Production and body composition traits of broilers in relation to breast weight evaluated by path analysis Scientia Agricola
Lorentz,Leandro Homrich; Gaya,Leila de Genova; Lunedo,Raquel; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Rezende,Fernanda Marcondes de; Michelan Filho,Tércio.
Breast weight has great economic importance in poultry industry, and may be associated with other variables. This work aimed to estimate phenotypic correlations between performance (live body weight at 7 and 28 days, and at slaughter, and depth of the breast muscle measured by ultrasonography), carcass (eviscerated body weight and leg weight) and body composition (heart, liver and abdominal fat weight) traits in a broiler line, and quantify the direct and indirect influence of these traits on breast weight. Path analysis was used by expanding the matrix of partial correlation in coefficients which give the direct influence of one trait on another, regardless the effect of the other traits. The simultaneous maintenance of live body weight at slaughter and...

Biodiversity and distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in Araucaria angustifolia forest Scientia Agricola
Moreira,Milene; Baretta,Dilmar; Tsai,Siu Mui; Gomes-da-Costa,Sandra Maria; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. is an endangered Brazilian coniferous tree that has been almost exterminated in the native areas because of uncontrolled wood exploitation. This tree has been shown to be highly dependent on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and, therefore, AMF may be essential for forest sustainability and biological diversity. Root colonization, density and diversity of AMF spores were assessed in two Araucaria forest stands at the State Park of Alto Ribeira (PETAR), at two sampling dates: May and October. A comparison was made between a mature native stand composed of Araucaria trees mixed into a variety of tropical trees and shrubs, without any sign of anthropogenic interference (FN) and an Araucaria stand planted in 1987 (R),...

Soil mesofauna in consolidated land use systems: how management affects soil and litter invertebrates Scientia Agricola
Zagatto,Maurício Rumenos Guidetti; Zanão Júnior,Luiz Antônio; Pereira,Arthur Prudêncio de Araújo; Estrada-Bonilla,German; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
ABSTRACT: Soil mesofauna consists of small invertebrates that live in the soil or litter and are sensitive to climatic conditions, management systems, plant cover and physical or chemical soil attributes. These organisms are active in the cycling of nutrients, since they fragment the organic matter hereby accelerating microbial decomposition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the invertebrate community in no-tillage, conventional tillage, minimum tillage and secondary forest in regeneration to determine the relationship of mesofauna to litter, soil attributes, management and seasonality. Therefore, ten soil samples in each system and eight litter samples in no-tillage and the forest were taken over four seasons. These samples remained in Berlese...

Genetic diversity of table grape based on morphoagronomic traits Scientia Agricola
Leão,Patrícia Coelho de Souza; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Motoike,Sérgio Yoshimitsu.
The conservation and characterization of grape (Vitis spp) genetic resources in germplasm banks have been the basis of its use in breeding programs that result in development of new cultivars. There are at least 10,000 grape cultivars kept in germplasm collection. The genetic diversity in 136 table grape accessions from the state of Bahia, Brazil, was evaluated. Continuous and discrete morphoagronomic traits were assessed. The clustering analysis by the Tocher otimization method resulted in 30 clusters (considering continuous morphoagronomic traits), and 9 clusters (taking into consideration multicategorical traits). There was no agreement between clusters obtained by both, continuous or discrete phenotypic descriptors, independent of the cluster method...

AMMI analysis to evaluate the adaptability and phenotypic stability of sugarcane genotypes Scientia Agricola
Silveira,Luís Cláudio Inácio da; Kist,Volmir; Paula,Thiago Otávio Mendes de; Barbosa,Márcio Henrique Pereira; Peternelli,Luiz Alexandre; Daros,Edelclaiton.
Sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) is one of the most important crops in Brazil. The high demand for sugarcane-derived products has stimulated the expansion of sugarcane cultivation in recent years, exploring different environments. The adaptability and the phenotypic stability of sugarcane genotypes in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil, were evaluated based on the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) method. We evaluated 15 genotypes (13 clones and two checks: RB867515 and RB72454) in nine environments. The average of two cuttings for the variable tons of pol per hectare (TPH) measure was used to discriminate genotypes. Besides the check RB867515 (20.44 t ha-1), the genotype RB987935 showed a high average TPH (20.71 t ha-1), general...

Clustering of ingredients with amino acid composition similar to the nutritional requirement of Nile tilapia Scientia Agricola
Bicudo,Álvaro José de Almeida; Pinto,Luis Fernando Batista; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The search for balanced diets, which may elicit improved growth of fish, requires appropriate selection of available protein sources. This study aims at clustering feedstuffs according to amino acid profile, determining which ones show essential amino acids (EAA) profiles closer to the ideal dietary amino acids requirements of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and studying the relationship among amino acids feedstuffs groups. Tabled data on EAA more cystine and tyrosine, in relation to lysine contents, of 40 feedstuffs ordinarily used to formulate fish diets were studied. Feedstuffs were grouped according to amino acids profile by cluster analysis of Euclidean distances. The principal components analysis was used to determine the relationship among...

A morphometric analysis of Eunice Cuvier (Annelida, Polychaeta) species Zoologia
Costa-Paiva,Elisa M.; Paiva,Paulo C..
Morphology has been the subject of several studies in Eunice specially in the context of the taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of taxa within this genus. In this study we opt for a morphometric approach comparing five species of Eunice to assess if it was possible to delimitate them by shape variables. The morphology of E.fucata, E.insularis, E. cf. ornata, E.rubra, and Eunice sp. was compared using traditional morphometric analysis of 16 measured variables. After removing the size-effect, a Canonical Variates Analysis applied to morphometric variables was able to discriminate all species. In CV1 two major groups of species were discriminated: E.fucata/E.insularis and E. cf. ornata/E.rubra/Eunice sp. CV2 strongly discriminated all species, with E....

Strategies of the small-scale fisheries on the Central Amazon floodplain Acta Amazonica
FREITAS,Carlos Edwar de Carvalho; BATISTA,Vandick da Silva; INHAMUNS,Antonio José.
A multivariate approach was applied to data of small-scale fisheries developed in Central Amazon, using information about catch composition, environment, fishing gear and season of the hydrological cycle. The correspondence analysis demonstrated to be a good tool for the analysis related multispecies fisheries. The analysis identified patterns of use of fisheries resources by the riverine communities, showing the correlation between the environmental factors and the fishing strategy for the capture of target fish species, indicating the high level of empiric knowledge about the environment and fisheries.

Myrtaceae throughout the Espinhaço Mountain Range of centraleastern Brazil: floristic relationships and geoclimatic controls Acta Botanica
Bünger,Mariana de Oliveira; Stehmann,João Renato; Oliveira-Filho,Ary Teixeira.
Although biological surveys and taxonomic revisions provide key information to ecological and evolutionary studies, there is a clear lack of floristic and phytogeographic studies of the mountainous regions of Brazil, which harbor some of the most threatened plant ecosystems on the planet. Myrtaceae has been reported to be one of the most important families in the upland areas of Brazil, as well as in the Atlantic Forest Domain. In this study, we investigated the floristic composition of Myrtaceae throughout the Espinhaço Mountain Range and adjacent highlands of central-eastern Brazil, testing the following hypotheses: floristic similarity increases with geographic proximity; and species distribution is affected by geoclimatic variables. We performed...

Spore diversity among species of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Silva,Dilma Melo da; Sylvestre,Lana da Silva; Mendonça,Cláudia Barbieri Ferreira; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vania.
ABSTRACT The palynological diversity of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest was investigated. While the monophyletic family belongs to the group of leptosporangiate ferns, a new classification proposed by recent phylogenetic study reorganizes the family and adds new genera. To expand palynological knowledge of the group, the spore morphology of 23 species and a hybrid, distributed among 10 genera, was described. Material from herbarium collections were submitted to acetolysis and mounted on slides, with subsequent statistical analysis of spore measurements. Photomicrographs of the material were taken under both light and scanning electron microscopy. Perine ornamentation varied among psilate, rugulate and scabrate; granules and gemmae were present along...
