Live weight and metabolic hormone profile in steers moved in drives R. Bras. Zootec.
D'Oliveira,Marcella Cândia; Souza,Maria Inês Lenz; Ítavo,Camila Celeste Brandão Ferreira; Corrêa Filho,Ruy Alberto Caetano; Morais,Maria da Graça; Negrão,João Alberto; Franco,Gumercindo Loriano.
The objective was to determine the effects of driving on the growth of steers during 55 days of moving by drive and 84 days after the arrival. Twenty-five steers were randomly chosen from a herd of 1,000 Nellore cattle, which were evaluated in two periods: the driving period, in which animals were moved a distance of 700 km on foot for 55 d; and the post-driving period, which lasted 84 d. Serum samples were obtained for hormone dosing (T3, T4, cortisol, and IGF-I) by radioimmunoassay using commercial kits. The data was collected at different time points during the experiment. No changes in live weight were observed between days 0 and 55. During the post-driving period, on the 28th, 56th, and 84th d, the average weights were 226.10 kg, 224.28 kg, and 242.6...

Energetic metabolism in fasting sheep: regularization of metabolic profile by treatment with oral glucose, with prior handling of gastric groove R. Bras. Zootec.
Martín-Alonso,María José; Escalera-Valente,Francisco; Cal-Pereyra,Luis G.; Benech,Alejandro; Alonso,María Pilar; González-Montaña,José Ramiro.
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate a possible corrective measure against negative metabolic states, as occurs in the advanced stage of gestation in ewes, and that sometimes produces a disease called pregnancy toxaemia. In the present research, we found that the joint administration of i.v. lysine-vasopressin (0.08 IU/kg body weight, BW) and an oral glucose solution (50 g) produces an increase in blood glucose, which persists for some time (up to 6 h); therefore, it could be used in the treatment of pregnancy toxaemia. This therapy is based on the fact that lysine-vasopressin induces gastric groove closure in adult ruminants, enabling orally administered glucose to reach the abomasum directly, from where it rapidly passes into the...

Physiological responses of growing pigs to high ambient temperature and/or inflammatory challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Campos,Paulo Henrique Reis Furtado; Le Floc'h,Nathalie; Noblet,Jean; Renaudeau,David.
ABSTRACT Global warming is one of the major environmental threats facing the world in the 21st century. This fact will have a significant impact on pig production due to its direct effects on welfare, health, and performance of pigs. Besides, the effects of high temperatures will presumably become more important over the next decades due to the development of pig production in developing countries mainly located in tropical and subtropical areas, where animals are often exposed to ambient temperatures above their thermal comfort zone. Furthermore, pigs reared in tropical areas are often confronted to sanitary challenges including poor hygiene conditions, lack of respect for sanitary rules, and pathogens. This results in the stimulation of the immune system...

Specific fatty acids as metabolic modulators in the dairy cow R. Bras. Zootec.
Pires,J.A.A.; Grummer,R.R..
This review summarizes recent developments on the utilization of specific fatty acids to modulate bovine energy metabolism, with emphasis on the periparturient dairy cow. A number of experiments have assessed the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids on bovine hepatic energy metabolism using in vitro and in vivo models. Treatment of hepatocytes with specific fatty acids altered energy metabolism in vitro. For example, linolenic acid seemed to decrease hepatocyte triacylglycerol accumulation. This effect was confirmed in vivo, using parenteral infusions of emulsions derived from different fat sources to feed-restricted non-lactating cows. Additionally, polyunsaturated fatty acids can increase whole body response to insulin, potentially enhancing...

New approaches, development, and improvement of methodologies for the assessment of B-vitamin requirements in dairy cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Girard,Christiane L..
ABSTRACT Studies on B-vitamin requirements of cattle, conducted more than 60 years ago, concluded that mature ruminants do not require B-vitamin supplements because the amounts of vitamins provided by the diet and synthesized by the ruminal microflora were sufficient to prevent emergence of deficiency symptoms. As a result, the impact of subclinical deficiency on maintenance of normal and efficient metabolism has been disregarded and very little research effort has been devoted at defining dairy cow requirements for B vitamins. However, emergence of deficiency symptoms is the last stage of the deficiency; deficiency appears as soon as the supply is inferior to the needs, leading to a loss of metabolic efficiency. As B vitamins play critical roles in...

Nutrient reduction in rations with phytase for growing pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Rodrigues,Valéria Vânia; Cantarelli,Vinícius de Souza; Amaral,Nikolas de Oliveira; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Brito,Jeronimo Ávito Gonçalves de; Fialho,Elias Tadeu.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance, the energy and nutrient balance and economic viability of production of growing pigs fed diets with reduced levels and phytase. In experiment 1, 60 barrows and gilts (initial weight 25 ± 1.72 kg) were housed in a randomized block design with three diets, ten replicates and two animals per experimental unit (one male and one female). One of the diets was formulated with a reduced level with phytase and evaluated in comparison to a positive-control diet that was formulated according to the nutritional recommendations for animals of this breed, and a negative-control diet without phytase. The different diets did not affect feed intake, but the diet with phytase promoted better final weight, daily...

Diet-induced developmental plasticity in life histories and energy metabolism in a beetle RChHN
URREJOLA,SERGIO; NESPOLO,ROBERTO; LARDIES,MARCO A.
Adaptive phenotypic plasticity, has been recognized as an important strategy by which organisms maximize fitness in variable environments, which vary through development. A disassociation among stages should represent a null effect of the environment experienced during early ontogeny in the expression of adult traits. Food quality greatly influences survival, development and reproduction in many arthropod herbivores. We examined the effects of diet protein in physiological and life-history traits in the yellow mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor through ontogeny. We established four experimental treatments: Low Protein (LP), Low Protein Control (LPC), High Protein (HP), and High Protein Control (HPC) with recently eclosioned larvae each. Individuals were...

Implications of the use of glycerin on fed of finishing pigs: review Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Corassa, Anderson; Leite, Rafaeli Gonçalves; Silva, Daniela Rocha da; Santos, Tatiane Izabel Silva dos.
Brazilian pig production has been highlighted worldwide, currently the country has occupied the fourth place both in production and export of pork. The the Brazilian governmen has required the addition of 7% biodiesel in fossil diesel, this requirement also increased the amount of glycerin which is a byproduct from production of biodiesel by transesterification. Glycerin has interesting nutritional characteristics for animal feed, and reduce the cost of diets to have energy value similar to corn. For each 90 m3 of biodiesel produced by transesterification of vegetable oils are generated 10 m3 of glycerin. Glycerol is a nutritional component of dietary fat (triglycerides) in the diet can be absorbed as monoglycerides constituent after a partial hydrolysis...

Nascimento,Valkirea Matos; Silva,Luiziana Ferreira; Gomez,José Gregório Cabrera; Fonseca,Gustavo Graciano.
ABSTRACT Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have attracted major industrial interest as alternatives to conventional plastics. They are produced by several bacteria as cytoplasmic inclusions when nutrients are in limited supply. Among the many factors influencing bacterial growth, the effect of temperature on both specific growth rates and growth yields in terms of carbon source intake is of considerable interest. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the bacterium Burkholderia sacchari LFM 101 on growth and PHA production, using glucose, sucrose or glycerol as a carbon source, at 30 and 35 °C. The results showed that B. sacchari cultured with glucose at 35 °C presented both higher productivity and polymer yield in dried cell mass. There were no...
