Anaerobic mono-digestion of lucerne, grass and forbs - Influence of species and cutting frequency Organic Eprints
Wahid, R; Feng, L; Cong, WF; Ward, A; Møller, HB; Eriksen, J.
In the present study, biogas potentials of multispecies swards including grass, lucerne, caraway, ribwort plantain and chicory from two- and four-cut regimes (Mix-2 and Mix-4) for mono-digestion applying batch and continuous modes under lab-scale conditions were investigated. The gas yields in terms of volatile solids (VS)loaded from Mix-2 and Mix-4 were compared with pure stand lucerne from the four cuts regime (Lu-4). The batch test results indicate that methane yield on a VS basis was highest from Mix-4 (295 L kg−1), followed by Mix-2 (281 L kg−1) and Lu-4 (255 L kg−1). The results were confirmed with continuous experiments, during which the reactor digesting Mix-4 was stable throughout the experiment with low ammonia and volatile fatty acid...

Characterization of microsatellite primers for Bembidion lampros through 454-sequencing of the genome Organic Eprints
Marchi, C.; Andersen, L.W.; Panitz, F; Holm, L.-E.; Loeschcke, V..
454-sequencing of the genome was used to isolate and characterize nuclear 22 microsatellite sequences from the ground beetle Bembidion lampros (Carabidae). A 23 total of 4502 contigs containing di- to penta-nucleotide microsatellite repeats were 24 found (4211 perfect and 289 non-perfect repeats). Primers were developed and tested 25 for 34 microsatellite sequences. Of these 15 were tested on 1140 individual samples 26 amplifying on average 89% of samples and they did not deviate significantly from 27 Hardy-Weinberg and linkage equilibrium. These microsatellite sequences will be useful 28 in studying the effect of agricultural management techniques and various environmental 29 factors on a beneficial agricultural species.

Dioxins in organic eggs: a review Organic Eprints
Marion, de Vries; Rene, Kwakkel; Aize, Kijlstra.
Eggs contribute for about 4% to the daily dioxin intake of humans. Research among layer farms in the Netherlands and other EU countries has shown that organic eggs contain more dioxin than conventional ones and that a significant number of organic farms produce eggs with a dioxin content that exceeds the EU standard. The hens’ intake of dioxins from various sources leads to an increase in the dioxin content of organic eggs. These sources include plants, feed, soil, worms and insects, and compared with hens on conventional and free-range farms, organic hens make more use of these sources due to better access to the outdoor run. Plants appear to be relatively unimportant as a source of dioxins. Also commercial organic feed generally has very low dioxin...

Selective vertical seed transport by earthworms: implications for the diversity of grassland ecosystems Organic Eprints
Zaller, Johann G.; Saxler, N..
Earthworms are suggested to play an important role for the plant diversity of grassland ecosystems. Here we tested, whether (i) Lumbricus terrestris L. selectively feeds on seeds of grassland species, (ii) feeding patterns match with seed species present in surface casts in a permanent grassland and (iii) grassland plant seeds in different soil depths are relocated by the activity of earthworms. Food choice experiments with 10 plant species (3 grass spp., 4 non-leguminous herb spp., 3 leguminous spp.) showed that earthworms significantly selected between the offered seeds and generally favoured herbaceous species over grass species. Seed species in grassland surface casts did not correlate with seed species preferred by earthworms in the feeding...

Carbon mineralization and microbial activity in agricultural topsoil and subsoil as regulated by root nitrogen and recalcitrant carbon concentrations Organic Eprints
Liang, Zhi; Elsgaard, Lars; Nicolaisen, Mette; Lyhne-Kjæbye, Annemette; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Aims Mechanisms of subsoil carbon sequestration from deep-rooted plants are elusive, but may contribute to climate change mitigation. This study addressed the role of root chemistry on carbon mineralization and microbiology in a temperate agricultural subsoil (60 and 300 cm depth)compared to topsoil (20 cm depth). Methods Roots from different plant species were chemically characterized and root-induced CO2 production was measured in controlled soil incubations (20 weeks). Total carbon losses, β-glucosidase activity, carbon substrate utilization, and bacterial gene copy numbers were determined. After 20 weeks, resultant carbon mineralization responses to mineral nitrogen (N) were tested. Results Root-induced carbon losses were significantly lower in...

Amara ovata und A. similata (Coleoptera, Carabidae), zwei phytophage Laufkäferarten in Rapsfeldern Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Wyss, Eric.

Arbuscular mycorrhizae in a long-term field trial comparing low-input (organic, biological) and high-input (conventional) farming systems in a crop rotation Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Edenhofer, Stephan; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Niggli, Urs.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) root colonization was studied in a long-term field trial in which four farming systems currently in use in Switzerland were continuously applied to a randomized set of plots at a single field site from 1978 till 1993. There were two low-input farming systems (organic and bio-dynamic) and two high-input (conventional) farming systems (according to Swiss guidelines of integrated plant production with and without farmyard manure). The systems had an identical 7-year crop rotation and tillage scheme and differed essentially only in the amount and type of fertilizer supplied and in plant protection management. The percentage of root colonization by AM fungi was determined in field samples 2–3 times over the growing season in crops in...

Organic large scale dairy farming – a model study of the effect of stocking rate and distance from dairy facilities to farm land on productivity, nutrient balance and economic result Organic Eprints
Kristensen, T.; Tvedegaard, N.; Kristensen, I.S..
Organic livestock farms, at least in the northern part of Europe, are dominated by rather specialized units with production based on only one type of livestock, as dairy cows. The specialization is followed by a steady increase in size of the production unit, both in number of livestock and area belonging to the farm. In Denmark has the average organic dairy farm changed from 83 cows and 100 ha in 2000 to 136 cows and 172 ha in 2010; also production per cow has increased in this period from 6825 kg milk annually to 8100 kg in 2010. Such rather large changes over a decade often results in layout of the farm with long distance from the dairy facilities to the farm land. In organic dairy farming this is especially challenging as the dairy herd need to have...

Vigilant servant leadership Organic Eprints
Hoare, B.
Over the last 70 years the Organic community has espoused a set of principles on which to farm, grow and live by. We have actively advocated the lifestyle, technologies and means to resolve many local and global issues which are now the titles of best-selling novels and treatise of recent times, Cradle to Cradle and Biomimicry to name a couple (Benyus 2002, McDonough & Braungart 2002). A carbon economy is exactly what we have espoused for decades. It is nice to feel we were right. Continuing on a theme in the previous editorial, it is also very frustrating times. It is difficult to celebrate when generations of work is not acknowledged, or actively ignored. The symptoms of frustration abound; little or no research funding for Organic systems...

Effect of Flock Size on Dioxin Levels in Eggs from Chickens Kept Outside Organic Eprints
Kijlstra, A.; Traag, W. A.; Hoogenboom, L. A. P..
To decrease dioxin uptake by the general population the European Union (EU) has set limits to the dioxin content of many foodstuffs including eggs. Eggs from free foraging chickens are known to have a higher dioxin content as compared to confined laying hens and it is the question whether these eggs can adhere to current EU regulations. The aim of the study was to investigate parameters that are involved in the contamination of eggs from chickens raised under “organic” conditions. Samples from 34 organic farms including soil and earth worm samples were collected between September and December of the year 2003. Dioxin levels were assayed by GC/MS. Various parameters were collected by on farm interviews. Egg dioxin content varied between 0.4 and 8.1 pg...

Ökologischer Anbau von Körner- und Grünfuttererbsen im Trockengebiet Österreichs – Ertragsleistung und Vorfruchtwirkung Organic Eprints
Pietsch, G.; Freyer, B..

Using the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART) for the Systematic Analysis of Trade-Offs and Synergies between Sustainability Dimensions and Themes at Farm Level Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Landert, Jan; Muller, Adrian; Ssebunya, Brian; Blockeel, Johan; Weisshaidinger, Rainer; Petrasek, Richard; Mészáros, Dóra; Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Lindenthal, Thomas; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes. To achieve this aim we used the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART)-Farm Tool which operationalizes the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) Guidelines by defining science-based indicator sets and assessment procedures. It identifies the degree of goal achievement with respect to the 58 themes defined in the SAFA Guidelines using an impact matrix that defines 327 indicators and 1769 relations between...

Measuring the risk of non-compliance in Italian organic farms with parametric and non parametric models Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Certification is an essential feature for organic products, and is based on controls/inspections to verify compliance with EU Reg. CE 834/07. Implementing a risk based inspection system can contribute to an effective and efficient organic control system, hence improving organic farming relative competitiveness. This study is part of the CERCOST EU project, and analyses data from inspections on a sample of Italian organic farms, aiming at the identification of management and structural risk factors contributing to the occurrence of non-compliances. Risk analysis is based on the estimation of both parametric and non-parametric models using negative binomial panel estimators and Bayesian network modelling.
