Nine decades of Spanish sardine Sardinella aurita exploitation in Venezuela, a critical revision Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez Gaspar,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT The Spanish sardine Sardinella aurita, is the most important fishing resource in Venezuela, on Margarita Island it began its fishing and canning. This review estimates catch over nine decades and causes of fishing continuity. In 90 years, 4,386,758 tons were caught, a modest volume due to poor statistics. Three management ordinances have been enacted the first appeared after 40 years of activity in canning plants. The sardine industry has four periods, the first between 1927 and 1973 without fishing regulation and another three (1974-2005; 2006-2013 and 2014-2017) when the ordinances are applied. In each one the catch, annual average, operating gears, the capture per unit of effort and relevant investigations are considerate. The current...

The Cytochrome Oxidase I gene confirms the presence of the nemertine Carcinonemertes conanobrieni, a parasite of the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) in Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
Berben,Amanda; Gonzalez-Cueto,Jaime; Colorado,Angie; Quiroga,Sigmer.
ABSTRACT Morphological identifications complemented with molecular analysis are important for the delimitation of cryptic species. This document contains annotations on the molecular identification of the parasitic nemertine Carcinonemertes conanobrieni in the Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus. The collected nemerteans were found parasitizing ovigerous lobsters from the Gulf of Salamanca (Puebloviejo), Colombia. DNA was extracted from a specimen and a fragment of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) was amplified using Folmer’s universal primers, the sequence was edited with ProSeq 3.5 and aligned with all the C. conanobrieni sequences available in GenBank. A sequence of 488 base pairs corresponding to the section of the genetic barcode...

Status of Lutjanus synagris in three protected areas of the Colombian Caribbean: assessment based on limited data Boletín de Investigaciones
Martínez-Viloria,Héctor Manuel; Franke-Ante,Rebeca; Narváez Barandica,Juan Carlos; De La Hoz Maestre,Javier.
ABSTRACT With the purpose of evaluating the status of the lane snapper Lutjanus synagris from limited catch length data from the landings of artisanal fishing catches recorded between 2006 and 2012 in Tayrona and Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo National Parks, and the Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca, simple indicators and the decision tree methodology were applied. it was observed that this indicator mostly configured a selectivity pattern represented in capture of mayoritary immature specimens (<L mat ) and a spawning biomass level lower than the target reference point, affecting the natural renewal of L. synagris stocks. Also, it was ratified the degree of overfishing for growth and recruitment to which L. synagris is subjected. Reducing pressure...

Mapping of mudflats with UAV images in La Bocana de Iscuandé, Colombian Pacific coast Boletín de Investigaciones
Mina-Cartagena,Camilo F.; Fuentes,José E.; González,Richard Johnston.
ABSTRACT Conservation planning for marine-coastal environments requires updated and detailed maps; the aim of this work is to generate detailed maps for two mudflats in the Iscuandé River Delta (Bocana de Iscuandé) in the Colombian Pacific Coast (Department of Nariño). These are important areas for fauna, especially migratory shorebirds. To address this problem, this study investigated the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as an alternative for collecting detailed mapping information in areas of difficult access using photogrammetric methods and a geographic information system (GIS). UAV images were used to generate maps with a high level of detail at a scale of 1:10,000 that include detailed information about environments such as mudflats and...

Sponges in Peru and their potential as a source of antibacterial compounds Boletín de Investigaciones
Cóndor-Luján,Báslavi; Francia-Quiroz,Juan C..
ABSTRACT In the last decades, sponges have emerged as the largest source of active compounds of animal origin for pharmaceutical purposes. In Peru information on these animals is incipient and scattered, which limits taking the right measures for their adequate management, exploitation, and conservation. The aim of this study is to provide an update on the scope and perspectives of sponge research in Peru, with an emphasis on species richness and their antibacterial potential. Likewise, research initiatives carried out in other South American Pacific countries are reviewed. Research efforts in Peru have allowed the description of 46 species; however, the sponge richness is underestimated. On the other hand, in other latitudes, active principles with...

New records of annelids from banco de las Ánimas, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Coneo-Gómez,Shanly; Sierra-Escrigas,Silvia; Dueñas-Ramírez,Pedro R.; García-Urueña,Rocío.
ABSTRACT The banco de las Ánimas is a poor studied underwater environment with a characteristic reef fauna and an unknown large number of cryptic species. Annelids are one of the most common invertebrate groups in the coral formations of the Colombian Caribbean; these organisms are very abundant and variable in their body shapes (parapodia, setae, and gill structures), which imply a great evolutionary radiation. In order to know the diversity of annelids in the reef ecosystem in the Banco de las Ánimas, four artificial structures (known as autonomous reef monitoring structures) used as fauna collectors were located at a depth of 14 m in the Montículo sector. The first records for the Colombian Caribbean of 23 species of annelids of the families...

Seasonal dynamics in the inner Guayas Estuary, Ecuador Boletín de Investigaciones
Marín Jarrín,María José; Marín Jarrín,José R.; Borbor-Córdova,Mercy J.; Espinoza Celi,Maria Esther; Domínguez-Granda,Luis.
ABSTRACT The Guayas estuary in Ecuador is the largest estuarine ecosystem on the Pacific coast of South America. This estuary provides nursery and fisheries habitats, as well as filtering and detoxification services provided by suspension feeders, vegetation, and wetlands. We used oceanographic and meteorological observations to understand the hydrodynamic variability of two areas in the inner part of the estuary, Manglares de Churute and Estero Salado, from February 2016 to February 2017. Churute has less anthropogenic impacts than Estero Salado, which is currently uncoupled from river flow and highly influenced by Guayaquil, the second largest city in Ecuador, and adjacent shrimp pond effluents. The influences from the ocean and river on Churute include...

Coastal vulnerability to sea level rise in the southwestern Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
García Echavarría,Luz Marleny; Alcántara-Carrió,Javier; Jaramillo Vélez,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT One of the concerns about climate change is the rise in sea level, which is associated with an increase in coastal erosion, saline intrusion in estuaries and the risk of flooding. These changes make it necessary to evaluate the coastal susceptibility and its adaptation capacity facing with this phenomenon. The Coastal Vulnerability Index made up of the variables geomorphology, slope, rate of change of coastline, significant wave height, rate of change of relative sea level and mean tidal range, seeks to locally estimate vulnerability. This work focused on determining the Vulnerability in the coastline of the sectors Volcán de Lodo, Río Hobo, Zapata and Punta Las Vacas through the use of aerial photographs, satellite images, in situ data and...

Community structure of microfitobenthos from the central coastal zone of Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones
Pereira,Carlos; De Roa,Evelyn Zoppi; Montiel,Edie; Hernández,Vanessa; Castillo,Anyoelis.
ABSTRACT Microphytobenthos is a community that groups benthic photosynthetic microorganisms. In Venezuela and the other countries in the Caribbean Sea, this group has been scarcely studied, so its diversity is unknown. This study aims to describe the spatial and temporal variations of its composition and abundance in the central coastal zone of Venezuela. Samplings were conducted monthly from June 2014 to March 2015, in random stations at depths less than 20 m. Richness and abundance data were processed through multivariate hypothesis tests (Anosim - SIMPER - nMDS). A total of 327 species were identified, with a dominance of diatoms and dinoflagellates, without significant spatial and temporal variations. In terms of abundance, the most representative...

Preliminary assessment of the impact of Hurricane Iota on coral reefs in Providencia and Santa Catalina Islands Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez,Carlos E.; Millán,Santiago; Acosta-Chaparro,Andrés; Abril-Howard,Alfredo; Navas-Camacho,Raúl.
ABSTRACT Hurricanes are important natural destructive forces for coral reefs that can change the structural component of the habitat. On November 16th, 2020, the hurricane Iota passed ~10 km north of the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina with sustained winds of a category 5 hurricane. The purpose of this study was to document the magnitude of the impact on coral reefs around the islands two weeks after the hit, as part of the “Operación Cangrejo Negro”. Visual assessments were performed at 11 representative coral reef formations between 2 and 17 m depth. Estimates of the impact were evaluated within an approximate area of 200 m2, which was categorized with score values ranging from 0 to 5 according to the level of damage. Preliminary estimates at...

Trash in paradise: marine debris on the beaches of San Andrés Island, Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gavio,Brigitte; Vargas-Llanos,July Paulin; Mancera-Pineda,José Ernesto.
ABSTRACT San Andres Island is one of the main touristic places in Colombia, and its main attractions are its sandy beaches and the marine coastal ecosystems, such as coral reef and seagrass beds. However improper behavior of both residents and tourists on solid residue disposal may threaten not only the aesthetic of the island´s beaches, but also poses risk to marine life. The objective of this research was to assess the amount of litter on the main beaches of the island. We surveyed three popular beaches for ten weeks. We collected 9894 units of litter, equivalent to a weight of 23 212.47 g. Beach cleanliness was estimated using the Clean Coast Index, and two of the three sites resulted “extremely dirty”, while the third was classified as “dirty”. The...

Pycnogonida of Mexican waters: A checklist with observations on diversity and ecology Boletín de Investigaciones
Ramírez-Tello,Luis Miguel; Tello-Musi,José Luis; López-García,Roberto.
ABSTRACT This work is an updated checklist of Mexican Pycnogonida species for both oceans, the Mexican Pacific (PA) and the Gulf of Mexico (GMx). This research was carried out based on the first historical records by Schimkewitsch in 1893 up to the present day. The number of recorded species increased in this study. The total number of species in Mexican oceans is 58, distributed among 19 genera and 10 families. All records were cross-referenced with the original literature, and those found to be questionable were deleted from the checklist. With the data reported in this checklist, an extrapolation of the total number of species was performed using rarefaction curves, thus demonstrating that the recorded species fell well below the projected diversity....

Acosta-Chaparro,Andrés; Sánchez-Valencia,Laura; Gómez-López,Diana Isabel; Gónzalez-Corredor,Juan David; Navas-Camacho,Raúl.
ABSTRACT Seagrass meadows have stood out for being very effective fixing atmospheric carbon, among others, due to their ability to produce plant biomass. Therefore, the values of shoot density (m2), biomass (cores) and carbon present in 12 locations with Thalassia testudinum at the Colombian Caribbean (La Guajira and San Andrés Island) were quantified. The biological samples were processed in laboratory until obtaining the values of aerial, underground and total dry weight, and the estimation of the carbon was stablishing from a ratio of 35 % of the dry biomass. Statistical tests were carried out to determine significant differences between the sites, highlighting the aerial biomass in La Guajira and the underground biomass in San Andrés. It was calculated...

Women in fishing activity: A look at the contribution of the platoneras of Buenaventura, Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
Garay Tapias,Andrea; Contreras Araque,Andrea; Escobar Toledo,Fabián.
ABSTRACT An analysis of the value chain of the trawl fishery in the Pacific, showed that more than 50 % of the jobs generated in this fishery are occupied by women, and that half of these are provided by the platoneras of the Buenaventura district. The platoneras are afro-descendant women who market fish products based on the bycatch of this fishery and who are an integral part of the trawl fishery. Ignoring the contribution to the local economy and the fishing sector, this study describes the role of platoneras in the trawl fishery to map the value chain sensitive to gender and nutrition. For this, 123 direct surveys to platoneras in five marketing points of the district were applied. The analysis showed that they receive an average of $87,500 COP per...
