Genetic and reproduction strategy in Crassostrea gigas mortality ArchiMer
Moal, Jeanne; Bedier, Edouard; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Yvette; Degremont, Lionel; Boudry, Pierre; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Pouvreau, Stephane; Enriquez-diaz, M.; Lambert, Christophe; Quere, Christele; Soudant, Philippe; Samain, Jean-francois.
Bi-parental families were produced in hatchery and tested in the field in 2001. Two sets of 5 families were constituted, selected on their high (R) and low (S) survival. These two sets were reared in Brittany from March to November 2002. Samplings were performed twice a month to obtain data on biometry, survival, reproductive cycle, biochemical composition, adenylate energy charge, hemolymph parameters (ions and defense system) and muscle strength. "R" and "S" oysters exhibited different reproductive effort and spawning strategy. "R" oysters allocated less energy in gonad than "S" ones and presented a complete spawning at the end of August contrary to the "S" which spawns partially. Mortality started in July when the seawater temperature reached 19 degree...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Mazurie, Joseph.
This study presents the main results of oyster growth obtained experimentally in 2002 and 2003, in the farming area of Cancale before the leases reorganization of 2004. According to the REMORA monitoring network from 1990 to 2004, the oyster growth in Cancale bay may be characterized by an average annual weight gain (around 30g per year), a rather weak meat content compared to other regional oyster sites, and an exceptional quality of shell (absence of blisters, few Poly do rd). Spatially, the oyster farming area of Cancale shows rather homogeneous performances of breeding, in spite of the muddy southern area. In addition an experimental trial in 2003 allowed to evaluate favourably the potential of the new oyster area of Saint-Benoît : in these...

First evaluation of resistance to both a California OsHV-1 variant and a French OsHV-1 microvariant in Pacific oysters ArchiMer
Divilov, Konstantin; Schoolfield, Blaine; Morga, Benjamin; Dégremont, Lionel; Burge, Colleen A.; Mancilla Cortez, Daniel; Friedman, Carolyn S.; Fleener, Gary B.; Dumbauld, Brett R.; Langdon, Chris.
Background Variants of the Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) cause high losses of Pacific oysters globally, including in Tomales Bay, California, USA. A suite of new variants, the OsHV-1 microvariants (μvars), cause very high mortalities of Pacific oysters in major oyster-growing regions outside of the United States. There are currently no known Pacific oysters in the United States that are resistant to OsHV-1 as resistance has yet to be evaluated in these oysters. As part of an effort to begin genetic selection for resistance to OsHV-1, 71 families from the Molluscan Broodstock Program, a US West Coast Pacific oyster breeding program, were screened for survival after exposure to OsHV-1 in Tomales Bay. They were also tested in a quarantine laboratory in...

Enzymatic polymorphism study as help for constitution of initial broodstock for a new cultivated finfish species. ArchiMer
Renno, J; Luquet, P.
Leporinus friderici is a South American promising species for fish culture. In French Guiana the "morphological species", L. friderici, L. granti, L. lebaili and L. affinis steyermarki are found. Their identification is sometimes difficult on usual criterion. To constitute an initial broodstock of L. friderici from local wild populations, the genetic structure of these species was studied. Fifteen enzyme systems, representing twenty loci, were screened.

Contribution à l'étude de la crevette rose Palaemon serratus (Pennant) : Exploitation, Biologie, Elevage, Epidémiologie ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
This these is the result of several years of investigations conducted on the common prawn Palaemon serratus in the Roscoff (northern Brittany) and Yeu (bay of Biscay) sectors of the French Atlantic coast. Following a description of the fishery and fishing strategies, it deals with the species biological aspects, focusing on growth, lifespan, sex-ratio and breeding. Hypotheses on the reasons for apparent variations in interannual abundance are drawn up and compared with field observations. The second part is devoted to production experiments in a controlled environment (hatchery), explaining how larvae are obtained and their development and survival with respect to food, density and physical parameters like salinity and temperature. The link between...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Nedhif, Mohamed; Heral, Maurice.
The complete Manila clam's breeding cycle (Ruditapes philippinarum ) in oysters ponds (claires) permits to obtain a length of 25 mm after 1 year with a density range of 200 animals/m2 . As the primary production is restricted, the breeding biomass during the second year is limited to 500 g.m2 corresponding to a density between 30 to 50 clams..m-2. For an increase of the production it is necessary to extend the cultivated area to the tida1 bottom of the Bay of Marennes-Oleron. It appears that the man tidal level between + 2 and + 2.5 15 necessary with a density range of 200.m-2 to reach, the market size nine months later. The harvest sould be done before winter time to avoid a large 1055 of the flesh which can cause high levels of mortality.

Genetic improvement of fish: Achievements and challenges for tomorrow ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Baroiller, Jean-francois; Haffray, Pierrick; Quillet, Edwige.
Genetic improvement is a major contributing factor in developing efficient aquaculture, as it is in other forms of animal production. Moreover, as most fish species are only slightly domesticated, the potential gains are very large. Many of the current methods, developed during the XXth century, are classically used in livestock rearing (choice of breeds, crossbreeding, selective breeding). Others are much more specific to aquatic organisms (genetic control of sex, sterilization through triploidization). The spread of selected lines in aquaculture has been effective only since the 1990s, with lines selected essentially on growth and producing some impressive results. Transgenesis, although technically feasible on growth rate, is not used in practice and...

Lapegue, Sylvie.
In the framework of the French diploma "Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches", Sylvie Lapègue's synthesis of research includes ten years (1998-2007) of work in bivalve genetics, and mainly cupped and flat oysters. This research has been developed in (1) flat oyster population genetics at the European level and cupped oyster populations and species genetics at a global scale, (2) the characterization of a cytogenetic particularity observed in oysters that corresponds to a high rate of aneuploidy in somatic cells, and (3) more recently in the use of molecular markers for the construction or improvement of genetic maps, allowing (4) the identification of areas of the genome related to the resistance to summer mortality in the Pacific oyster and the...

Morphostructural Differentiation and Variability of Merino Sheep Breed Under Sustained Directional Selection International Journal of Morphology
de la Barra,R; Latorre,E; Martínez,M. E; Calderón,C.
In this paper, the degree of differentiation and morphostructural variability reached by the type of animal resulting from sustained directional selection, in addition to its implications for the emergence of a new sheep breed are analyzed. Twenty-five rams and 200 ewes from a sheep flock submitted to directional selection since 1987 were measured. Thirteen body measurements were taken in other to evaluate the structural morphology and sexual dimorphism. These measurements were compared with identical measures taken in Australian Merino and Marin Magellan Meat Merino sheep breeds. The intrapopulation homogeneity was assessed using the coefficients of variation of the average percentage of body measurements. It is concluded that sustained directional...

Morphological Characteristics and Haematological Studies in Wistar Rats Subjected to Prolonged Treatment of Chloramphenicol International Journal of Morphology
Oyeyemi,Matthew Olugbenga; Adeniji,Deborah Adejoke.
The morphological characteristics and haematological studies were studied in fifteen male albino rats (Wistar Strain) aged between 12 and 14 weeks and with a body weight of 150- 180g. The rats were allowed to feed on commercially prepared rat pellet and provided with fresh water ad libitum. The rats were divided into three groups; the rats were in groups A, B and C of 5 rats each. Group A served as control of the study; Group B was treated with Chloramphenicol at the dose rate of 25mg/kg body weight per os for 20 days; while Group C was treated for 25 days. Semen used in this study was obtained from the caudal epididymides while morphological aberrations were determined from spermatozoa counted after stained with Wells and Awa stain. Results of the...

Morphology Differentiation and Structural Functionality of Ewes Due to Incomplete Crossbreeding International Journal of Morphology
Latorre,E; Uribe,H; Martínez,M. E; Calderón,C; de la Barra,R.
Most Chilean sheep stock comprises different degrees of crossbreeding over Corriedale breed. A common absorbent crossbreeding has been Australian Merino over Corriedale which, in many cases, has not been complete. The aim of this study was to evaluate the process of morphology differentiation and structural functionality of Corriedale ewes undergoing incomplete absorbent crossbreeding which was carried out in order to create an animal with a new morphology. A total of four hundred adult ewes were measured; two hundred belonging to the incomplete crossbreeding, and two hundred from the two original breeds (one hundred Corriedale and one hundred Australian Merino ewes). All measured ewes were randomly selected. Fourteen body measurements were recorded and...

Dawn chorus variation in East-Asian tropical montane forest birds and its ecological and morphological correlates Naturalis
Chen, W.-M.; Lee , Y.-F.; Tsai, C.-F.; Yao, C.-T.; Chen, Y.-H.; Li, S.-H.; Kuo, Y.-M..
Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined. Both foraging height and relative eye size were selected as positively explanatory factors, but no dietary effects...

How does diet influence the reproductive seasonality of tropical freshwater fish?: A case study of a characin in a tropical mountain river Neotropical Ichthyology
Ballesteros,Tania M.; Torres-Mejia,Mauricio; Ramírez-Pinilla,Martha P..
Seasonal breeding of tropical freshwater fish may be synchronized with periods of high food consumption. We explored this hypothesis by studying the relationship between diet and reproductive activity of Creagrutus guanes (Teleostei, Characidae). Our results showed that C. guanes had a generalist and omnivorous diet dominated by aquatic insects (mainly Diptera larvae) and seeds. Creagrutus guanes did not show intersexual or ontogenetic variation in diet. Peaks of feeding activity during rainy months were not synchronized with breeding in dry months. Our results do not support the hypothesis that the reproductive season has to be synchronized with high food consumption. We discussed the hypothesis fat reserves may be an important factor for the...

The present work is about biometry study, population structure and habitat Penaeus vannamei, Boone shrimp cultivated in ponds 939 shrimps were analised from March-July 1991 at a shrimp farm located in Hebano-Manabí port. The analysis demostrated that a strong difference exists between the male and female shrimp product of morphological diformis in this species. Also, the calculated correlation coeficient values were always near the unit indicated for us that the relations between the different averages were very narrow. The proportion of the sexes showed a clear predominance of the females over the males. The proportions being 60%/40% respectively. Aside from this, this population distribution remained steady during the period of the investigation. The...

Ezzeddine-Najaï, S.; Chemmam-Abdelkader, Bachra; Kraiem, M.M..
