Density of ocelots in a semiarid environment in northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Penido,Gabriel; Astete,Samuel; Furtado,Mariana Malzoni; Jácomo,Anah Tereza de Almeida; Sollmann,Rahel; Torres,Natalia; Silveira,Leandro; Marinho Filho,Jader.
Abstract Ocelots play a key role in ecological communities as mesopredators affecting the lower trophic level and other mesopredators. They show great variability in ecological traits across their distribution, but knowledge of this species is missing in several regions where it occurs. Here, we present the first study of ocelot in the Brazilian semiarid of Caatinga. Arid habitats might keep carnivore population density low and therefore vulnerable to environmental shocks and to human-induced changes, at risk of local extinction. To assess their population status, we used camera traps between September 2009 and January 2010. We estimated the density of ocelots using a spatially explicit capture-recapture method (SECR) to be 3.16 ± 0.46 individuals per 100...

Effects of plant cover on the macrofauna of Spartina marshes in northern Brazil BABT
Braga,Cesar França; Beasley,Colin Robert; Isaac,Victoria Judith.
Data on macrofauna density and diversity, and the height and density of Spartina brasiliensis, were obtained from salt marsh beds of a tropical estuary in northern Brazil. Sampling was carried out at four distinct times of the year, during the wet and dry seasons and in the transition periods between these. Sampling was also carried out in salt marshes of three size classes, small, medium and large. Variables were analyzed in relation to time of year and salt marsh size class. Overall, 46 taxa were found, with polychaetes, isopods and the gastropod Neritina virginea dominating the fauna. Macrofauna density and diversity were positively correlated with culm density, indicating a possible role in protection from predation. All the three variables were higher...

Diel Variations and Ecological Aspects in Fish Assemblages of a Sandy Beach in the Semi-Arid Region of Northeast Brazil. BABT
Dantas,Natália Carla Fernandes Medeiros; Silva Júnior,Carlos Antônio Beserra; Lippi,Daniel Lino; Feitosa,Caroline Vieira.
ABSTRACT For the demersal fish that inhabit sandy beaches, the variation between day and night periods represents a determinant factor in their behavior, especially for species that live in shallow waters. This research aims at determining whether there are differences in the fish assemblage structure of the sandy beach of São Cristóvão, RN, Brazil, between diurnal and nocturnal periods. Samplings were carried out in 2011, during spring high tide period, with an otter trawl net. Dissimilarity between diurnal and nocturnal fish assemblages was confirmed by PERMANOVA results. No statistical differences were observed for richness and diversity of fish assemblage between day and night periods. The first and third order carnivores were the significantly more...

Densidad y diversidad del zooplancton en los ríos Salado y Negro --Planicie del Río Paraná -- Argentina BJB
MARGARITA FRUTOS,SANTA.
Zooplankton abundance and diversity of Salado and Negro rivers were compared in relation to the water level fluctuations. The zooplankton pumper samples were collected between March, 1993 and October, 1994. Mean zooplankton density at Salado river was very higher in upstreem. Zooplankton density in the Negro and Salado rivers were variable in the high water phase. Changes in the density appeared to be related to the hydrologic phases, seasonal cycle and conductivity variation. The zooplankton abundance was positively correlated with the abiotic and biotic factors (temperature, transparency and fitoplankton). The dominant group in the two studied rivers were the rotifers. The dominant species in the high water phase were limnoplanktonic and scarce...

Variation of density, species composition and dominance of Rotifers at a shallow tropical reservoir (Broa reservoir, SP, Brazil) in a short scale time BJB
RODRÍGUEZ,M. P.; MATSUMURA-TUNDISI,T..
Rotifers are the predominant group of zooplankton found in the majority of reservoirs, constituting more than 60% of the total zooplankton present. Being opportunistic organisms, they easily adapt to changes in environmental conditions, and it is therefore difficult to establish a constant level of composition and occurrence of a species in specific areas at specific times. In order to establish how changes in composition and predominance of a species occurs within a dynamic system, the daily variation in the total density of rotifers and that of the dominant species were studied at short intervals during a period of 20 days at Lobo (Broa) reservoir. Filinia pejleri and Keratella americana were the predominant species, making up 64.3% of the total...

Dry matter production and partitioning of maize hybrids and dwarf unes at four plant populations Ciência Rural
Sangoi,Luis; Salvador,Ricardo.
This experiment was conducted in Ames, Iowa, USA, to compare dry matter accumulation patterns of maize genotypes contrasting in height and leafiness, and to test whether reduction in plant height an leaf number through the use of dwarfing genes or earliness can improve grain dry matter allocation. Five plant genotypes were tested: a full season hybrid adapted to central lowa (NK 4525), a short season hybrid adapted to northern Minnesota (C1070), and three dwarf lines (156-A, 302-E and I17- A). The dwarves contained, respectively, the homozygous, independent, recessive dwarfing genes d3, d1 and br2. Each genotype was sown at four plant populations: 25, 50, 75 and 100.000 plants. ha-1. Hybrids had the greatest rates of decrease in total biomass and grain dry...

Growth ring analysis of Euxylophora paraensis through x-ray microdensitometry Ciência Rural
Andrade,Eva Santos de; Garcia,Silvana dos Santos Carvalho; Albernaz,Ana Luisa Kerti Mangabeira; Tomazello Fillho,Mario; Moutinho,Victor Hugo Pereira.
ABSTRACT: Euxylophora paraensis Huber - Rutaceae, popularly known as yellow heart, is a species with a low-density population that has suffered intense exploitation in recent decades. This has led to its inclusion in the IBAMA list of endangered species. This study aimed to evaluate the existence of growth rings and their annuity in five trees of Euxylophora paraensis through the x-ray microdensitometry technique, as well as to compare them using the classical method. Application feasibility of this technique can be deepened through future, broader dendroecological studies, which may better elucidate the understanding of the species population dynamics and promote more sustainable uses. Wood disks were collected from the base of five 29-year-old trees from...

Effects of one haustorium-inducing quinone DMBQ on growth and development of root hemiparasitic plant Monochasma savatieri Ciência Rural
Chen,Lanlan; Zhu,Zaibiao; Guo,Qiaosheng; Guo,Jun; Huang,Zhigang; Shi,Yongtao; Wen,Zhencui.
ABSTRACT: Monochasma savatieri Franch. ex Maxim is a perennial, parasitic herb used in traditional Chinese medicine and its wild resources have decreased sharply in recent years due to destructively harvesting and habitat destruction. Haustorium formation is a key event of parasites, but the concentrations of haustorium-inducing factors vary with species and cultivation conditions. In this study, we investigated the effects of the 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone (DMBQ) concentration and cultivation density on the growth traits, haustorium formation and biomass of M. savatieri in the absence of a host plant. The results showed that both the DMBQ concentration and cultivation density regulated growth traits, haustorium formation and biomass in M. savatieri. The...
