Australia’s involvement in the organic movement is dated from 1928 in this account. There have been four ‘waves’ of organic advocacy in Australia. The First Wave (1920s & 1930s) follows Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 call at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) for a differentiated agriculture. Australian anthroposophists, beginning with Ernesto Genoni, responded to this call by joining Steiner’s Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC) of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners which was coordinated from Dornach, Switzerland by Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer. Bob Williams presented the first public lecture on biodynamics at the home of Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin at Castlecrag (Sydney) in 1938. The Second Wave of organic agriculture in Australia (1940s &... |

The first half of this chapter theoretically explores, from a development policy perspective, the nature of institutional environments for certified organic agriculture. The aims are to understand the conditions required, and the prospects, for organic agriculture to thrive, to present a view of global initiatives for research on organic production, and the current degree of institutionalization of organic farming and organic research at the global level. Through institutional analysis of social incentive structures, or game rules, the chapter analyses how certified organics in the North has been operationalized into a single policy instrument through which multiple development benefits are pursued, i.e. institutionalized in a way that enables and... |

Ernesto Genoni was Australia's pioneer of biodynamic and organic farming. He was the first Australian member of Rudolf Steiner's Experimental Circle of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners. In the inaugural Uriel Lecture of the Anthroposophical Society of Australia, Dr John Paull reveals Ernesto's training in art at the Brera Academy of Fine Art in Milan, his enlistment in the AIF in Western Australia and WWI service as a stretcher bearer on the Somme, his conscription off the battlefields of the Western Front into the Italian Army and his imprisonment in Italy as a conscientious objector, his training with Dr Rudolf Steiner in Dornach, Switzerland, his introduction of biodynamics to Australia, his grand tour of biodynamic farms in Europe, and his... |

In the last decade, an ever increasing interest of both foreign and domestic academic and general public for organic agriculture can be observed. Organic agriculture, as a new agricultural production system, enables full utilization of farming potentials while satisfying social and economic needs and preserving natural ecosystem and environment. Act on Organic Production of Agricultural Products and Foodstuffs provides an elementary strategic frame for agricultural production development in Republic of Croatia. This article gives an overview of organic agriculture legislation in Croatia and detailed analysis of development periods of organic agriculture. Special emphasis is put on structure of organic production which highlights data on organic plant and... |

This paper analyses the current situation as well as the previous and potential development of the organic sectors in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Concerning domestic productions and consumptions, permanent grassland areas have been most prominent, and consumers prefer fresh products in organic quality. In all countries, a mix of legal, financial and communicative policy instruments is currently being applied to stimulate both the organic markets’ supply and demand side. On the basis of this support, the sector has established and achieved noticeable market shares in Germany and especially in Austria so that these countries highly depend on imports to cover their domestic demand for organic foods nowadays. However, the organic sector’s... |

Tasmania enjoys a reputation as clean and green. It offers an apparent good fit with a vision of organic production as well as some natural advantages. Tasmania’s moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is an advantage for organic production. This paper presents some context for the progress of Tasmania from the puffery of ‘clean and green’ to the standard of organic. Australia leads the world accounting for 45% of the world’s certified organic agricultural land (22.69 m ha of 50.92 m ha.). Tasmania has been an early mover as an advocate of organics with organised advocacy dating from 1946. Despite this enthusiasm, Tasmania only accounts for 0.01% of Australia’s certified organic agricultural land and 4% of Australia’s certified organic... |

As a fast growing state sponsored industry, the organic food sector is likely to attract the increased attention of policy analysts who are interested in industry development. We critically review the European comparative research on growth in the organic sector, focusing on policy analysis. A common element in these accounts is that findings are by no means clear on why variation in organic growth between countries exists. The literature provides a range of possible variables explaining divergent patterns of organic sector development but solid conclusions are elusive. We suggest that future policy orientated research on organic sector apply existing theories on public policy and carefully design studies in accordance with the prescriptions of the... |

Around the early 1970s, there was a foreign publicity manager at a famous French weekly magazine [L’Express] who, in the course of her duties, voyaged all over the world visiting clients. This person happened also to be a friend of the Organic agriculture movement in general and of the French association Nature et Progrès in particular. Her favourite sport was hunting down the pioneers of Organic agriculture who had for decades, usually unknown to each other, been doing original work in their very different countries. Karin Mundt was this intrepid hunter; if any obscure pioneers were anywhere near her flight path, she would track them down. Over several years, contacts were made all over the world. Already in Europe, the necessity was evident, if only to... |

Few agriculture books achieve the status of ‘classic’. F. H. King’s book Farmers of Forty Centuries or Permanent Agriculture in China, Korea and Japan was privately published in Wisconsin, USA, in 1911. The book had an in-auspicious start, and the longevity and acclaim that this book has since achieved must have been, then, barely conceivable. The author was dead, the book was incomplete, and there was no commercial publisher. Yet through a combination of perhaps luck and circumstance the book was ‘resurrected’ in 1927 by a London publisher, Jonathan Cape, who then kept it in print for more than two decades. The London issue of King’s book was favorably cited in the 1930s and 1940s by leading agriculture and organic agriculture writers including: Lord... |
