its phenology is almost unknown. Aiming at improving the knowledge and understanding siratro pollinators and floral biology, the total sugar contents on its flowers nectar and the identification of these sugars were determined by, respectively, spectrophotometry and chromatography. The total sugar concentration varied from a maximum of 1.36 and 3.23 mg/flower and a minimum of 0.19 and 0.42 mg/flower. Results showed that the total sugar concentration is high at 8:30 a.m., when the flowers open, and varies slightly during the time the flowers keep open. The variations can be related to the number of insects that visit the flowers, especially...

Growth rhythm of Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae) in the Northern Pantanal Biological Sciences
Machado, Nadja Gomes; Sanches, Luciana; Aquino, Aryadne Márcia; Silva, Ludymilla Barboza da; Novais, Jonathan Willian Zangeski; Biudes, Marcelo Sacardi.
The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, characterized by high biodiversity, but large areas have been invaded by Vochysia divergens, a flood-adapted pioneer and native tree of the riparian forest and Brazilian Savanna. Seasonality in rainfall causes annual rhythms in the tree’s physiology, in which climatic stress factors induce a cambial dormancy in trees and, in consequence, growth zones in the trunk. Current analysis evaluates the seasonal variation of the diameter increase of V. divergens specimens in a seasonal floodable forest of the Northern Brazilian Pantanal. Field sampling was conducted between January and December 2012. Air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation were measured at a micrometeorological station, water level was...
