Land Use, Production Growth, and the Institutional Environment of Smallholders: Evidence from Burkinabe Cotton Farmers AgEcon
Kaminski, Jonathan; Thomas, Alban.
The cotton boom in Burkina Faso consisted of a growth in cotton land shares together with an overall increase in total cultivated land. This paper examines the impact of institutional changes in the cotton sector on the evolution of smallholders’ land-use decisions. The empirical analysis is supported by a structural model that takes into account the specific institutional features of the Burkinabè cotton sector and builds upon household level data collected in rural Burkina Faso. We attribute most of the change in land use to the newly established institutional arrangements between producers and stakeholders, mechanization, and slackening of the food security constraint.

Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in the EU: A spatial assessment of sources and abatement costs AgEcon
de Cara, Stephane; Houze, Martin; Jayet, Pierre-Alain.
Agriculture contributes significantly to the emissions of greenhouse gases in the EU. By using a farm-type, linear-programming based model of the European agricultural supply, we first assess the initial levels of methane and nitrous oxide emissions at the regional level in the EU. For a range of CO2 prices, we assess the potential abatement that can be achieved through an IPCC-based emission tax in EU agriculture, as well as the resulting optimal mix of emission sources in the total abatement. Further, we show that the spatial variability of the abatement actually achieved at a given carbon price is large, indicating that abatement cost heterogeneity is a fundamental feature in the design of a mitigation policy. We assess the efficiency loss associated...

Dimensions of Wealth Dispersion Among Farm Operator Households: An Assessment of the Impact of Farm Subsidies AgEcon
El-Osta, Hisham S.; Mishra, Ashok K..
This paper uses microlevel data from the Agricultural Resource Management Survey to examine the changes in the distributions of household wealth and to assess the role farm subsidies play, among other factors, in affecting these distributions. The empirical analysis relies on the concept of the adjusted Gini coefficient and on fixed-effect regression procedures. Coefficients from fixed-effect estimation indicate a negative correlation between government payments and wealth dispersion, with the effect shifting toward more of a positive relation when government payments were allowed to interact with regional dummies.

Perception of Land Scarcity by Peri-Urban Farmers AgEcon
Vandermeulen, Valerie; Verspecht, Ann; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Farmers in peri-urban regions face many problems, among which land scarcity is a major one according to literature. However, as indicated by a survey among farmers in the peri-urban region around Brussels, land scarcity is not perceived as a problem by all farmers to the same extent. Based on econometric analysis, the survey results show that perception of land scarcity is mainly influenced by differences in landownership and perceived ratio between farm land prices and real land prices. Changes in each of these variables will lead to a shift in the problems a farmer faces and will therefore stimulate different farming or land use strategies.

The relationship between farm size and productivity: empirical evidence from the Nepalese mid-hills AgEcon
Thapa, Sridhar.
This paper examines the farm size and productivity relationship using data from Nepalese mid hills. The household data used has been drawn from a survey conducted by the author and financed by the Norwegian University of Life Science. The analysis uses models both allowing for and not allowing for village dummies(as cluster controls), the ratio of irrigated land (as proxy for land quality), and other socio-economic variables such as households, belonging to caste groups, and family size (as proxy for access to resources). The result supported the almost ‘stylized fact’ of inverse relationship (IR) between farm size and output per hectare. Total cash input use and labour hours per hectare were found to be higher on small farms. The findings of...

IMPACT OF THE INTRODUCTION OF DECOUPLED PAYMENTS ON FUNCTIONING OF THE GERMAN LAND MARKET. COUNTRY REPORT OF THE EU TENDER: "STUDY ON THE FUNCTIONING OF LAND MARKETS IN THOSE EU MEMBER STATES INFLUENCED BY MEASURES APPLIED UNDER THE COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY" AgEcon
Henter, Sybille Henriette; Kellermann, Konrad; Moller, Lioudmila; Roder, Norbert; Sahrbacher, Christoph; Zirnbauer, Martin.
Against the background of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2003 the following analysis, brings into focus the responses of the agricultural sector to decoupled subsidies. In particular it addresses the impact of the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) on land sales and rent prices and therefore on farm structure. It also aims to assess the extent to which the reform advances sound and sustainable agriculture and provides incentives for market-orientated farming practices. The study is based on the analysis of statistical data and expert surveys conducted in three selected regions.

Land Reallocation and Its Impacts on Technical Efficiency --Evidence from China’s Agricultural Production AgEcon
Zhang, Yanjie; Wang, Xiaobing.
China’s economic reforms make the farmers face the risk of land reallocation and adjustment, raising the questions about the impact of land reallocation on farm productivity and efficiency. Deep understanding what determines land reallocation, whether and to what extent farm productivity and efficiency are affected by the frequency of land reallocation could help policy makers introduce better targeted rural development policies. The aim of this study is first to explore the determinants of land reallocation, and then analyze how land reallocation influences productivity and efficiency in agricultural production. This study is based on panel data set over 1995-2002 from rural households in Hubei and Yunnan provinces. Our results indicate that the...

Precio de la tierra con presión urbana: un modelo para España AgEcon
Decimavilla, Esther; San Juan, Carlos; Sperlich, Stefan.

Productivity and Efficiency of Corporate and Individual Farms in Ukraine AgEcon
Lerman, Zvi; Sedik, David J..
The paper presents a comparative analysis of the productivity of corporate and individual farms in Ukraine based primarily on cross-section data from a farm survey conducted by FAO in 2005. We calculate partial land and labor productivity, total factor productivity, and technical efficiency scores (using Stochastic Frontier Analysis) for farms of different organizational forms. Our results demonstrate with considerable confidence that, contrary to established convictions among the Ukrainian decision makers, the large corporate farms are not more productive than the smaller family farms. This finding is not restricted to Ukraine, as a similar result has been obtained by in Moldova, Russia, and the U.S. Policies encouraging a shift from large corporate farms...

Performance of Crop Insurance Scheme in Udaipur District of Rajasthan AgEcon
Rathore, Vikram Singh; Burark, S.S.; Jain, H.K..
farms in Salumber tehsil of Udaipur district during 2008-09. The study has revealed that farm income per family is higher on beneficiary farms as compared to non-beneficiary farms. The progress of crop insurance scheme in Rajasthan has been found positive, as is evidenced through compound and linear growth rates. In the Udaipur district, the progress of crop insurance scheme has been found positive, except the claim passed to the number of farmers and amount of sum insured. At the overall level, the total area insured under the crop insurance programme has been only about 45 per cent of the total cropped area of the beneficiary farms. Use of inputs such as human and bullock labour, seed, manures, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. has been found significantly...

The Motivation for Organic Grain Farming in the United States: Profits, Lifestyle, or the Environment? AgEcon
Peterson, Hikaru Hanawa; Barkley, Andrew P.; Chacon-Cascante, Adriana; Kastens, Terry L..
The objective of this research is to identify and quantify the motivations for organic grain farming in the United States. Survey data of US organic grain producers were used in regression models to find the statistical determinants of three motivations for organic grain production, including profit maximization, environmental stewardship, and an organic lifestyle. Results provide evidence that many organic grain producers had more than a single motivation and that younger farmers are more likely to be motivated by environmental and lifestyle goals than older farmers. Organic grain producers exhibited a diversity of motivations, including profit and stewardship.

Determinants of Timberland Use by Ownership and Forest Type in Alabama and Georgia AgEcon
Nagubadi, Rao V.; Zhang, Daowei.
Land use changes and timberland use by ownership and forest type in Alabama and Georgia between 1972 and 2000 are analyzed using a modified multinomial logit approach. Low average land quality, federal cost-share incentives, and favorable returns to forestry relative to agriculture were the main factors associated with timberland increase. Higher forestry returns helped increase industrial timberland but not nonindustrial private forests. An increase in hardwood forests at the expense of softwood and mixed forests was driven by increasing hardwood returns. Increasing softwood returns and tree planting assistance programs alleviated declines in softwood forests. Because factors influencing timberland use changes differ by ownership and forest type,...

Water use efficiency and maximizing profitability of grain sorghum production in the Texas Panhandle AgEcon
Ahamadou, Aly; Dembele, Mamadou; Almas, Lal K.; Brooks, Kathleen R..
The reduction in the availability of irrigation water and the increase in pumping costs resulting from the decline in the Ogallala Aquifer make good management decisions more critical for the survival of the farm firm and the success of the agricultural sector in the Texas Panhandle. Response functions for irrigation and percentage potential evapotranspiration (PET) in the production of grain sorghum are estimated. The response functions are transferred into value product functions and combined with an irrigation energy cost function to determine the profit maximizing irrigation strategy. Three management decision variables; total water available, the level of irrigation and the water to meet crop ET requirements are evaluated. Grain sorghum yield,...

Land Distributional and Income Effects of the Chinese Land Rental Market AgEcon
Wu, Ziping.
Using panel data of 450 farm households for the period of 1996-2001 in Zhejiang, China, we measured land distributional effect and income effect of the land rental market. It is found that the rental market had contributed for a less equal land distribution among the households, and for the concentration of land to households with higher efficiency. With a land rental market in a dynamic economic development process, improvements in overall production efficiency of the households, however, mainly come from the reduction of land abandonment and the contribution from land changing hands is very limited.

Consumers’ Willingness-to-Pay for Retail Branded Beef Products with Bundled Attributes AgEcon
Franken, Jason R.V.; Parcell, Joseph L.; Tonsor, Glynn T..
With a declining share of the domestic meat market, some beef producers are becoming more attentive to opportunities for value-added products tailored to the desires of certain consumer segments. Using a survey of St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri meat consumers, this study investigates perceptions of and willingness-to-pay for various value-added attributes that could be supplied as retail branded beef products. Factor analysis identifies two alternative attribute bundles as branding strategies based on perceived importance and complementarity of attributes. Nonparametric procedures provide conservative estimates of willingness-to-pay. Parametric methods identify types of consumers willing to pay significantly higher premiums.

LAND REFORM IN MOLDOVA: HOW VIABLE ARE EMERGING PEASANT FARMS? AN ASSESSMENT REFERRING TO A RECENT WORLD BANK STUDY AgEcon
Petrick, Martin.
Based on a case study of two Moldovan regions, the paper challenges the favourable assessment of recently established peasant farms in a World Bank study by LERMAN et al. (1998). The main arguments in favour of a more critical view of the results of land privatisation and farm restructuring are that a) private farmers produce only on a minimal fraction of land with almost no machinery or purchased inputs at all, b) the income of a typical farm household is below a poverty line based on national standards, c) private farmers face substantial production and marketing risks, d) at present, it is unlikely that short- or long-term investment projects in agriculture can be credit funded. Currently, peasant farms are mainly run to produce a minimum diet for the...

Agricultura familiar e programas de desenvolvimento rural no Alto Jequitinhonha AgEcon
Ribeiro, Eduardo Magalhaes; Galizoni, Flavia Maria; Silvestre, Luiz Henrique Aparecido; Calixto, Juliana Sena; Assis, Thiago Rodrigo de Paula; Ayres, Eduardo Barbosa.
The agrarian conditions and the low relative levels of the socioeconomic indicators cause the area of the “High Jequitinhonha Valley”, in the northeast of the State of Minas Gerais, to be considered one of the most complex areas of Brazil. For this reason several governanmental administrations have recommended rural development programs. Most of these efforts, however, have not produced adequate results. This article analyzes the relationships between public programs and family farming, making a survey of the methods and results of the last three decades. It concludes that there is a need to incorporate the specificities of history, environment and culture into the rural programs. It is suggested that the programs take into consideration the experience...
