A female and three males of Procamacolaimus tubifer Gerlach, 1953 are described and illustrated from Cape Receife Beach, Port Elizabeth. <i<P. africanus sp.nov. is also described from Cape Receife Beach. It is compared with P. tubifer which it resembles but from which it can be differentiated by length of the buccal cavity, amphid size and the shape of the spicules. Eontolaimus capensis gen.nov., sp.nov. is described, also from the same sandy beach. This new genus is related to Deontolaimus papillatus de Man, 1880 from which it can be distinguished, among other things, by the absence of a tooth-like structure in the buccal cavity and the presence of pre-anal tubuli. |

Halicyclops magniceps (Lilljeborg, 1853) is an inhabitant of brackish waters along the European Atlantic coasts from Germany south, and of Algeria (Dussart, 1969). During five years of investigation of a shallow brackish water pool in northern Belgium, we found the species to be the only quantitatively important cyclopoid copepod. It shows a clear yearly cycle, with one prominent peak in summer (Heip, 1973). It appears at the end of April or the beginning of May, and disappears again in October or November. Because a previous investigation, carried out in summer, had shown that copepods do not occur below a depth of 3-4 cm in the sediment, samples were limited to the first five centimeters of the sediment and included a water column of... |

It is generally accepted, that a major constraint in the further development of marine fish and crustacean aquaculture, is the variable quality of eggs and larvae used for the hatchery-production of fry. Nonetheless, valid criteria to evaluate optimal egg quality have not been identified yet. Instead, particular indicators, are used, e.g. the fertilization and hatching rate, overall culture success during the first rearing period, etc., but these are not totally objective because hatchery-specific conditions may interfere. The biochemical composition of the egg may be one of the possible determinants of egg quality, which can be evaluated on a more objectie basis. In this respect, studied have been initiated to analyze in freshly-released eggs, the levels... |

In the framework of research on mariculture at the "Institute for Marine Scientific Research" (IZWO), the "Laboratory for Biological Research in Environmental Pollution" at the State University of Ghent, is focusing on culturing problems of the brine shrimp Artemia salina. The following research topics are discussed: 1. The mechanisms leading to the hatching of Artemia cysts are reviewed and complemented with new data on the sensitivity to light and temperature, and on the reversibility of the development within the cyst. The possible influences of the collecting, sorting, and packaging processes on the quality of the cysts are discussed. 2. Since in the literature much confusion exists concerning the mechanisms... |

Five opisthobranch species were collected during the Belgian and Belgian-Dutch Antarctica expeditions to the Riiser-Larsen Sea, the Princess Ragnhild Coast ("Mission Iris") (1960-1967) and Admiralty Bay (King George Island) (1987-1991). These species include Philine alata Thiele, 1912, Bathyberthella antarctica Willan & Bertsch, 1987, Notaeolidia gigas Eliot, 1905, Aegires (Anaegires) albus Thiele, 1912 and Austrodoris kerguelenensis Bergh, 1884. This material is deposited in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The present contribution provides anatomical and faunistic data on this collection and extends the distributional range of several species. |

At the Zeebrugge harbour (Belgium) a cross-section of the N.W.-breakwater has been instrumented for the study of physical processes related to the behaviour of a prototype rubble mound breakwater in random wave conditions. Within the EC MAST programme (project MAS02-CT92-0023) this monitoring system has been reengineered and extended to a high-quality full scale data acquisition centre (Troch et al., 1995). The development of the prototype monitoring system to a world-wide unique system with respect to the infrastructure available at Zeebrugge, the instrumentation installed on site, and the data management developed, is briefly summarised. Filed measurements of wave attack in front of the breakwater, and pore pressure response inside the breakwater core,... |

A multivariate statistical evaluation technique, non-linear mapping, is proposed to extract information from a multielement microbeam proton-induced X-ray emission data set. Individual aerosol particles, collected in the North Sea troposphere, were classified according to their composition. Several groups of particles were identified and suggestions were made for their sources. |
