A Comparative Analysis of Regional Production Costs of Fed Beef Produced for the U.S. and Japanese Markets AgEcon
Sankey, Lee; Hayes, Dermot J.; Clemens, Roxanne.
This study compared and analyzed actual 1989 production costs for representative regional feedlots in the U.S. The results show that grain-surplus regions have lower total costs and poorer feeding efficiencies. The analysis suggests that Iowa has a comparative advantage in producing heavily marbled beef required by the Japanese market. Southwestern states have an advantage in producing leaner beef and stand to benefit if U.S. consumers develop a taste for Select-quality beef.

The Initial Impact of WTO Membership on China's Trade Performance in Primary Agricultural And Processed Food Products AgEcon
Xue, Liu; Revell, Brian J.; Zetian, Fu.
There has been much analysis of the potential impact of China's membership of the WTO on world trade in agricultural products but few studies of the actual effects thus far on China's trade performance. This paper compares changes in the competitiveness of China's trade in primary agricultural food and processed food products over the period 1998 to 2003 through a range of comparative advantage measures, the preferred being Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage. It also decomposes changes in China's export market share of these products over the period into structural and performance components and identifies where shifts in the global regional distribution of its exports have contributed to changes in its overall market share.

MODIFICATION OF THE CONCEPT OF COMPETITIVENESS WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE DEMAND EMERGING NOWDAYS ON COOPERATION AgEcon
Hurta, Hilda.
What is the activating force that organizes economic affairs? The social side of human nature means that competition alone is not sufficient because competition is the expression of human individuality. Cooperation, which gives expression to human sociality, is the other one. Reality provides many examples indicating that people are more cooperative than is assumed in the standard self-interest model. In the last twenty years the academic view has changed about whether we should compete or cooperate for the higher competitiveness. In the eighties they supported the opinion that the competition is the only way to achieve success in business. Later on the argument started on competition vs. cooperation, and they realized that in some situation the...

Analysis of the Competitiveness of Cereal Production in Selected EU Countries AgEcon
Thorne, Fiona S..
This paper examines the competitiveness of cereal production in selected EU member states, during the period 1996 – 2000. Profitability was selected as a measure of competitive performance and costs of production, value of output and partial productivity indicators were examined as possible sources (potential) of competitive performance. Using data from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) the analysis showed that productivity levels in the UK, Ireland and France were consistently higher then competing countries Denmark, Germany and Italy. In terms of profitability, the opportunity cost of owned resources had a major impact on the competitiveness of cereal production within the EU. Cash costs as a percentage of total output were lowest in Italy but in...

La competitività del comparto florovivaistico delle regioni del mezzogiorno sul mercato internazionale AgEcon
Schimmenti, Emanuele; Asciuto, Antonio; Galati, Antonino; Carapezza, Rosario.
In the last few years the Italian flower and ornamental plant sector has been characterized by a significant dynamicity, becoming one of the most important sectors of the Italian agricultural system. In terms of competitiveness, however, the above sector has faced several market crises due to the globalization process which has produced has brought about an increasing supply of flower and ornamentals in the world market. In a national context, Mezzogiorno is an important area in terms of production source for flowers and ornamental plants, in relation to both extremely favorable climatic conditions and specific economic situations which positively affect profitability of firms operating in some productive sub-sectors (e.g., the ornamental plant sector)....

Competitiveness of Agrarian Areas in the Stavropol Region AgEcon
Varivoda, Valentina; Heijman, Wim J.M.; van Ophem, Johan.
Regional development is determined by possessing specific competitive advantages and their constant improvement. The problem how to increase competitiveness of the areas remains one of the most important for the agrarian sector. Russian economic policy aims at the stable development of the agro industrial complex (and agriculture as its central part). Therefore it is necessary to analyze competitiveness not only on the country level, but also on the regional and sub-regional scale. In this paper we have analyzed the major factors influencing the competitiveness of agricultural areas in the Stavropol region.

Global Competition for the Japanese Fruit Juice Market: A Uniform Substitute Demand Analysis AgEcon
Feleke, Shiferaw T.; Kilmer, Richard L..
This study analyzes the competitiveness of countries exporting fruit juices into Japan through market structure analysis (MSA) within the context of the theory of consumer demand using the relative price version of the Rotterdam model and the block-wise dependent uniform substitute Rotterdam model. The models were estimated for six different types of fruit juices (orange, grapefruit, other citrus, apple, pineapple and grape juices imported from 18 countries) on monthly per capita data over the period December, 1995, to May, 2005, using the non-linear least squares (LSQ) in the Time Series Processor (TSP) program. Results indicate that the market structure underlying the competition for the Japanese fruit juice market is non-uniformly competitive, and most...

Wolter, Michael; Schierholz, Friederike; Lassen, Birthe J..

This study aimed to identify the determinants of the Pará de Minas pork meat chain competitiviness as well as suggest actions to improve it. The chain analysis was based on the Silva e Batalha (1999) methodology, and it was extended by the development of a S.W.O.T. analysis. The main chain strengths were related to the presence of cooperatives and a well developed communication infrastructure. However, its main weaknesses were related to the low level of farmer’s collective production sell, and lack of cooperative culture among farmers. The prejudice of the Brazilian population regarding to the consuption of pork meat was considered the main obstacle against the chain development as well as the environmental laws. However, some important opportunities were...

David, Lorant; Toth, Geza; Kelemen, Nora; Kincses, Aron.
Észak-Magyarország három megyéje közül Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megyé-ben a legjelentősebb a magánszállásadás szerepe, a vendéglátók 50,5%-a találha-tó itt, Hevesben 41,6%-a, miközben Nógrád megyében 7,9%-a. Észak-Magyarország magánszállás férőhelyeinek eloszlása a 2005-ös adatokat vizsgálva területileg meglehetősen egyenlőtlen. A magánszálláshelyeken belül a 2005-ös adatok alapján a falusi szállásadás szálláshelyei 58%-ot tesznek ki, mellyel a régió eltér az országos megoszlástól. A legtöbb mutató vonatkozásában megállapítottuk, hogy a régió megyéinek falusi szállásadással, illetve magánszállásadással rendelkező települései társadalmi-gazdasági fejlettsége, illetve folyamatai sok tekintetben kedvezőtlenebbek az ilyen szállásadással rendelkező települések...

The Rise of Supermarkets and Their Development Implications: International Experience Relevant for India AgEcon
Reardon, Thomas; Gulati, Ashok.
The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) was invited by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry to conduct a study titled “The Impact of Organized Retailing on the Unorganized Retail Sector.” Because organized retail in India is still in its infancy, it was deemed critical to look at the experience of other countries, especially developing ones. Thus, ICRIER sought the assistance of Dr. Thomas Reardon and Dr. Ashok Gulati, co-directors of Markets in Asia, a joint program of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Michigan State University. ICRIER asked Reardon and Gulati to help research and report on the international experiences in the growth and expansion of modern retailing in developed and...

A versenyképesség fogalma és mérési módszerei az agrárgazdaságban AgEcon
Karacsony, Peter.
The examination of competitiveness – thanks to its many definitions and the applied research methods – is a complex task, and this is especially true in the case of agricultural products. The competitiveness of Hungarian agricultural product has to this day been examined by several foreign and Hungarian experts and the results of their examinations have been made public. At the same time very little special literature deals with the different explanations and interpretations of the concept of competitiveness, and the analysis of the suitability of the measurement methods. In my essay I attempt to show the locatable definitions of competitiveness, and to show without aiming for completeness, the measurement methods which are deemed acceptable in special...

Climate Policy and Border Tax Adjustments: Some New Wine Mixed with Old Wine in New Green Bottles? AgEcon
Sheldon, Ian M..
Current policy discussions are making a very clear connection between domestic climate policies and international trade. In this article, the economic, legal and implementation issues relating to border tax adjustments for climate policies are discussed. The overall conclusion drawn is that the connection between trade and the environment is not new, having been discussed in considerable detail since the early 1990s, and reflected in an extensive economics literature. In addition, the legal aspects of border tax adjustments are not particularly new, although only a WTO ruling on their use in the presence of domestic climate policies will resolve any legal uncertainty about their use. However, there are some new issues concerning the determination and...

COMPETITIVIDAD DE LA CADENA ARROCERA DEL ESTADO PORTUGUESA, VENEZUELA, EN LOS PROCESOS DE INTEGRACIÓN EN SUDAMÉRICA AgEcon

The rice chain in the Portuguesa state is of great significance for Venezuela because half of the country's production comes from that state. Activities' integration that goes from production to consumption have some specificities which, in rice producing countries, the most important are those linked to the production and transformation of raw materials. On top, political and economic instability induce to take unwise macroeconomic decisions that affect the monetary system and balance of the country causing clear negative impacts on the rice chain. Several countries from the CAN (Colombia) and MERCOSUR (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) have been selected either as exporters or importers and consequently as potential competitors on the international markets...

COMPETITIVIDADE DA PECUÁRIA DE CORTE DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO VS MATO GROSSO DO SUL E MATO GROSSO AgEcon

Measuring Competitiveness in Twos AgEcon
Cahill, Sean A..
Improvements in competitiveness can be achieved through policy initiatives, but the success of these policies will depend upon the way that firms and consumers respond. This paper establishes the conditions under which a policy change can lead to an improvement in the competitiveness of a Canadian firm. There are two firms (Canadian, U.S.) each with two brands and each making sales in two markets (Canada, U.S.) and two consumers, one in Canada and one in the U.S. Equilibrium is shown to depend on inverse compensated demand function coefficients, the conjectured best response coefficients for each firm and marginal cost functions for each firm. An improvement in competitiveness from an investment in public infrastructure in Canada is shown to depend upon...
