Suppose that the production, y = f (x1, x2,..., xs ) , is known. It says that we are able to know for each value of the input vector, 1 2 , ,..., s x x x , the correspondent value of y. Or yet production growth occurs as consequence of movement along the production frontier, and it requires a different combination of inputs, and consequently, a higher or a smaller expenditure. Another representation of the production structure is, 1 2 ( , ,..., , ) s y = f x x x t , where t is non negative real number. Now each set of 1 2 , ,..., s x x x gives a different y as t varies. Or, it is possible to achieve a higher level of production with no additional cost. A question comes to mind: can the real world (or the data) say which one of the two representations has a... |

Growing concerns about the dependence on foreign oil and high prices of gasoline have led to rapid growth in ethanol production in the past decade. Unlike earlier development of the ethanol industry which was highly concentrated in a few large corporations, recent ownership of the ethanol plants has been by farmer-owned cooperatives. Not much is known about the marketing and purchasing practices and plants’ flexibility with respect to adapting new technologies. The purpose of this research is to fill the gap in knowledge on these practices and to test whether the practices differ with the size and type of ownership. |

The purpose of this research is to know the meaning, which the diverse social groups attribute to a new technology, with the assumption that for the group that work planting, the seeding device represents the accomplishment of their work with greater rapidity and exactitude, whereas for the owner it represents savings in the production process. In order to attain this goal one begins with a concept of technology, which is understood as the application of the scientific method to the procedures of manufacture and development of administrative processes in companies. In addition, one considers that the technological innovation is the creative activity that is set to create wealth and social welfare through technology. Whereas social construction of... |

A vizsgált juhászatok a hazai átlagtól eltérő fajtaösszetételűek és nagyobb nyájméretűek, de a nagyobb állományokhoz korszerűtlen technológia társul, ami korlátozza a potenciális hozamok elérését. A költségek szerkezetéből kitűnik, hogy a takarmányköltségek mellett a személyi jellegű költségek aránya igen magas a vizsgált gazdaságok állománykoncentrációja ellenére is, ami utal az évtizedek óta elavult tartástechnológiára is. A fajtacsoportonkénti bevételekben szembetűnő a tejelő juhászatok kimagasló teljesítménye, míg a húshasznú és keresztezett fajtáknál ez alig haladja meg a merinó fajtacsoportét. A méretcsoportok szerinti árbevétel a 300–600 anyajuh/nyáj méretű gazdaságokban jelentősen meghaladja a kisebb és nagyobb méretkategóriába tartozó juhászatok... |

ERS sponsored a workshop, Technological and Structural Change in the Transportation Sector: Effects on U.S. Food and Agricultural Trade, March 17-18, 1999, in Washington, DC. The program's objectives were to raise awareness within ERS about the role and importance of transportation in U.S. food and agricultural trade and to discuss the need of an agency research agenda in this area. More than 60 people attended. Bob Thompson of the World Bank and Jeffrey Frankel of the Brookings Institution led with discussions about the role of transportation in the global food system and the importance of integrating geography and transportation in analysis of international trade. Other panels dealt with transportation technology, past and future, the changing policy... |

This paper argues that the rapid agricultural expansion of the cerrado regions in Brazil is due to the low price of land in these regions, as compared with the other agricultural regions of Brazil and abroad. This low price of land is, in turn, attributed not only to the greater distance of these regions from the main markets, but also to the limitations of natural resources (the extremely harsh drought period, which limits agricultural activities to grains and livestock) and, above all, to technological innovations that “produced” an abundance of land of good quality. In order to show more clearly how this process has taken place, the paper develops a model of the land market that allows for “production of land,” and derives the implications of such a... |
