Demographic structure of a threatened palm (Euterpe edulis Mart.) in a fragmented landscape of Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Melito,Melina Oliveira; Faria,José Cláudio; Amorim,André Márcio; Cazetta,Eliana.
At the northern limits of the range of the palm species Euterpe edulis there is an endemic ecotype, known as the "Bahia" ecotype, which is distinguished by its reddish crownshaft and low seed production. Unfortunately, little is known about its demographic characteristics. Therefore, we contrasted the density of E. edulis populations in the Una region, in the southern part of the Bahia state, Brazil, with that of other populations of the species in southern and southeastern Brazil. In addition, within the Una region, we compared a long-protected forest fragment (F1) with three recently protected fragments (F2, F3, and F4), in terms of demographic parameters and plant size, in order to determine what influence, if any, time since protection has on E. edulis...

Seed germination ecophysiology of the wild pineapple, Ananas ananassoides (Baker) L.B.Sm. (Bromeliaceae) Acta Botanica
Silveira,Fernando Augusto Oliveira; Santos,Jean Carlos; Fernandes,Geraldo Wilson.
In this study we investigated the effects of light, temperature, and storage on seed germination of the wild pineapple Ananasananassoides, an understorey species found in cerrado woodlands. Seeds were germinated at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ºC and a 12-hr photoperiod and continuous darkness for 30-d. Seeds were photoblastic and the optimum temperatures for germination were 25 and 30 ºC. Seeds stored for 12-mo at room temperature and at 4 ºC were set to germinate at optimum conditions. Germinability of stored seeds did not differ from that of recently collected seeds, regardless of storage temperature, indicating their physiological potential for seed bank formation. Our results suggest that as in tropical rainforests, light may be an important...

Temporal changes in species composition, diversity, and woody vegetation structure of savannas in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone Acta Botanica
Maracahipes-Santos,Leonardo; Santos,Josias Oliveira dos; Reis,Simone Matias; Lenza,Eddie.
ABSTRACT Vegetation in the transition between tropical forest and savanna is hyperdynamic and there is evidence that in the absence of fire, forest advances over savanna. Between 2008 and 2013 we evaluated changes in species composition and diversity and in the structure of the woody vegetation of savanna physiognomies in the transition between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes that were fire free for 11 years. The physiognomies form a gradient from savanna woodland (Typical Cerrado - TC), to low woodland (Dense Cerrado - DC), to woodland (locally called Cerradão - CO). We hypothesise that: 1) the more open physiognomies (TC and DC) are more dynamic compared to the closed physiognomy (CO); and 2) in the absence of fire vegetation tends to become more forested....

Woody vegetation dynamics in a floodplain campo de murundus in central Brazil Acta Botanica
Pinto,José Roberto Rodrigues; Mews,Henrique Augusto; Jancoski,Halina Soares; Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Bomfim,Bárbara de Oliveira.
Campos de murundus (grasslands dotted with knolls that are covered with savanna-like woody vegetation) are a common landscape in central Brazil. In this study, we assessed for the first time the dynamics of the vegetation in a floodplain campo de murundus, describing changes in composition and structure of the woody vegetation. In 2005, we established 16 permanent 25 × 25 m plots, where we identified and mapped individuals with a trunk diameter at the base ≥ 2.86 cm, as well as measuring the height of those individuals. In 2008 (after two fire events), we resampled the plots. In 2005, we had registered 4.54 m² ha-1 of basal area, 430 individuals, 42 species, 36 genera and 24 families. In 2008, we found an increase in basal area (to 4.65 m² ha-1) and a...

Spatial patterns of two co-occurring savanna and forest tree species in a dense fire-protected savanna fragment Acta Botanica
Costa,Rafael Carvalho da; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
ABSTRACT Savanna-forest transition under fire-exclusion could be explained by differential competitive performance of savanna and forest species under shading/fire-exclusion. Aiming to understand strategies related to either habitat affinity, we investigated spatial patterns of a savanna and a forest species in a fire-protected savanna. We predicted that: savanna species would have lower abundance than the forest species due to a restriction in the number of open microsites; segregation of size classes and a trend from clumping to regularity with size for forest species due to absence of microsite limitation and intra-specifc competition; and spatial association and increasing clustering with size for savanna species due to microsite limitation. To test...

Structural and compositional shifts in Cerrado fragments in up to 11 years monitoring Biological Sciences
Cordeiro, Natielle Gomes; Pereira, Kelly Marianne Guimarães; Terra, Marcela de Castro Nunes Santos; Mello, José Márcio de.
The Cerrado has a wide diversity of fauna and flora, and the knowledge of its horizontal structure, in different time intervals allows the prediction of its structural and floristic characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in structure and composition of tree community in three fragments of Cerrado with low anthropization, in an interval of 11 years at Minas Gerais state. Rectangular plots of fixed size were sampled, measuring stem diameter and height of all living arboreal individuals with diameter at 1.30 meters above ground (DBH) ≥ 5 cm. The tree vegetation dynamics study of the areas was performed, as well as the floristic analysis and the diametric structure. Considering all fragments and years of measurement, the recruitment...

Ferns influence on the woody species seedling bank in semi-deciduous forest, Southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Carvalho, Eloisa de Souza; Pimenta, José Antonio; Bianchini, Edmilson.
Different species of plants can act as environmental filters affecting the composition, structure and spatial distribution of seeds and seedlings of forest species. This study aimed to examine whether the presence of the fern stratum acts as a biotic environmental filter on the woody species seedling bank in a semi-deciduous forest remnant (Atlantic biome), Southern Brazil. Two experiments were developed in areas with ferns (F) and ferns-free (NF): a) richness and abundance of woody seedling bank were determined in 10 plots (25 m2) in each area; b) seedlings abundance of Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg., Aspidosperma polyneuron Müll. Arg., Euterpe edulis Mart., Guarea kunthiana A. Juss. and Inga marginata Kunth were monitored for a year in three...

Reproductive phenology of the American Bullfrog in subtropical Brazil: photoperiod as a main determinant of seasonal activity Anais da ABC (AABC)
MEDEIROS,CAMILA I.; BOTH,CAMILA; KAEFER,IGOR L.; CECHIN,SONIA Z..
ABSTRACT The North American bullfrog Lithobates catesbeianus continues to invade ecosystems worldwide, potentially causing population declines and even extinctions. Within its native distribution, bullfrogs show prolonged reproductive seasons and high fertility. However, data on breeding biology of bullfrogs ex-situ in invaded localities mainly comes from anecdotal reports. Understanding how invasive species are adjusting their life histories to new colonized environments is important for conservation purposes. Here we describe temporal and spatial abundance, calling activity, spawning and tadpole distribution of bullfrogs in southern Brazil. Eighteen samplings occurred during one year. The abundance of individuals was positively related to longer...

Population and reproductive traits of a freshwater amphipod (Crustacea, Peracarida, Hyalellidae) from northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Castiglioni,Daniela da Silva; Limberger,Marcio; Castro,Vanessa da Silva; Ubessi,Francieli.
Abstract The study of population and reproductive traits provides information about the ecological structure of natural populations. This study aimed to characterize dynamics and reproductive traits of Hyalella palmeirensis from a natural pond from southern Brazil. The amphipods were sampled monthly (August 2012 to July 2013) by a person with the aid of a hand net for 20 minutes. Ovigerous females and pre-copulatory pairs were individualized in the field. A total of 12,325 individuals were sampled, being 1,421 males, 6,983 females (including 215 ovigerous females) and 3,921 juveniles. Paired and unpaired males were significantly greater in size than females. There was a positive correlation between body size (CL) of paired males and females. Males and...

Spatial heterogeneity and its influence on Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) BABT
Resende,Júlio Carlos França; Klink,Carlos Augusto; Schiavini,Ivan.
Population dynamics and structure of young individuals of the tree Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) were studied in the gallery forest of the Panga Ecological Station, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. Three distinct habitats were recognized in this forest, Dike, Middle and Edge zone. Four annual surveys of plant height, diameter at plant base and density were made between 1993 and 1996. The species showed an aggregated distribution in all three habitats. Population structure in all four surveys presented the typical reversed "J" form, characteristic of populations in local regeneration. For the whole population, mortality rates during the four years were constant and low (average of 4.8 % per year), while recruitment declined during the same period...

Epibenthic colonization on an artificial reef in a stressed environment off the north coast of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil BABT
Krohling,Werther; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
The influence of sedimentation and turbidity caused by the pluviometric precipitation and by the Paraiba do Sul River during the summer was investigated on an artificial reef along the north coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four recruitment and four cumulative plates were removed monthly (January 2002 to February 2003) from the external surface of the concrete reef modules. Empty space was not a limiting factor the recruitment. Turnover rate and structural difference index were higher in the first months and reflected low change in the species dominance during almost the entire study period. The high correlation between the precipitation and the empty space suggested that rain influence the recruitment and the succession. The recruitment was possible...

The role of pre-recruitment processes in the maintenance of a barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patch on an intertidal pebble shore in Japan BJB
APOLINÁRIO,M..
To understand the role of pre-recruitment processes (supply of larvae and recruitment) in the maintenance of an intertidal barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patch, the availability of cyprid larvae and the recruitment on natural pebble substrata was monitored on the Magarisaki pebble shore (Amakusa, Kyushu, Japan) during 1995 and 1996. Also, a hypothesis that predation and/or bulldozing by mobile intertidal mollusks during the post-recruitment period could be an important factor in mortality of these barnacles was tested. The collapse of the adult population and the consequent disappearance of the patch were observed by the middle of 1995. The larval availability was low (<FONT FACE="Symbol">@</FONT> 6 cyprid larvae/100 l), as was the...
