This study determined germination responses of 19 species, including trees, shrubs, vines, and herbs, under natural gap and non-gap conditions, in a secondary forest in Chiloé Island, southern Chile, in order to assess if there is any association between the habitat where the seedlings of these plant species occur and their germination requirements. Statistical differences in percentage seed germination were detected in six species in a gap habitat compared to the understory. Five forest edge species (Embothrium coccineum, Escallonia rubra, Gunnera tinctoria, Nertera granadensis and Rhaphithamnus spinosus) presented greater germination success in the canopy gap, while only one forest interior species (Myrceugenia planipes) germinated to a lesser extent in... |

We assessed the energy requirements and the food consumption of the seabird community of the Beagle Channel in summer. We evaluated differences in energy flow among a priori established zones in the study area and among species. We converted data on densities of seabirds in the channel (February and March 1997) into energy demands. Energy flow to seabirds in shallow waters was twice that of in deep waters. Average energy flow in the whole study area was 9.46×10(4) kJ.km-2.day-1. Energy intake rates ranged 4-13×10(4) kJ.km-2.day-1, being higher in zones that include breeding sites or close to them. Imperial Cormorant was the major contributor to energy flow in all the zones followed by the Black-browed Albatross. Kelp Gull was the major contributor in areas... |

Using large and small nest boxes I determined the effect of the nest box size upon nesting and renesting probability, as well as the reproductive success of two secondary cavity nesters, the thorn-tailed rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) and the house wren (Troglodytes aedon) was determined comparing large and small boxes. In order to assess these effects nest boxes were monitored by two consecutive years. Results indicated that Aphrastura nested mainly in the large instead of the small nest boxes, and nesting Troglodytes used primarily small nest boxes. Nevertheless, the renesting pattern of both species, including renesting attempts after successful fledging and after nest failure, was not affected by nest box size and the probability of renesting was not... |

Nothofagus antarctica is a species of the Andean-Patagonian forest with a wide distribution from the north of Neuquén to Tierra del Fuego. Although the N. antarctica forests are of great economic importance for the region, they are intensely affected nowadays by human activities such as grazing, firewood extraction, conversion into pastures and the replacement by coniferous plantations. These activities produce changes in the N. antarctica forest, mainly by the alteration of its original structure affecting the performance of the ecosystem as a whole, resulting in the loss of biodiversity. Since July 2008 up to May 2010 in the northwest of Chubut, Patagonia, we analyzed the effect of disturbances associated with different management strategies on species... |
