Tropical and Subtropical Maize in Asia: Production Systems, Constraints, and Research Priorities AgEcon
Gerpacio, Roberta V.; Pingali, Prabhu L..
This book examines future technological and policy prospects for the sustainable intensification of rainfed upland maize production in Asia, and derives R&D priorities for specific maize production environments and markets. Village-level and farmer-group surveys were conducted to characterize upland maize production environments and systems in China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Survey findings, particularly farmer-identified constraints to maize production, complemented with other relevant data, were used in country-level, R&D priority-setting workshops. High on the list of farmer constraints was drought, estimated to affect three production environments that are home to about 48 million rural poor and produce...

Beneficios privados y beneficios sociales en la cadena de la manzana para la exportación en el Uruguay. AgEcon
Rava, Catalina; Lanfranco, Bruno A.; Ferraro, Bruno.

Improved drying of high moisture grains AgEcon
McLeod, Ross.
An economic evaluation of three ACIAR projects whose primary objective was to improve postharvest grain drying in Thailand and Australia is provided in this report. During 1983–1996, ACIAR invested A$1.2 million in research designed to improve grain drying in these countries. Based on current adoption, the investment has resulted in a realised net present value of A$3.6 million. A benefit–cost ratio of 3:1 was estimated for the projects. In other words, for each dollar invested, three dollars of project benefits have resulted. A high proportion of realised benefits was estimated to accrue to Australian rice producers, through reduced grain drying costs, while benefits have also been captured by the Thai rice production industry through reduced postharvest...

Locally managed irrigation systems: essential tasks and implications for assistance, management transfer and turnover programs AgEcon
Yoder, Robert.
This monograph examines the construction, operation and maintenance tasks that shape the nature of locally managed irrigation systems. The objective of the book is to identify relevant experiences and lessons for staff who are responsible for working with locally managed systems in three types of programs: direct assistance to existing locally managed irrigation systems, turnover of public owned systems to local management, and transfer of partial management to farmer groups within larger systems that remain publicly controlled.

ANALYSIS OF THE ROMANIAN AGRICULTURE IN THE PERIOD OF TRANSITION, BASED ON THE NATIONAL ACCOUNTS AgEcon
Vincze, Maria-Magdolna; Madaras, Szilard.
The purpose of this paper is to present the changes occurred during the transition period in the role and place of agriculture in the Romanian economy. The main methodological instruments used are the national Input-Output Tables for 1999-2004 published in the National Accounts. We have also used figures from the Regional Accounts to put into evidence regional differences in total GDP and the GDP of agriculture. Input-Output analysis is an analytical tool recognized as one of the most significant contributions to the economic theory and applications, but rarely used in agricultural economics for quantifying the structural changes of the economic activities. The first part of the paper presents the general equilibrium situation of the Romanian economy and...

How Effective is the Invisible Hand? Agricultural and Food Markets in Central and Eastern Europe AgEcon

Since the seminal work of Adam Smith, markets have been considered an efficient tool for co-ordinating the behaviour of economic agents. The basic characteristic of a market economy is that the complex system of interaction among individuals is not centrally coordinated. Under the assumption of profit and utility maximisation (and a whole set of assumptions about the institutional framework), relative prices and their change over time provide the signals that guide, like an invisible hand, the allocation of resources, i.e., the structure of production and the intensity of input use in the various production processes. They do this by co-ordinating the activities of economic agents, i.e., of resource owners, producers, intermediaries, traders, and...

Adding value to fresh and processed produce through product certification AgEcon
Napitupulu, Togar Alam; Natawidjaja, Ronnie S..
The current trend in world trade of agro-food, and the change in consumer demand patterns for food and agricultural products, has led to a fast growth of multi-national chains of retail stores in major cities in developing countries and growth in domestic retail store chains. Their presence opens a new market for high quality agro-food. While many products come from overseas, many can also be supplied locally by farmers or farmers’ co-operatives or associations provided that they meet the quality and supply standards required by the store. To study and identify specific benefits from this global economic trend that can be tapped by secondary crops farmers, specifically those living in medium altitude areas, two studies were conducted in two member...
