In vitro antifungal activity of four chemotypes of Lippia alba (Verbenaceae) essential oils against Alternaria solani (Pleosporeaceae) isolates Anais da ABC (AABC)
TOMAZONI,ELISA Z.; PANSERA,MÁRCIA R.; PAULETTI,GABRIEL F.; MOURA,SIDNEI; RIBEIRO,RUTE T.S.; SCHWAMBACH,JOSÉLI.
Several volatile natural compounds produced by plant secondary metabolism have been proven to present antimicrobial action, enabling their use in phytopathogen control. They also present low environmental impact when compared to conventional pesticides. Essential oils contain these compounds and can be found in several plant species, such as Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Brown (Verbenaceae). Essential oils of four chemotypes of L. alba, characterized by their major compounds, namely camphor, citral, linalool and camphor/1,8-cineole, were tested against the phytopathogen Alternaria solani Sorauer (Pleosporaceae), which causes early blight on tomatoes and is responsible for great economic losses regarding production. Essential oils antifungal action was tested in...

Synthesis and evaluation of arylamidine derivatives for new antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities Anais da ABC (AABC)
MONTE,ZENAIDE S.; SILVA,AMANDA M.; LIMA,GLÁUCIA M.S.; SILVA,TERESINHA G. DA; MARQUES,KARLA M.R.; RODRIGUES,MARIA D.; FALCÃO,EMERSON P.S.; MELO,SEBASTIÃO J..
ABSTRACT A series of arylamidines 3a-j was designed, synthesized and investigated for antimicrobial activity. Structures of the compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR and a 2D spectroscopic study was performed. A preliminary screening of the antimicrobial tests clearly showed that three out of ten arylamidines, viz, 3f, 3g and 3i, were effective against all the gram-negative bacteria: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enteric; and against the yeast, candida albicans. Further, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) against the bacteria and yeast were determined. All compounds 3a-d, 3f, 3g, 3i and 3j were also investigated for their low cytotoxic effects on tested cell lines. Compounds 3d and 3f were the most...

Investigation of potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis of cellular stability after the exposure of agricultural workers to pesticides Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALVES,JODEL S.; SILVA,FERNANDA R. DA; SILVA,GABRIELI F. DA; SALVADOR,MIRIAN; KVITKO,KÁTIA; ROHR,PAULA; SANTOS,CARLA E.I. DOS; DIAS,JOHNNY F.; HENRIQUES,JOÃO A.P.; SILVA,JULIANA DA.
ABSTRACT Agricultural workers involved in the harvest of tobacco crops are regularly exposed to large quantities of pesticides. In order to determine how this exposure to pesticides induces genetic alterations in these workers, blood samples were obtained from 77 exposed individuals, as well as from 60 unexposed subjects. DNA damage was analyzed by the Comet assay and by the micronucleus (MN) test. The antioxidant profile was evaluated by activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the polymorphism of gene PON1 was used as a susceptibility biomarker. The content of inorganic elements in the blood samples was determined by PIXE analysis. Our results demonstrated that the damage frequency, damage index, the MN frequency, and the SOD activity were...

Deformation of Mitochondrial Cristae in Human Neural Progenitor Cells Exposed to Valproic Acid Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,RODRIGO M. DA; KARMIRIAN,KARINA; REHEN,STEVENS K..
ABSTRACT Neural development represents a dynamic process where mitochondrial integrity is decisive for neuronal activity. Structural changes in these organelles may be related to neurological disorders. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsive drug commonly used for epilepsy treatment and its use is associated to increased risk of neuropsychiatric disorders. Recently we showed changes in shape and membrane potential in mitochondria from human neural progenitor cells (NPCs) exposed to VPA (da Costa et al. 2015). Here, we applied transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography to evaluate mitochondrial damage caused by VPA in NPCs. Results showed mitochondrial cristae disorganization in a dose dependent manner. Disturbance in mitochondrial...

Interpretation of the stiffness and permeability of Sand-Kaolin mixtures in the framework of homogenization Anais da ABC (AABC)
Boutin,Claude; Kacprzak,Gregory; Doanh,Thiep.
This study deals with the behaviour of mixtures of sand and saturated kaolin paste considered as composite materials made of permeable and deformable (with non-linear behaviour) matrix (the kaolin paste) with rigid and impervious inclusions (the sand grains). Oedometric and permeability tests conducted on such mixtures highlight the key role of the state of the clay paste, and show the existence of a threshold of sand grain concentration above which a structuring effect influences both modulus and permeability. At the light of these experiments, the usual and tangent homogenization process (with simplifying assumptions to make the problem manageable) has been applied to estimate the mixture permeability and tangent compressibility. Qualitative and...

Physiological and biochemical changes during the loss of desiccation tolerance in germinating Adenanthera pavonina L. seeds Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOARES,GIULIANA C.M.; DIAS,DENISE C.F.S.; FARIA,JOSÉ M.R.; BORGES,EDUARDO E.L..
ABSTRACT We investigated the loss of desiccation tolerance (DT) in Adenanthera pavonina seeds during germination. Seeds were subjected to imbibition for 0, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 81 h, then dried to their initial moisture content (13%), rehydrated and evaluated for survival (resumption of growth and development of normal seedlings) and membrane system integrity (electrolyte leakage). Embryonic axes of seeds subjected only to imbibition during the same early time periods were used to investigate the electrophoretic patterns of heat-stable proteins and the relative nuclear DNA content. In A. pavonina seeds, DT remained unchanged until 36 h of imbibition (resulting in germination and 82% normal seedlings), after which it was progressively lost, and seeds with a...

Changes in adipose cells of Longissimus dorsi muscle in Iberian pigs raised under extensive conditions Anais da ABC (AABC)
AYUSO,DOLORES; GONZÁLEZ,ANA; PEÑA,FRANCISCO; IZQUIERDO,MERCEDES.
ABSTRACT Twenty-four Iberian castrated male pigs were used to characterize and evaluate the effect of the duration of “Montanera” in the adipocytes size and its relation with the backfat thickness and intramuscular fat. The animals were fed under extensive conditions during 30, 60 and 90 days in the “Dehesa” before slaughtered. Carcass weight, percentage of intramuscular fat, thickness of backfat and its three layers and adipocytes size of the intramuscular fat were obtained. The group which expended 90 days on fattening obtained the highest adipocytes, with an area higher by a 50% than those that only expended 30 days. The differences in diameter and perimeter adipocyte were not as marked as area. A significant positive correlation between the diameter,...

The role of natural products in modern drug discovery. Anais da ABC (AABC)
CALIXTO,JOÃO B..
Abstract: The global medicine market is about 1.1 trillion US dollars. About 35 percent of medicines have originated from natural products. Brazil presents the largest biodiversity in the world, with more than 50,000 species of higher plants. However, few innovative products have been developed in Brazil from active constituents derived from the Brazilian biodiversity. Scientific evidences on plants and venoms have been internationally published by Brazilian scientists over the last 4 decades; but few examples of innovative products are commercially available. Few examples include the anti-hypertensive drug captopril first identified in the venom of the Brazilian viper Bothrops jararaca by Professor Sergio Ferreira; and some phytotherapeutic agents such as...

Approaches to the mechanisms of song memorization and singing provide evidence for a procedural memory Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hultsch,Henrike; Todt,Dietmar.
There is growing evidence that, during song learning, birds do not only acquire 'what to sing' (the inventory of behavior), but also 'how to sing' (the singing program), including order-features of song sequencing. Common Nightingales Luscinia megarhynchos acquire such serial information by segmenting long strings of heard songs into smaller subsets or packages, by a process reminiscent of the chunking of information as a coding mechanism in short term memory. Here we report three tutoring experiments on nightingales that examined whether such 'chunking' was susceptible to experimental cueing. The experiments tested whether (1) 'temporal phrasing' (silent intersong intervals spaced out at particular positions of a tutored string), or (2) 'stimulus novelty'...

Does mating interfere in the biological characteristics of a population of Trichogramma pretiosum? Anais da ABC (AABC)
PRATISSOLI,DIRCEU; KLOSS,THIAGO G.; ZINGER,FERNANDO D.; CARVALHO,JOSÉ R. DE; VIANNA,ULYSSES R.; PAES,JOÃO P.P..
Trichogramma spp. are parasitoids used in the regulation of insect populations that can cause economic damage. In order to ensure good performance, understanding some of their biological characteristics is essential. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether mating interferes with the biological characteristics of a population of Trichogramma pretiosum collected in the field. In all experiments, groups of mated and unmated females were used. We also verified any interference from mating on the biological characteristics of the offspring. We found that mating can alter the parasitism and longevity of genitor females, in addition to changing longevity among the descendants, but once parasitized, the eggs develop normally, showing similar emergence...

The Extended Log-Logistic Distribution: Properties and Application Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIMA,STÊNIO R.; CORDEIRO,GAUSS M..
Abstract We propose a new four-parameter lifetime model, called the extended log-logistic distribution, to generalize the two-parameter log-logistic model. The new model is quite flexible to analyze positive data. We provide some mathematical properties including explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, probability weighted moments, mean deviations, quantile function and entropy measure. The estimation of the model parameters is performed by maximum likelihood using the BFGS algorithm. The flexibility of the new model is illustrated by means of an application to a real data set. We hope that the new distribution will serve as an alternative model to other useful distributions for modeling positive real data in many areas.

Active caspase-3 expression levels as bioindicator of individual radiosensitivity Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,NEYLIANE F.G. DOS; SILVA,RAFAEL F.; PINTO,MARCELA M.P.L.; SILVA,EDVANE B. DA; TASAT,DEBORAH R.; AMARAL,ADEMIR.
ABSTRACT Several molecules and events involved in cell response to radiation-induced damage have been investigated towards a personalized radiotherapy. Considering the importance of active caspase-3 in the proteolytic cascade that ensures radiation-induced apoptosis execution, this research was designed to evaluate the expression levels of this protein as a bioindicator of individual radiosensitivity. Peripheral blood samples of 10 healthy individuals were gamma-irradiated (cobalt-60 source) with 1, 2 and 4 Gy (control: non-irradiated samples), and active caspase-3 expression levels were measured in lymphocytes, by flow cytometry, ex vivo and after different times of in vitro incubation (24, 48 and 72 hours). Short-term incubation of 24 h was the most...

Integral transform analysis of radionuclide transport in variably saturated media using a physical non-equilibrium model: application to solid waste leaching at a uranium mining installation Anais da ABC (AABC)
Cotta,Renato M.; Naveira-Cotta,Carolina P.; Genuchten,Martinus T.; Su,Jian; Quaresma,João N.N..
Abstract: The Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) was employed to simulate transient one-dimensional flow in variably saturated porous media, as well as radioactive waste transport within different layers (a solid waste pile, nearby soil, and a granular aquifer) towards the edge of a uranium mining installation under institutional control. Computational codes, written using the Mathematica software system, were implemented and tested for solution of the coupled advection-dispersion equations for an arbitrary number of daughter products within a radioactive chain migrating in saturated and unsaturated soil layers. The computer simulations were verified in great detail against results obtained using the built-in routine NDSolve of the Mathematica...
