Diversity and spatial heterogeneity of mangrove associated sponges of Curaçao and Aruba Naturalis
Hunting, E.R.; Soest, R.W.M. van; Geest, H.G. van der; Vos, A.; Debrot, A.O..
Sponges are major epibionts of mangrove roots in the Caribbean. Mangrove sponge communities in the Caribbean mainly consist of species that are typical to this habitat and community compositions often differ from those found on coral reefs nearby. Heterogeneity in species distributions between locations and within locations between roots is often reported. This study quantifies the diversity and abundance of mangrove associated sponges in the inner bays of Curaçao and Aruba and correlates variability of regional sponge diversity with environmental variables measured along the surveyed sites. Tannin concentrations vary between mangrove roots, and were correlated to sponge cover as a possible cause for habitat heterogeneity on a smaller scale. A total of 22...

Skeletons in confusion: a review of astrophorid sponges with (dicho-)calthrops as structural megascleres (Porifera, Demospongiae, Astrophorida) Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Beglinger, E.J.; Voogd, N.J. de.
We present a review of astrophorid species possessing calthrops megascleres as structural megascleres (including species with dichotriaene modifi cations, but excluding mesotriaene and trichotriaene bearing species). Radiating oxeas characteristic of most astrophorids are lacking in such sponges, but auxiliary oxeas are apparently present in some species. Th ese sponges are currently assigned to two families, Pachastrellidae with four nominal genera Dercitus, Stoeba, Dercitancorina, Halinastra (the latter two generally considered junior synonyms of Stoeba), and Calthropellidae with nominal genera Calthropella, Corticellopsis (usually considered a junior synonym), Pachataxa and Pachastrissa. Our review of many original specimens and extensive new material...

Ueber Rhopilema rhopalophora Haekel Naturalis
Stiasny, G..

A Revision Of The Genus Sarcophyton Lesson (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) Naturalis
Verseveldt, J..
The author refers 35 valid species to the genus Sarcophyton. The holotypes of nearly all species could be examined; of only three species (S. elegans, S. glaucum, and S. latum) their depository is unknown. The holotypes of eight species were described earlier by the present author, in four cases in co-operation with other authors; the reader is referred to the literature given in the list of valid species. Among the species described in the present paper there is a new one: S. buitendijki. A list of invalid taxa is added. Four keys may help with the identification of the corals.

Distribution patterns in Atlantic hydroids Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; López-González, P.J..
The present study is a first attempt to comparing the hydroid faunas of the various Zoogeographie areas of the Atlantic Ocean. We restricted ourselves to species of the orders Antho- and Leptomedusae, of which 1050 species were taken into account. The classification of zoogeographic areas used follows Ekman and Briggs, with slight modifications; thus, the Strait of Gibraltar is here considered as a separate zoogeographic area due to its character of a transition zone between several areas in the Northeastern Atlantic Region. Species were arranged into Zoogeographic groups to compare the faunal composition of the various Zoogeographic areas. The Dice similarity index was used for each comparison. The fauna of North-eastern Region can be split into three...

Brachiopoden Naturalis
Winkler Prins, C.P.; Amler, M.R.W..
A tabular review of the Lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) brachiopods from Germany is given combined with data on their stratigraphic and palaeogeographic distribution. A complete revision proved impossible since too many groups are in need of an extensive reassessment, and many species are poorly known due to their inadequate preservation. Many species are accompanied by comments on their taxonomic status as an explanation of the current state of knowledge.

Phylogeography, genetic diversity and structure of the poecilosclerid sponge Phorbas fictitius at oceanic islands Naturalis
Xavier, J.R.; Soest, R.W.M. van; Breeuwer, J.A.J.; Martins, A.M.F.; Menken, S.B.J..
In this study we assessed the sequence variation in the I3-M11 partition of the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) in ten populations of the Atlanto-Mediterranean demosponge Phorbas fictitius (Porifera: Poecilosclerida) at two spatial scales: a regional scale comparing mainland (Iberian) and insular (Macaronesian) populations, and a local (Archipelagic) scale focusing on different island populations of the Azores archipelago. A multiple approach combining diversity measures, FST estimates, phylogenetic inference and nested clade phylogeographic analysis was used to assess the genetic structure and elucidate the evolutionary history of this species. Genetic differentiation, based of FST estimates, was found among most populations at both scales...

A revision of the genus Sinularia May (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) Naturalis
Verseveldt, J..
In this revision of the genus Sinularia 93 valid species are recorded. The type specimens of 13 species could not be examined, since the depository of the specimens is unknown; nevertheless it is possible to make notes on seven of them in this paper; three were discussed in former papers (S. gyrosa, S. marenzelleri and S. rigida), while the remaining three (S. mayi, S. microspiculata and S. verrucosa) could not be described in this paper. The holotypes of 24 species were described earlier by the present author and the reader is referred to the literature given. The results of the examination of two other species (S. densa and S. larsonae) will appear elsewhere (Records Aust. Mus. Sydney). Altogether 64 species are more or less fully described now; among...

Het zuurtjeskoraal en anderer kleurrijke koralen Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.W..

On two new species of Holectypus Desor from the Senonian of South-Limburg near Maastricht, Netherlands Naturalis
Engel, H..
Up to now the genus Holectypus Desor (1842, p. 52) 1847, (cf. Mortensen, 1948, Monogr. IV 1, p. 26) in its restricted sense (with 4 genital pores) has not been recorded from the Senonian. So the two specimens described below as H. boschmai nov. spec. may have been remaniated and finally deposited in the Senonian of South-Limburg. They then may belong to the Jurassic species H. corallinus d'Orbigny, 1850. Though the preservation of two other specimens of Holectypus from the Limburg Senonian does not permit to decide whether a fifth genital pore is present, it is presumed there was. These two specimens are described as H. macrostomus nov. spec. As said, up to now no Senonian Holectypus is known with 4 genital pores. Holectypus boschmai nov. spec. (pl. XIV)...

Hydroids from the John Murray Expedtion to the Indian Ocean, with revisory notes on Hydrodendron, Abietinella, Cryptolaria and Zygophylax (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) Naturalis
Rees, W.J.; Vervoort, W..
Fourty-four species and one variety of hydroids were identified in the John Murray hydroid collection, obtained from the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the northern part of the Indian Ocean, largely from deep water localities. Of these 44 species 2 could be identified only to genus, 1 species is doubtfully mentioned and 5 are new to science. The 44 species we assigned to 2 families of athecate and 6 families of thecate hydroids. In many instances the species have been compared with the type material which, where necessary, was redescribed. A number of additional species, not represented in the John Murray collection has also been redescribed and/or figured. Practically all the John Murray hydroids are figured. Deposition of spirit-preserved type and...
