Organic farming systems should be characterized by excellent soil fertility management to keep plant nutrient cycles short and as closed as possible. Therefore, it is extremely important to establish growing systems that have rotations with appropriate crops and intercrops to ensure fertile and biologically active soils, to enhance biodiversity and to provide high quality crop yields. Locally available organic fertilizers include green manures and animal manure. The influence of green manures as intercrops and these combined with composted cattle manure on soil properties, biodiversity indicators and crop yields was studied in a crop rotation experiment in three organic systems at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. |

The impact of cropping system on field communities of mycorrhizal fungi was studied utilising a long-term experiment on a loamy soil. Two contrasting crop rotations each with two fertilisation regimes were compared. The conventional crop rotation (barley-barley-rye-oat-potato-oat) was fertilised at either full or half the normal recommended rate. In the low-input crop rotation, one year with barley was replaced by clover, and oat was cultivated in mixture with pea. For this rotation biotite and raw phosphate was used to compensate for the K and P of the harvested yield; animal manure was used at the beginning only. Clover and straw were returned to the soil either directly or after composting. Mycorrhizal infectivity and effectiveness were studied in... |

Plant soil and atmosphere models are commonly used to predict crop yield and associated environmental consequences. Such models often include complex modelling of water movement, soil organic matter turnover and above ground plant growth. However, the root modelling in these models is often very simple, partly due to a limited access to experimental data. Here we propose a root model developed to describe root growth, root density and nitrogen uptake. The model focuses on annual crops, and attempts to model root growth of different crop species and row crops and its significance for nitrogen uptake from different parts of the soil volume. |

In order to evaluate how different legumes and herbs affects the quality of organic milk a grazing study was performed at the organic research station Rugballegaard with 48 dairy cows. Swards with Lucerne (Medicargo sativa), red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens) and white clover together with chicory (Cichorium intybus), respectively, were established in 2005 together with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in two replicates. The study was carried out in 2006 over three two-weeks periods during the season. Generally, the proportion of legumes and chicory was high in the four species mixtures. Sward composition highly affected grazing behaviour. Sward height measurements indicate that the white clover mixture was eaten without... |

Vegetables with a high nitrogen demand such as cauliflower may cause intensive leaching of nitrate to the environment in conventional as well as in organic production. In organic cropping systems, the use of an in-season living mulch may decrease the risk of nitrate leaching after harvest when left growing in the field to the end of the leaching season in spring. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of growing an in-season living mulch including legumes on the risk of leaching of inorganic nitrogen over winter, and soil nitrogen availability the following spring. Three field experiments were carried out in Slovenia, Germany and Denmark in the frame of the Interveg project (CORE organic II). Evaluation of soil inorganic nitrogen content was... |

A trial was carried out at the institute for agricultural research field Samaru during the 2013 and 2014 rainy seasons to determine the effect of poultry manure and sources of green manure on the productivity of popcorn. Treatments included four poultry manure rates (0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1) and green manure from two cowpea varieties (SAMPEA 6 and Kananado). Green manures were obtained by clipping the cowpea foliage at 5cm from the soil surface and incorporated in 6th week to serve as green manure. Data were collected on shoot dry weight and grain yield and significant increases were recorded. It can therefore be said that good popcorn yields can be obtained by using 2 t ha-1 of poultry manure in addition to green manure from either of the cowpea varieties. |

A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different proportions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rotational level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. It appeared that the buffering effect of clover can... |

Energy crops for biogas production need to be integrated into sustainable and site adapted crop rotation systems, minimising the competition with food production. Luzerne/clover (-grass), sun flower, maize, green-rye + maize and vetch-rye + maize were compared at two sites in Austria with semi-arid (Raasdorf) and humid (Lambach) conditions with and without biogas slurry application. The yield of legumes and fertilised non-legumes at the humid site were 9 % to 56 % higher then at the semi-arid site. The 2-crop system maize following vetch-rye achieved the highest yields at both sites. Slurry from the biogas plant increased the yield only at the humid site. |
