Silicon and manganese on rice resistance to blast Bragantia
Cacique,Isaías Severino; Domiciano,Gisele Pereira; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila; Vale,Francisco Xavier Ribeiro do.
Blast, caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae, is the most important fungal disease of rice. The effect of silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn), and their interaction, on rice resistance to blast was investigated. Rice plants (cultivar "Metica 1") were grown in hydroponic solution with 0 or 2 mmol L-1 of Si and with 0.5, 2.5, and 10 mmol L-1 of Mn. Sixty-day-old plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension of P. oryzae and the incubation period (IP), the number of lesions (NL) per cm² of leaf area, the lesion size (LS), and blast severity were evaluated. Blast severity was scored at 48, 72, 96, and 144 hours after inoculation and data were used to obtain the area under blast progress curve (AUBPC). Silicon concentration was significantly higher in leaf...

Influence of different levels of aluminum on the development of citrus rootstock swingle citrumelo (Citrus paradisi mcf. x Poncirus trifoliata raf.) in nutrient solution BABT
Santos,Carlos Henrique dos; Grassi Filho,Hélio; Rodrigues,João Domingos; Pinho,Sheila Zambello de.
This work aimed at evaluating the influence of different levels of aluminum on the physiological parameters of the citrus rootstock Swingle Citrumelo in hydroponic solution. The experiment was carried out with a completely randomized design with three replications, subdivided in several lots. The levels of aluminum used were: 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5 and 30 mg L-1 in form of AlCl3.6H2O in nutrient solution. Following physiological parameters were evaluated: specific and relative foliar area, relative foliar mass, and the ratio of aerial part dry matter/root system dry matter. The results showed that aluminum did not influence the parameters evaluated except the specific foliar area, which decreased starting at the 7.5 mg L-1 level.

Strategies to increase zinc deficiency tolerance and homeostasis in plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Henriques,Ariadne Ribeiro; Chalfun-Junior,Antonio; Aarts,Mark.
Zinc deficiency is a global problem of considerable importance for agriculture and human health. Under zinc deficiency conditions, many essential zinc-dependent physiological functions are unable to operate normally, and the cellular homeostasis is adversely affected. This paper described the potential damages that low-zinc bioavailability in soil can have for plants, humans, and animals. In addition, current knowledge on physiological and molecular aspects of zinc homeostasis in plants and strategies used to increase zinc deficiency tolerance were discussed.

Ecophysiology of the cacao tree Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Alex-Alan F. de; Valle,Raúl R..
Cacao, one of the world's most important perennial crops, is almost exclusively explored for chocolate manufacturing. Most cacao varieties belong to three groups: Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario that vary according to morphology, genetic and geographical origins. It is cropped under the shade of forest trees or as a monocrop without shade. Seedlings initially show an orthotropic growth with leaf emission relatively independent of climate. The maturity phase begins with the emission of plagiotropic branches that form the tree crown. At this stage environmental factors exert a large influence on plant development. Growth and development of cacao are highly dependent on temperature, which mainly affects vegetative growth, flowering and fruit development....

Nutritional adaptations of native plants of the cerrado biome in acid soils Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Haridasan,Mundayatan.
Soils of the cerrado biome, mostly oxisols and deep sandy entisols, are acid, dystrophic and poor in available nutrients. These soils are not very different from soils that occur in the Amazon region. However, the open savanna physiognomies of cerrado with lower biomass of their different components are deficient in nutrients at the ecosystem level, unlike the Amazon forests which retain high nutrient reserves in their live biomass. Field crops are susceptible to aluminum and manganese toxicities, besides nutrient deficiencies, in cerrado soils and do not grow well in the absence of liming and fertilization. However, concepts of nutrient deficiencies and toxicities, well established for cultivated plants, should not be extended to native species in natural...

Supplemental Ca2+ does not improve growth but it affects nutrient uptake in NaCl-stressed cowpea plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Guimarães,Francisco Valderez Augusto; Lacerda,Claudivan Feitosa de; Marques,Elton Camelo; Abreu,Carlos Eduardo Braga de; Aquino,Boanerges Freire de; Prisco,José Tarquinio; Gomes-Filho,Enéas.
The growth and nutrient assimilation was evaluated in CaCl2- and CaSO4-supplemented cowpea plants subjected to salt stress (75 mM NaCl). The salinity significantly reduced the cowpea vegetative growth. The addition of CaCl2 in the growth medium did not significantly affect plant growth, while for the CaSO4, the beneficial effects of Ca2+ were moderate. Salinity increased the Na+, K+, Cl-, N and P content in the plants, however it decreased the content of Ca2+ and Mg2+. Increases in Ca2+ concentration in the nutrient solution caused decreases in the Na+ and Mg2+ contents and increases in Ca2+, K+, P, and Cl- contents. The supplemental Ca2+ may alleviate the Na+ toxicity and may improve nutritional and ionic balance in cowpea, but it cannot overcome the...

Effects of early fertilization on the performance of Nothofagus dombeyi planted in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Pablo J; Soto,Daniel P; Schlatter,Juan E; Büchner,Carlos A.
Native Nothofagus dombeyi growth rates excel in secondary forests and in some plantations, and the species has good timber quality. However, few have reported on the effects of fertilization on N. dombeyi plantations. This is a key matter since fertilization has environmental and financial costs, and therefore its use to increase growth and survival for production or restoration must be carefully evaluated. Here we evaluated the early effects of fertilization (control and three levels) using several performance variables (leaf properties, growth, plant quality, and survival) in a N. dombeyi plantation at a low elevation in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile, which has a rainy temperate climate and medium fertility soils. Four years after plantation...

DRIS standard and normal ranges of foliar nutrients for the culture of ‘Thompson’ atemoya Ciência Rural
Santos,Eduardo Maciel Haitzmann dos; Rozane,Danilo Eduardo.
ABSTRACT: Atemoya, an interspecific hybrid belonging to Annonaceae family, is the outcome of a cross between cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.) and Custard apple (Annona squamosa L.). In light of the current shortage of scientific data on the nutritional management techniques for this fruit, the need to develop and apply a specific methodology becomes crucial. From the variety of plant diagnostic tools available, the DRIS method was selected, for use in the commercial cultivation of the ‘Thompson’ cultivar of atemoya located in the São Paulo State, municipalities of Itapetininga, Piedade, Pilar do Sul and Salto de Pirapora. Normal nutrient ranges were determined to interpret the levels of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in the culture through...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus on the initial growth and nutrition of Coffea arabica L. genotypes Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Fonseca,Arley José; Freitas,Ana Flávia de; Carvalho,Gladyston Rodrigues; Carneiro,Marco Aurélio Carbone; Vilela,Diego Júnior Martins; Fassio,Larissa de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT The benefits of mycorrhization occur with the growth of hyphae in colonized roots by promoting an increase of the contact surface which improves the initial growth due to a better absorption of water and nutrients. The objective was to evaluate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus clarus inoculation over the initial development and nutritional response of six genotypes of Coffea arabica L. Six genotypes of Coffea arabica L. were used (MGS Aranas, H29-1-8-5, Red Catuai IAC 144, IPR 100, Catigua MG2, Paraíso H 419-1) and with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus - AMF: Rhizophagus clarus and without the application of the fungus. For the production of coffee seedlings, seeds were placed to germinate in plastic trays with sterile sand....

Sunflower micronutrient uptake curves Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Zobiole,Luiz Henrique Saes; Castro,César de; Oliveira,Fábio Alvares de; Oliveira Júnior,Adilson de; Moreira,Adônis.
Most studies in the literature regarding the uptake of micronutrients [zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and boron (B) accumulation] by sunflower are old. For this reason, this work is aimed to establish curves of sunflower micronutrient accumulation in tropical edaphoclimatic conditions. The experiment was conducted in field on Rhodic Eutrudox, located at the experimental farm of Embrapa Soja in Londrina-PR, using the commercial hybrid BRS 191. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates. The experimental units consisted of 14 lines with a spacing of 0.70 meter between lines and 25.0 meters in length, with final density of 42,858 plants per hectare. Plants samples were collected every 14 days after emergence....

Nutrient and inorganic solute (Na+ and Cl-) content in green onion plants under hydroponic cultivation using brackish water Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Souza,Carlos Donato da Silva; Silva,Geronimo Ferreira da; Menezes,Sirleide Maria de; Morais,José Edson Florentino de; Santos Júnior,José Amilton; Silva,Alexsandro Oliveira da.
ABSTRACT Cultivation using brackish waters can result in nutritional and metabolic imbalances in several plant species, consequently reducing the production of dry matter (DM) and accumulation of toxic ions (Na+ and/or Cl-) in plants. We evaluated the DM production, and nutrient and inorganic solute (Na+ and Cl-) content in green onion plants (cv. Todo Ano Evergreen - Nebuka) under different levels of nutrient solution salinity in combination with circulation frequencies of this solution. Two experiments were conducted in a hydroponic system, using a completely randomized design, in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with five replicates: six levels of nutrient solution salinity (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5, and 9.0 dS m-1) and two solution circulation frequencies...

Drought-induced alterations in the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and the relation with drought tolerance in sugar cane Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Thais Ramos da; Cazetta,Jairo Osvaldo; Carlin,Samira Domingues; Telles,Bruna Robiati.
ABSTRACT Although there are evidences that the proper supply of mineral nutrients to plants relieves water stress, little is known on the approach of how the drought affects the absorption and accumulation of nutrients by distinct sugar cane genotypes, or in different parts of a same plant. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the content and accumulation of N, P and K in the aerial part of plant from three genotypes of sugar cane, submitted to three water potentials in the soil, and check the relationship of these variables with the tolerance of plants to prolonged drought. In order to access this objective, an experiment under greenhouse conditions, comprised by a fatorial 3 × 3, in a randomized block design, and four replicates was carried...

Roles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on acclimatization of clones of Coffea arabica L. produced by somatic embryogenesis Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Fonseca,Arley José; Tassone,Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Carneiro,Marco Aurélio Carbone; Carvalho,Gladyston Rodrigues; Carvalho,Carlos Henrique Siqueira; Botelho,Cesar Elias.
ABSTRACT The production of Coffea arabica L. clone seedlings through the somatic embryogenesis technique is one of the alternatives of greatest demand for coffee producers. However, clones can face difficulties related to acclimatization carried out under greenhouse conditions, which can increase the production costs. A tested alternative with promising results is inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) during the seedling acclimatization process. Thus, this study aimed to promote the improvement of the seedling production process through somatic embryogenesis associated with inoculation with AMF. For the production of the clones, seedlings were used in the phase when they presented four pairs of leaves (Clone 1 “Fruiting red Catucaí” and Clone...

Alternative potassium source for the cultivation of ornamental sunflower Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Torqueti,Sabrina Thereza dos Santos; Boldrin,Karina Volpi Furtini; Nascimento,Ângela Maria Pereira do; Paiva,Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Furtini Neto,Antônio Eduardo; Luz,Iracema Clara Alves.
ABSTRACT Brazil is dependent on importation of fertilizers, especially the potassics. Rocks and minerals that contain nutrients have a potential for use in agriculture as fertilizer, especially those of slow solubilization and that exhibit residual effect. In this context, the objective was to assess the feasibility of glauconite rock as potassium source for the cultivation of ornamental sunflower. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions arranged in an entirely randomized design, in a 4x4 + 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates and one plant per plot. Four glauconite-based fertilizers were used as a potassium source: fine grained glauconite, fine grained organo-mineral glauconite, coarse grained glauconite and coarse grained...

Effects of cytokinins on in vitro mineral accumulation and bud development in Annona glabra L. Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Lenaldo Muniz de; Paiva,Renato; Santana,José Raniere Ferreira de; Pereira,Flávia Dionísio; Nogueira,Raírys Cravo; Silva,Luciano Coutinho.
Annona glabra is a tropical species that has significant agronomic potential in terms of furnishing fruits for in natura consumption and for the production of phyto-pharmaceuticals. In vitro cultivation has been considered the most promising form of propagation for this species, although large scale utilization of this technique is currently limited by high rates of leaf abscission, reduced rates of explant multiplication and slow bud growth. The present work evaluated the effects of different cytokinins on mineral accumulation in shoots of A. glabra cultivated in vitro, and their effects on growth and survival of these plants. Buds of A. glabra were cultivated in Wood Plant Medium (WPM) in the presence of 6-benzilaminopurine (BAP), thidiazuron (TDZ),...
