Estrogens and male reproduction: a new concept BJMBR
Carreau,S.; Silandre,D.; Bourguiba,S.; Hamden,K.; Said,L.; Lambard,S.; Galeraud-Denis,I.; Delalande,C..
The mammalian testis serves two main functions: production of spermatozoa and synthesis of steroids; among them estrogens are the end products obtained from the irreversible transformation of androgens by a microsomal enzymatic complex named aromatase. The aromatase is encoded by a single gene (cyp19) in humans which contains 18 exons, 9 of them being translated. In rats, the aromatase activity is mainly located in Sertoli cells of immature rats and then in Leydig cells of adult rats. We have demonstrated that germ cells represent an important source of estrogens: the amount of P450arom transcript is 3-fold higher in pachytene spermatocytes compared to gonocytes or round spermatids; conversely, aromatase activity is more intense in haploid cells. Male germ...

Toxicity of Field-Aged Permethrin-Loaded Attracticides on Choristoneura rosaceana (HARRIS) and Pandemis pyrusana Kearfott (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Adult Males and Females Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Curkovic,Tomislav; Brunner,Jay F; J. Brown,John.
Lethal and sub lethal effects were evaluated in the laboratory on Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) and Pandemis pyrusana Kearfott males exposed to an attracticide loaded with permethrin and aged in the field. The effect of pairing conspecific females with previously intoxicated males was also evaluated. In both species a significantly greater mortality of male moths (≥ 95%) was observed 24 h after exposure to t he attracticide formulation. Likewise, high levels of knock down (≥ 75%) were observed in males of both species 1 h after attracticide exposure. In females, knock down was ≥ 2.5% and mortality ≥ 3.3% after pairing with intoxicated males. Leg autotomy in males was at least 73% in C. rosaceana and ≥...

Virulence and Pre-Lethal Reproductive Effects of Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae on Pseudococcus viburni (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Pereira,Aldo; Casals,Pedro; Salazar,Ana María; Gerding,Marcos.
Obscure mealybug, Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret), is a cosmopolitan pest that causes damage by suction of vascular juices and the production of honeydew, as well as for being a quarantine insect. Within control options, entomopathogenic fungi are a good alternative, nevertheless, more research is needed. In this research, the Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae (Metschnikoff) isolate Qu-M984 was evaluated on P. viburni under laboratory conditions. Virulence was evaluated by lethal dose 50 (LD50) and lethal time 50 (LT50), for each of the four life stages of the female. The doses tested were 10(5), 10(6), 10(7) and 10(8) conidia mL-1. Also fecundity, egg size, fertility, and longevity of adult females were evaluated at doses of 10(5) and 10(6) conidia...

Fertility in the stallion as accessed by the spermatozoa morphology Ciência Rural
Pimentel,Cláudio Alves; Hammes,Anelise Maria; Dietrich,Giovani.
In a breeding farm, 129 mares were bred to 4 stallions and had an overall pregnancy rate of 76.7%. Stailions were submitted to semen examination for at least two times at the beginning of the breeding season and the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa were used for statistical analysis in relation to the percentage of pregnancy at the end of the breeding season. A regression analysis revealed that the percentage of pregnancy (y) can be estimated by the percentage of normal spermatozoa (x) in the ejaculate according to the following equation: y=52.38+0.44x; r2=97.8%; P<0.01. We concluded that the pregnancy rate can be estimated by the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in the ejaculate of stallions, since it is an importam...

Does planting time affect the nutritional demand and yield of potato cultivars? Ciência Rural
Eschemback,Vlandiney; Kawakami,Jackson; Genú,Aline Marques; Almeida,Fabiola Oliveira de.
ABSTRACT: Determining the level of absorption of nutrients in the potato crop at different stages of development is important because it allows identification of the time when the elements are most required by plants. The objective of this research was to evaluate the level of nutrient absorption in cultivars after different planting times. Field experiment was conducted in Guarapuava-PR. Treatments consisted of three cultivars (Agata, BRS Clara, and BRS F63 Camila) and two planting times (October and February), in randomized blocks, with three replications in the crop season 2015/16. The total macro and micronutrient content (leaves, stems, and tubers) was quantified at 15 and 45 days after plant emergence. The total dry weight of plants was verified at...

Consequences of eight consecutive applications of equine chorionic gonadotropin on ovarian follicle development and ovulation in bos indicus cows Ciência Rural
Stuhr,Bhárbara Delboni; Gil,Isaac Santos; Lacerda,Tracy Ferreira; Favoreto,Mauricio Gomes; Loureiro,Bárbara.
ABSTRACT: The equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) is a glycoprotein produced in mare endometrial calices. In bovine, it is used in estrus synchronization protocols. However, studies have shown that it is potentially immunogenic and its effect can decrease after repetitive use. This study aimed to evaluate antral follicle dynamics, corpus luteum (CL) and ovulation rate in bos indicus cows submitted to an estrus synchronization protocol in association with eCG for eight times consecutively. Ten cyclical, multiparous, and pasture raised beef cows were divided into two groups: control group (n=5) and eCG group (n=5). In 30 day interval, all animals were synchronized with the same estrogen/progesterone based protocol, totalizing 8 re-synchronizations. Cows in...
