Theory testing (hypothesis testing) in agricultural economics AgEcon
Meszaros, Sandor.
According to Karl Popper, economics and agricultural economics should be deemed scientific if the theories (hypotheses) are subject to strict tests. The testing of agro-economic theories goes back 50 years in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and these methods are becoming increasingly part of educational research methodology. In fact, the author of this paper teaches this very subject at Debrecen University, and for this reason has endeavoured to provide an overview on current trends in this field. The present overview first discusses the role of testing in the research process (cognition), and then analyses the various classification methods (types) of testing. It deals in detail with the application of the (microeconomic) production-theory in...

MARKET IMPERFECTIONS AND CLASS STRUCTURE: THE CASE OF SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Lovo, Stefania.
Land and market imperfections shape the organization of agricultural production and lead to different production regimes within rural farm households in South Africa. This paper presents a theoretical model to explain the presence of three main households groups (classes) determined on the basis of the labor regime adopted: small peasants (working both on and off farm), self cultivators (autarkic in labor) and hiring in households. Membership in the three categories is determined by the endogenous shadow wage and the effective market wages. A generalized ordered logit model is used to test the main predictions of the model. Market imperfections, which prevent household from accessing markets, are expected to have different impacts on heterogenous...

Price Cointegration Analyses of Food Crop Markets: The case of Wheat and Teff Commodities in Northern Ethiopia AgEcon
Jaleta, Moti; Gebremedhin, Berhanu.
This paper examines the cointegration of grain market prices in Northern Ethiopia. Results are based on bi-monthly retail price data on wheat and teff collected from six markets in the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia. The data has 55 observations for each of the two crops in each of the six markets ranging over a period of May 2006 to October 2008. Johansen’s cointegration test reveals that most markets are cointegrated in wheat and teff retail prices. There is an indication that retail prices at Abi-Adi, a town located relatively farther away from the main asphalt road, is less integrated to other markets. This implies that infrastructural development is crucial for spatial market integration through market information transmission and physical...

VISITOR PREFERENCES AND VALUES FOR WATER-BASED RECREATION: A CASE STUDY OF THE OCALA NATIONAL FOREST AgEcon
Shrestha, Ram K.; Alavalapati, Janaki R.R.; Stein, Taylor V.; Carter, Douglas R.; Denny, Christine B..
We used the open-ended contingent valuation method to elicit willingnes to pay (WTP) for day visitors and extended visitors on the Ocala National Forest (ONF), Florida. A Tobit model specification was applied to account for the issues involved with censored WTP bids. The results reveal that visitors would pay more for improved recreational facilities at the ONF. In particular, our estimates show that visitors would pay $1 million for basic facilities, $1.9 million for moderate improvements, and $2.5 million for more improvements.

MANAGING PRICE VOLATILITY IN AN OPEN ECONOMY ENVIRONMENT: THE CASE OF EDIBLE OILS AND OILSEEDS IN INDIA AgEcon
Srinivasan, P.V..
This study examines the impact of alternative price stabilization policies for edible oils and oilseeds in India on the farmers growing oilseeds, the consumers of edible oils and the processing sector with the help of a multi market equilibrium dynamic simulation model. Price stability in the edible oil sector is important at least for two reasons. It can help realize the growth potential in the production of edible oils and improve the nutritional security of Indian households. While efficiency considerations suggest the linking of domestic to world prices, extreme fluctuations in price have to be avoided, for they can lead to undesirable consequences both at the macro and micro levels. The questions addressed in this study include the following. What is...

Black-Box Frontiers and Implications for Development Policy – Theoretical Considerations AgEcon
Sauer, Johannes; Frohberg, Klaus; Hockmann, Heinrich.
The availability of efficiency estimation software – freely distributed via the internet and relatively easy to use – recently inflated the number of corresponding applications. The resulting efficiency estimates are used without a critical assessment with respect to the literature on theoretical consistency, flexibility and the choice of the appropriate functional form. The robustness of policy suggestions based on inferences from efficiency measures nevertheless crucially depends on theoretically well-founded estimates. This paper addresses stochastic efficiency measurement by critically reviewing the theoretical consistency of recently published technical efficiency estimates with respect to economic development. The results confirm the need for a...

A Study on Economic Analysis of Elephant Foot Yam Production in India AgEcon
Srinivas, T.; Ramanathan, S..
Elephant foot yam is traditionally cultivated on commercial scales in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal. The statistics on area, production and yield of this crop are not available in the literature and this paper has estimated the cost of cultivation, farm income measures and resource-use efficiency of the crop in these states, except West Bengal. The study has indicated the gross cost of cultivation as Rs 1,73,105, Rs 93,450 and Rs 1,68,032 per ha and the benefit-cost ratios as 1.38, 1.38 and 1.50 for elephant foot yam cultivation in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, respectively. The study has revealed excessive use of all NPK fertilizers in Kerala, indicating the need for rationalization in use of these inputs, while...

Leveraging regional growth dynamics in African agriculture AgEcon
Abdulai, Awudu; Johnson, Michael; Diao, Xinshen.
This study focuses on public investments and policy reforms for leveraging growth spillovers at the Africa regional level. It reviews first the theory and evidence of knowledge and growth spillovers generally and second the evidence in the African context. Given the limited and scattered evidence of actual past spillovers, it reviews recent ex ante simulations using partial and general equilibrium models to stress the potential for spillovers from greater cooperation in agricultural research, and from trade liberalization, policy harmonization and investments in infrastructure. The results show that permitting greater crossborder transfers and adopting improved technologies could have large spillover multiplier effects on overall economic welfare in the...

Implications of Transgenic Rice for Farm Households' Nutritional Vulnerability: Projections for Bangladesh AgEcon
Liang, Yan; Reaves, Dixie Watts; Norton, George W..
This paper employs multivariate regression to forecast the calorie intake of Bangladeshi farm households in the hunger season based on the household income, production, and demographic composition in the current (post harvest) season. Nutritional vulnerability profiles are derived from the estimation of ex ante mean and variance of future consumption. The results show the income increase induced by introducing transgenic rice will reduce each individual household's probability of suffering a future consumption shortfall and its vulnerability. The overall vulnerability profile of farm households improves in Bangladesh.

Measuring the Impact of a BSE Announcement on U.S. Retail Beef Sales: A Time-Series Analysis AgEcon
Crowley, Christian S.L.; Shimazaki, Yoshiaki.
On December 23, 2003, Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced that the United States Department of Agriculture had diagnosed the first U.S. case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as “mad cow disease.” This study uses supermarket sales data to analyze the effect of the BSE announcement on U.S. retail beef sales, finding a statistically significant disruption of sales. In addition, we develop a forecast of retail beef sales revenues in the hypothetical absence of BSE. The forecast implies that the BSE announcement may have reduced domestic retail beef revenues in excess of $11 billion in the post-BSE period.

Social Learning, Neighborhood Effects, and Investment in Human Capital: Evidence from Green-Revolution India AgEcon
Yamauchi, Futoshi.
This paper empirically identifies social learning and neighborhood effects in schooling investments in a new technology regime. The estimates of learning-investment rule from farm household panel data at the onset of the Green Revolution in India, show that (1) agents learn about schooling returns from income realizations of their neighbors and (2) schooling distribution of the parents’ generation in a community has externalities to schooling investments in children that are consistent with social learning. Simulations show that variations in schooling distributions within and across communities generate through social learning substantial variations in child enrollment rate and average household income. The results suggest that imperfect information...

Estimating the Adoption of Bt Eggplant in India: Who Benefits from Public-Private Partnership? AgEcon
Krishna, Vijesh V.; Qaim, Matin.
The study analyzes ex-ante the adoption of insect resistant Bt eggplant in India. Farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) is estimated using the contingent valuation method. Given the economic importance of insect pests, the average WTP for proprietary Bt hybrids is more than four times the current price of conventional hybrids. Since the private innovating firm has shared its technology with the public sector, it is likely that public open-pollinated Bt varieties will also be released after a small delay. This will reduce farmers' WTP for Bt hybrids by 35%, thus decreasing the scope for corporate pricing policies. Nonetheless, ample profit potential remains. Analysis of factors influencing farmers' adoption decisions demonstrates that public Bt varieties will...

The FAST Method: Estimating Unconditional Demand Elasticities for Processed Foods in the Presence of Fixed Effects AgEcon
Bergtold, Jason S.; Akobundu, Eberechukwu; Peterson, Everett B..
This study estimates a set of unconditional own-price and expenditure elasticities across time for 49 processed food categories using scanner data and the FAST multi-stage demand system with fixed effects across time. Estimated own-price elasticities are generally much larger, in absolute terms, than previous estimates, while our expenditure elasticities are generally much lower. The use of disaggregated product groupings, scanner data, and the estimation of unconditional elasticities likely accounts for these differences. Results of the study suggest providing more disaggregate product-level demand elasticities could aid in the economic analysis of issues relating to industry competitiveness or the impact of public policy.

"GREEN BOX" MEASURES FOR AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT: HOW DECOUPLED CAN THEY REALLY BE? AN INVESTIGATION WITHIN SAM AND CGE FRAMEWORKS AgEcon
Sayan, Serdar; Tin, Ela.
The Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture classified some subsidies as "Green Box" measures and presuming that they would not distort production/trade patterns, kept them outside the AMS reduction commitments. This study investigates the validity of this view through simulation results from SAM multiplier and CGE analyses for the US economy.

AZ ÖKOMARKETING GYAKORLATI MEGVALÓSULÁSA AZ ÉLELMISZER-GAZDASÁGBAN AgEcon
Szolnoki Gyozone Karkus, Maria.
Az Európai Unióba való belépésünkkel a környezetvédelem, a fenntartható fejlődés minden területen nagyobb hangsúlyt kap. Különösen igaz ez az élelmi-szer-gazdaságra. Azok a kutatások is felértékelődhetnek ennek tükrében, ame-lyek a környezet-gazdaságtan különböző területein folynak. A szerző évek óta foglalkozik az ökomarketing elméleti és módszertani kérdéseivel, kutatásának eredményeit kétrészes tanulmányban adja közre. A tanulmány első részében arra vállalkozott, hogy a nemzetközi szakiroda-lom alapján bemutassa az ökomarketing kutatás főbb állomásait, új irányzatait. A szerző tanulmánya két célt tűzött maga elé. Először azt kívánja bizonyítani, hogy az élelmiszer-gazdaság mind inputjai, mind outputjai oldaláról tekintve környezeti szempontból...
