The host specificity and population dynamics of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> in a number of paratenic hosts were investigated. Various freshwater fish species were sampled monthly (March 1990 to March 1991) from the Kolenhaven (Albertcanal, Genk, Belgium) and examined for L3-larvae of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i>. Sixteen species were found to be infected: all the physoclist species examined (<i>Gymnocephalus cernua, Lepomis gibbosus, Ictalurus nebulosus, Stizostedion lucioperca, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Oreochromis niloticus</i> and <i>Perca fluviatilis</i>) and those physostome species of which a sufficient number could be examined to detect the infection (<i>Gobio gobio, Leuciscus... |

Abstract: The objective of this work were to evaluate the population dynamics of the rice stem bug (Tibraca limbativentris) around and in flood irrigated rice cultivation area, to quantify the insect population flow between crops and host plants, and to determine the effect of the species, the diameter of the plant, and the distance of the host plant from the border on the rice stem bug population. The work was conducted in the 2012/2013 harvest and in the off-season, with sampling of rice, Andropogom bicornis, and Andropogon lateralis plants in six cultivated areas, in order to count the number of insects. The population density of the rice stem bug in irrigated rice and alternative host plants presents spatial and temporal dependence. In the cultivated... |

The objective of this work was to predict the occurrence of alates of Brevicoryne brassicae, Lipaphis erysimi, and Myzus persicae (Hemiptera, Aphididae) in Brassicaceae. The alate aphids were collected in yellow water traps from July 1997 to August 2005. Aphid population peaks were predicted using a degree‑day model. The meteorological factors, temperature, air relative humidity, rainfall, and sunshine hours, were used to provide precision indexes to evaluate the best predictor for the date of the first capture of alate aphids by the traps. The degree‑day model indicated that the peak population of the evaluated aphid species can be predicted using one of the following biofix dates: January 1st, June 1st, and the date of the first capture of the alate... |

Kale Brassica oleracea var. acephala is attacked by whitefly Bemisia tabaci, aphid Brevicoryne brassicae and Thrips tabaci. One of the main reasons for extensive insecticide application is the lack of information about factors that control insect population. The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationships between predators and parasitoids, organic compound leaves, levels of leaf nitrogen and potassium, total rainfall, relative humidity, sunlight and median temperature on the abundance of whitefly, aphid, and thrips in kale genotype "Talo Roxo". The beating tray method, direct counting and magnifying lens were used to estimate the number of these pests, predators and parasitoids. Median temperature, sunlight and relative humidity... |

The detectability of invasive organisms influences the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a framework for defining and measuring detectability, taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. In this paper, search theory concepts are incorporated into a population model, and the costs of search and control are calculated as functions of the amount of search effort (the decision variable). Simulations are performed on a set of weed scenarios in a natural environment, involving different combinations of plant longevity, seed longevity and plant fecundity. Results provide preliminary estimates of the cost and duration of eradication programs to assist in prioritising weeds for control. The... |

and glades. This species blooms throughout the year, attracting arthropods of various guilds, including herbivores, pollinators and predators. In this study, done over a two year period, we described the phenology of T. adenantha and assessed the seasonal variation in arthropod numbers of different guilds. We also determined the periods of lowest and highest seed set. T. adenantha population showed a peak in flowering in March-April (rainy season) with greater production of achenes in December-April. April and October had respectively highest and lowest number of fertilized, undamaged ovules, and this pattern is possibly related with population dynamics of pollinators and herbivores. In August, which was the period of greatest damage to the stigma (by... |

Abstract This study examined temporal variation in the abundance of immature stages of Elbella luteizona (Hesperiidae) and describes the morphology and behavior of the larvae on their host plants, Byrsonima coccolobifolia and Myrsine guianensis. Five hundred sixty-eight 10 m diameter plots were searched for caterpillars in the Brazilian Cerrado over a period of one year. We inspected 5968 host plants, and found 31 eggs and 262 larvae on 244 plants. Similar numbers of immatures were found in both species of host plants. The abundance of immature stages varied monthly and was significantly higher in the dry season on both host plants, which may be due to the low density of natural enemies during that time. E. luteizona is univoltine, and larvae present... |

The Pantanal is a South American biome characterized by extensive plains and stark environmental seasonality. Several habitats are subject to annual flooding, forcing small mammal species to aggregate in dry forest patches, which most likely influences their population dynamics and life history strategies. In order to investigate the seasonal influence on the life history traits of these small mammals, we conducted a 2-year mark-recapture study in the southeastern region of the Brazilian Pantanal (Nhecolândia) and analyzed the population dynamics of the most abundant small mammal species with the jackknife estimator. A trapping effort of 21,560 trap-nights resulted in 615 individuals in 1,171 captures (success = 5.43%). Three species of rodents - Oecomys... |

Despite the great diversity of Brazilian Atlantic forest small mammals, natural history of most species is unknown due to their cryptic and nocturnal habits, but also due to the inadequacy of methods to capture some species, especially those of arboreal habits. A new technique, based on the use of artificial nests (AN) to record arboreal marsupials, is presented. Artificial nests were combined with traditional live traps to study the population ecology of four didelphid marsupial species. After 62 months of monitoring, 119 individuals were recorded 243 times (total success = 5.2%). Only 26 individuals (22%) were recorded by both AN and live trap methods, and two of the four species were never captured by live traps, only by AN. Live traps alone would have... |

The dynamics of Enochrus variegatus (Steinheil) and Enochrus vulgaris (Steinheil) in temporary pools and permanent ponds were studied in an urban park of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Samples were collected from both types of habitats weekly throughout one year, and variables like water surface and vegetation cover were recorded. In permanent ponds, adults of both species were found throughout the study period, while in temporary pools their presence depended on the availability of water. Differences in their reproductive seasons and breeding sites were observed. Enochrus vulgaris was characterized by an opportunistic strategy, and its larvae were detected in both types of habitats, associated mainly with spring and summer temperatures. Conversely, E.... |
