The in vitro fungitoxic effect of three biofertilizers, E.M.-4, Multibion Ô and Supermagro used in organic agriculture and the neem oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) on the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana was studied. These products were mixed in a medium where the two fungi were inoculated, and germination, vegetative growth and conidiogenesis were assessed. The biofertilizers Supermagro and E.M.- 4 showed to be less toxic for the two fungi whereas MultibionÔ caused major inhibition on M. anisopliae, with reductions in germination (-37.74%), colony diameter (-30.26%) and conidiogenesis (-42.62%). Neem oil promoted a larger negative effect on B. bassiana, inhibiting germination (-45.27%), colony diameter (-36.62%) and... |

Few agriculture books achieve the status of ‘classic’. F. H. King’s book Farmers of Forty Centuries or Permanent Agriculture in China, Korea and Japan was privately published in Wisconsin, USA, in 1911. The book had an in-auspicious start, and the longevity and acclaim that this book has since achieved must have been, then, barely conceivable. The author was dead, the book was incomplete, and there was no commercial publisher. Yet through a combination of perhaps luck and circumstance the book was ‘resurrected’ in 1927 by a London publisher, Jonathan Cape, who then kept it in print for more than two decades. The London issue of King’s book was favorably cited in the 1930s and 1940s by leading agriculture and organic agriculture writers including: Lord... |

The aim of this PhD thesis was to calculate the cost-effectiveness of organic farming in achieving environmental policy targets compared to single-agri-environmental policies. Using a theoretical model, it was demonstrated that financial support for organic farming does not in principle contradict the Tinbergen Rule, even if there are other targeted policy measures which are more cost-effective in achieving specific environmental goals. Hence, organic farming should be included as an option within a mix of other policies as long as its costeffectiveness with respect to the overall set of policy goals is superior to that of a combination of other policy instruments. The cost-effectiveness of agri-environmental policies can be understood as a function of... |

Organic agriculture in Australia is a success story. Certified organic agriculture in Australia accounts for 35.6 million hectares which is 8.8% of Australia’s agricultural land. The rate of growth of organics in Australia has been16.5% per annum for the past two decades. Based on certified hectares, Australia is now the world leader in organics, and now accounts for more than fifty percent of the world’s certified organic hectares. The development of organic agriculture throughout Australia has been somewhat uneven. The map of organic agriculture in Australia, reveals that South Australia and Queensland are the standout leaders based on certified hectares. Western Australia is underperforming on this metric (as are also Victoria and Tasmania). The map... |
