OVERLEVELSE AF INDIKATORORGANISMER OG SMITSTOFFER I KOMPOSTTOILETTER OG VED SIMULERET CENTRALISERET EFTERKOMPOSTERING AF AFFØRING FRA MENNESKER Organic Eprints
Møller, J.; Backlund, A.; Jørgensen, L.T.; Forslund, A.; Dalsgaard, A..

While plant nutrient deficiencies are a major constraint to increasing crop yields in many rural parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, excess nutrients in organic wastes and wastewater cause environmental and hygienic problems in urban areas. We report on an ongoing research aimed at implementing principles of ecological sanitation on a university campus near Accra, Ghana. Alternative sanitation including dry urinals and separating toilets was installed in buildings. Pure urine, urine-water mix, greywater from baths and kitchens and faeces are treated and stored separately. Except for faeces, all materials are used to fertilise annual (urine) and perennial (urine-water, greywater) crops. Urine application significantly boosted maize and sorghum growth. Pathogens...

Sustainability, overall and process efficiency of energy crops Organic Eprints
Schäfer, Winfried.
A method to calculate efficiency of energy crop production including sun energy, direct and indirect energy for cultivation, processing, and conversion into fuel is demonstrated using rape and derived fuels as an example. Every production and conversion step is a process and calculated separately. The overall efficiency includes energy input and output of all processes. The process efficiency of rape cultivation reaches in Finland up to 1100 %. However, the overall energy efficiency of rape methyl ester (RME) is 1 to 2 ‰ only. The production of biogas from manure of dairy fed by rape meal results in a process energy efficiency of 33 to 41 %, but the overall energy efficiency of RME and biogas together is only 1.2 to 2.5 ‰. In contrast, thermal or...

Tracing Food Education for Sustainable Development in iPOPY countries. Recommendations for learning about sustainability and organic food within educational contexts. Organic Eprints
Mikkola, Minna; Roos, Gun.
Food Education for Sustainable Development (FESD) is evolving into a topical entity included in education in European countries due to the growing focus on environmental and health problems, which cause a ‘sustainability deficit’ within the food system. This paper presents qualitative and exploratory research results from iPOPY project, carried out in Denmark, Finland, Italy and Norway regarding FESD and organic food in public food service for young people. The national core curricula in the studied countries seem to allow FESD although it is addressed in school contexts in varying ways through different school subjects; to some extent, the implementation depends on teachers’ other school activities and school food culture. There are teachers who...

Enhancing Sustainability by Landscape-Design and Conversion to Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Kainz, Maximilian.
A hilly site with variable soils and facing all the problems of modern agriculture was re-designed and converted to organic agriculture in 1992. After 10 years of measurements and observations it was determined that soil compaction, runoff, and erosion were reduced, quality of groundwater and ponds was gradually enhanced, diversity of wildlife was enriched, and the economic situation of the farmer was improved. Besides landscape design, conversion to organic agriculture is regarded as a key instrument towards sustainable land use in this region.

Legumes for mitigation of climate change and feedstock in a bio-based economy - a review Organic Eprints
Jensen, Erik S.; Peoples, Mark B.; Boddey, Robert M.; Gresshoff, Peter M.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Alves, Bruno J.R.; Morrison, Malcolm J..
Legumes are unique plants which contribute with several functions and services of great value for agriculture and society. Including legume food, forage and tree crops in farming systems is one approach to mitigate climate change. We have shown that the ability of the legumes to fix there own N via the symbiosis with rhizobia will reduce CO2 and N2O emissions compared to crops fertilized with industrial N. There is, however, a requirement to better understand the potential residual effects of legumes on N2O emissions. We have similarly shown that legumes have a key role in soilC sequestration and that the inclusion of legumes as sole crops, cover crops or intercrops usually enhances the rate of soil C accumulation even within relative short time periods....

Sustainable Intensification of Tropical Agro-Ecosystems: Need and Potentials Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Bhullar, Gurbir S..
Rapid population growth, increasingly complex economies and novel industrial uses of agricultural products call for further intensification of agriculture, particularly in the tropics. How to achieve sustainable intensification of food production systems in tropical regions that are challenged by ongoing climate change, loss of natural resources and biodiversity is a matter of debate. Here we highlight the major knowledge gaps in agricultural research and policy that must be addressed to develop adequate governance and regulatory frameworks for sustainable agricultural intensification. They include quantification of the (i) value of (public/private) goods generated by ecosystem services, (ii) costs to conserve the natural resources and biodiversity that...

LATRINE COMPOSTING – A HYGIENIC EVALUATION Organic Eprints
Holmqvist, A.; Møller, J.; Dalsgaard, A..
Thermophilic composting of faecal matter from urine diverting toilets can effectively reduce the numbers of faecal bacterial indicators and pathogen. Already at 50C, the numbers of pathogens, including the Salmonella phage, and indicator organisms analysed were effectively reduced within a few days of exposure. Although the numbers of enterococci were reduced, they were continuous isolated as purple colonies on Slanetz and Bartleys agar after prolonged exposure at all temperature levels studied. This indicates that certain micro-organisms present in the composted faecal material, Enterococcus spp. or micro-organisms resembling enterococci on the agar medium, can survive and multiply even at 60C. These findings question the use of enterococci as faecal...

Socioeconomic determinants of organic cotton adoption in Benin, West Africa Organic Eprints
Sodjinou, Epiphane; Glin, Laurent C.; Nicolay, Gian L.; Tovignan, Silvère; Hinvi, Jonas.
Organic cotton relies on ecological processes and the use of natural resources to sustain the production system, unlike conventional cotton, mainly characterized by massive utilization of synthesis chemicals. In West Africa, where rural livelihoods are particularly vulnerable, organic cotton is expected to contribute not only to poverty reduction but also to strengthen households’ resilience. The objective of this study was to assess institutional and socioeconomic factors determining farmers’ decisions to adopt organic cotton. For this purpose, we applied a probit model on empirical data collected from producers of the Centre and the Northern parts of Benin. Overall, we found that organic cotton adoption is mainly determined by farmers’ socioeconomic...

Towards a paradigm for the convergence of production, marketing and environmental protection in the field of the organic olive oil production chain- Conclusions from the BIOLMED project Organic Eprints
Ehaliotis, C; Martinis, A; Minotou, Ch.
The majority of innovations pioneered within/for the organic olive oil production (OOOP) chain may, and are, increasingly becoming, adopted by the conventional olive oil production chain, especially regarding cultivation, inputs related to plant/ecosystem protection and trade/promotion of specialized high quality products. Therefore the OOOP-chain may become a pioneering paradigm, for the implementation and convergence of agricultural production, marketing, sustainable rural development and environmental/biodiversity protection EU policies in the Mediterranean. Moreover, it appears that OOOP systems are increasingly becoming model systems for developing, applying and evaluating innovations that may have far more general applicability for Mediterranean...

Veileder for biogassanlegg - mulighetsstudie, planlegging og drift Organic Eprints
Morken, John; Briseid, Tormod; Hovland, Jon; Lyng, Kari-Anne; Kvande, Ingvar.

Fruit dragée formulated with reused solution from pineapple osmotic dehydration PAB
Germer,Sílvia Pimentel Marconi; Luz,Gisele Marcondes; Silva,Lidiane Bataglia da; Silva,Marta Gomes da; Morgano,Marcelo Antonio; Silveira,Neliane Ferraz de Arruda.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the reuse of sucrose syrup in pineapple (Ananas comosus) osmotic dehydration and the application of the spent solution in fruit dragée formulation. Osmotic dehydration trials were performed in five cycles (65° Brix/45°C/3 hours), directly reusing the osmotic solution, with only one intermediate reconditioning step. Variations in osmotic solution properties and in dehydration parameters were observed, as well as a low microbial load in the system. The spent solution was rich in vitamin C (30 mg 100 g-1). Pineapple dragée covered with red fruits and acai powders were obtained with the reconditioned spent solution used as an adhesion solution. The dragée presented high levels of vitamin C (176 mg 100 g-1),...

The Determinants of the Municipality's Decision to Implement Recycling in Japan: Socio-Economic and Technological Factors AgEcon
Usui, Takehiro; Chikasada, Mitsuko.
The Japanese government has encouraged reduction, reuse, and recycling of waste with the slogan "3R" under the Basic Law for Establishing a Recycling-based Society. However, the law is non-binding in nature; thus, the collection of each type of recyclable containers and packaging is done at the discretion of the municipalities. Some municipalities do not provide collection services for these recyclables. Why do some municipalities recycle while others do not? Few studies have investigated the determinants of the municipality's decision to collect recyclables. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting a municipality's decision to implement the collection of already sorted recyclable containers and packaging in Japan. We use a panel data...

Extended Product Responsibility: An Economic Assessment of Alternative Policies AgEcon
Palmer, Karen L.; Walls, Margaret.
Extended Product Responsibility embodies the notion that agents along a product chain should share responsibility for the life-cycle environmental impacts of the product, including those associated with ultimate disposal. Extended Producer Responsibility is a narrower concept which places responsibility on producers and focuses primarily on post-consumer waste disposal. Manufacturer "take-back" requirements are the policy lever most often associated with Extended Producer Responsibility. In this paper, we discuss alternative incentive-based policies that are consistent with the objectives of Extended Product and Producer Responsibility. We argue that an upstream combined product tax and recycling subsidy (UCTS) is generally more cost-effective and imposes...
