On some Portunid crabs from the Indo-westpacific region Naturalis
Leene, J.E.; Buitendijk, A.M..
In 1939 during a visit to the British Museum, London, the first author (Leene) examined a number of indo-westpacific Portunidae belonging to the collection of this Museum. Part of the material was then reserved to be studied more extensively in Holland. Through the outbreak of World War II it was not before 1947 that this material came to Holland; it then was taken from London to Leiden by the second author (Buitendijk). The material was studied jointly by the two authors, who intended to publish the results of this study as a single paper. Circumstances beyond the control of the authors, however, necessitated the separate publication of a report on only three of the species (Leene & Buitendijk, 1949). The present paper deals with the rest of the...

Aponomma komodoense nov. spec. Naturalis
Oudemans, A.C..
Maten. Het afgebeelde individu was er...

The Oribatei (Acari) of the Netherlands Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
INTRODUCTION The study of the Oribatei (moss mites or beetle mites) of the Netherlands was started by Oudemans, who in 1896 published his "List of Dutch Acari, First Part, Oribatei", that was followed in 1900 and 1902 by a first and by a second part of a "New List". After that time Oudemans repeatedly published papers in which Oribatei of the Netherlands were dealt with, although in his later years he paid less attention to this group of Acari. Only a part of the moss mites that Oudemans collected were mentioned by him; a preliminary catalogue of his collection, containing some hitherto unpublished faunistical data on Oribatei, appeared after his death (Buitendijk, 1945). Willmann (1930) published a note on interesting Oribatei in the Oudemans Collection,...

The amphipod genus Acidostoma Naturalis
Dahl, E..
The genus Acidostoma was established by Lilljeborg (1865, p. 24) to receive Anonyx obesus Sp. Bate (1862, p. 74). Afterwards two further species have been added, viz. A. laticorne G. O. Sars (1879, p. 440) and A. nodiferum Stephensen (1923, p. 40). In the present paper it will be shown that A. laticorne as generally understood comprises two superficially similar but clearly distinct species with a widely different geographical range. On the whole the species of Acidostoma appear to be nowhere numerous and practically nothing is known about their ecology. The present writer has had access to a comparatively large number of specimens collected by the Danish Fisheries Research vessels in the North Sea. From these it was possible to draw some further...

The Crustacea Decapoda Macrura (the Alpheidae excepted) of Easter Island Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
So far the Crustacean fauna of Easter Island has received but very little attention. In most early narratives of expeditions visiting the island no mention is made of any Crustacean. Behrens (1908: 135) who accompanied Jacob Roggeveen on the voyage during which, in 1722, the island was discovered, stated in his diary that "No animals were met with, as far as we penetrated on this occasion, except sundry species of birds". Cornelis Bouman, captain of the ship "Tienhoven" of Roggeveen's expedition, did not mention any Crustacean from Easter Island, even though in his narrative he shows a great interest in marine life, as is clearly demonstrated by his account of the expedition's visit to Juan Fernandez (24 February to 17 March 1722) in which he repeatedly...

Studies on Opilioacarida (Arachnida) II. Redescription of Paracarus hexophthalmus (Redikorzev) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
In the first part of the present series (Van der Hammen, 1966), I estimated the extent of my studies on Opilioacarida at two papers, each paper dealing with a representative of one genus. Since the publication of this first part, however, new material has been placed at my disposal, enabling me to start a revision (to be published in several parts) of nearly all species of the group described up to now. Such a revision is interesting because of two reasons. In the first place Opilioacarida are characterized by a very homogeneous habitus which is in remarkable contrast with the considerable variability of many other characters, in such a way demonstrating the further evolution of a type probably fixed at an early date. In the second place, a thorough...

Role of behaviour in biological invasions and species distributions; lessons from interactions between the invasive Gammarus pulex and the native G. duebeni (Crustacea: Amphipoda) Naturalis
Dick, J.T.A..
In attempting to understand the distributions of both introduced species and the native species on which they impact, there is a growing trend to integrate studies of behaviour with more traditional life history/ecological approaches. The question of what mechanisms drive the displacement of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus duebeni by the often introduced G. pulex is presented as a case study. Patterns of displacement are well documented throughout Europe, but the speed and direction of displacement between these species can be varied. From early studies proposing interspecific competition as causal in these patterns, I review research progress to date. I show there has been no evidence for interspecific competition operating, other than the field patterns...

Platypodiella georgei spec. nov. (Brachyura: Xanthidae), a new crab from the island of St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, with notes on the genus Platypodiella Guinot, 1967 Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Türkay, M..
A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data...

The described species of the family Sacculinidae Naturalis
Boschma, H..
I. INTRODUCTION AND KEYS OF GENERA AND SPECIES The present paper contains the data concerning the synonymy and the figures of the Sacculinidae, compiled from the various publications dealing with species of the family, to bring the scattered data together in a general survey. The keys contain all the species that are sufficiently known to be considered distinct ; unfortunately a number of described species could not be incorporated in these keys for want of definite data concerning their structure. The keys are highly artificial, they do not give an idea of the natural subdivisions of the genera, but are only meant to show that the characters of the recognized species allow of an arrangement leading to a ready identification. If these keys are being used...

Note on a Collection of Decapoda Branchyura from the Coasts of Mexico, includung the Description of a new Genus and Species Naturalis
Buitendijk, A.M..
The material of Brachyura on which this paper is based was collected during some years on the Mexican coasts and I am greatly indebted to Dr. F. Bonet of the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biologicas in Mexico, D. F., for the opportunity he offered me to study this interesting material and for his kindness in presenting the larger part of it to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. At Dr. Bonet's request the seven specimens of Platychirograpsus typicus Rathbun were compared with De Man's cotype of Platychirograpsus spectabilis from Gaboon and my best thanks are due to the director and staff of the Zoological Museum in Amsterdam for their kindness in placing this male at my disposal. On examining the Majids of this collection I came across two...

The laophontid genus Loureirophonte Jakobi, 1953 (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) * Naturalis
Fiers, F..
So far, only three species are known in the laophontid genus Loureirophonte Jakobi. In the present contribution five new species are described, and two species formerly attributed to other laophontid genera (Paraiaophonte subterranea Lang and Laophonte cesareae Por), are allocated to Loureirophonte. A redescription of L. cesareae, based on type-material, is included. Relying on the increased understanding of loureirophontid morphology, the diagnoses of L. catharinensis, type-species of the genus, and L. paranaensis are amended. Finally, three species-groups are defined within the genus: the catharinensisgroup, the cesareae-group and the subterranea-group.

A new species of the genus Linuparus White, from the South China Sea (Crustacea Decapoda) Naturalis
Bruce, A.J..
The palinurid genus Linuparus White, 1847, has been represented by a single recent species, Linuparus trigonus (Von Siebold). The trawl survey of the northern shelf region of the South China Sea at present being carried out by the R.V. "Cape St. Mary" of the Fisheries Research Station, Hong Kong, has produced numerous examples of this species. Amongst old collections of Crustacea at the Fisheries Research Station, a single example of a specimen of Linuparus was found early in 1963, which showed numerous differences from the specimens obtained on the trawl survey. This specimen lacked data and was badly damaged, making a full comparison with Linuparus trigonus impossible. In January 1964, a second specimen was obtained which confirmed the constancy of the...

De hooiwagen astrobunus laevipes nieuw voor Nederland (Opiliones: Phalangiidae) Naturalis
Wijnhoven, H..
The harvestman Astrobunus laevipes new for the Netherlands (Opiliones: Phalangiidae) On 19 September 2003 three males and three females of Astrobunus laevipes were collected in Ooij, east of Nijmegen, province of Gelderland. On 25 and 30 September 2003 five more specimens were recorded from the same locality, a grassland with some shrubs and trees, close to the river Waal. Data on morphology, ecology and distribution are given. Original illustrations are presented. It is suggested A. laevipes may well become, or already is, an indigenous species in the Dutch riverine area.

Barriers in the pelagic: population structuring of Calanus helgolandicus and C. euxinus in European waters Naturalis
Yebra, L.; Bonnet, D.; Harris, R.P.; Lindeque, P.K.; Peijnenburg, K.T.C.A..
Molecular studies of marine plankton have shown that ecological and/or environmental barriers play an important role in separating populations. Calanoid copepods are central in marine ecosystems, and dramatic biogeographical shifts in copepod assemblages associated with recent climate warming have been reported. We examined spatial population structuring in European waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea of Calanus helgolandicus and its sister species, C. euxi nus, from the Black Sea based on genetic and morphometric characters. The aims were to identify barriers to dispersal, relate these to hydrographic characteristics and infer historical patterns of distribution and demography. We analysed a 408 bp fragment of the mitochondrial 16S gene...

Late Cretaceous dwarf decapods from Guerrero, southern Mexico and their migration patterns Naturalis
Fraaije, R.H.B.; Vega, F.J.; Bakel, B.W.M. van; Garibay-Romero, L.M..
Two new brachyuran species are described for the Upper Cretaceous Mexcala Formation, Guerrero State, Mexico. Longusorbis quadratus new species (Coniacian, Temalac region) is the oldest and southernmost record for the genus. Xanthosia zoquiapensis new species (Campanian, Zoquiapa region) is the first record for the genus in Mexico. In addition, the age for Costacopluma bishopi Vega and Feldmann is discussed (Coniacian, Temalac region) and represents the oldest and southernmost record for Cretaceous representatives of this genus in North America. All specimens are considerably smaller compared to other species of the same genera and are interpreted as the first example of brachyuran dwarfism in the geological record. These species add new insight into...

[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A re-evaluation of extinct European crabs referred to the genus Calappilia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 (Brachyura, Calappidae) Naturalis
Busulini, A.; Beschin, C.; Tessier, G..
A reassessment of extinct species, fourteen in all, found in Europe and attributed to Calappilia has been carried out. For each species a short diagnosis is provided, and where necessary, its systematic position is reconsidered. Calappilia dacica lyrata is here elevated to species rank, while C. mainii is reassigned to Stenodromia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 and C. sexdentata is considered to be a nomen nudum. Photographs are provided of all type specimens available to us; most of these had so far been known only from (partially inaccurate) line drawings. For the first time, well-preserved chelipeds are described for the genus, having been found in articulation with a carapace of C. dacica.
