| On two organic farms, the effect of supplementation with either home-grown barley or organic commercial concentrates primarily based on local protein sources and barley, on weight gain and subclinical coccidiosis was investigated in 3-5 months old dairy breed calves in the period after turn-out to ryegrass/clover pastures. The calves (mean liveweight ± SD, 124 ± 24 kg and 133 ± 24 kg on Farm I and II respectively) were supplemented daily with 3 kg energy and protein-rich commercial concentrates (group EP), 3 kg barley (group E) or ½ kg barley (group Eres) for 8 weeks following turn-out on pasture. | Zusammenfassend lässt sich nach den in Berlin (7. Fachgespräch zum Pflanzenschutz im ökologischen Landbau) vorgestellten Ergebnissen feststellen, dass momentan auf den Einsatz von Kupfer als Pflanzenschutzmittel im ökologischen Landbau noch nicht verzichtet werden kann. Um die Umweltauswirkungen auf Boden und Gewässer so gering wie möglich zu halten, muss die Aufwandmenge deutlich reduziert werden. Andererseits muss natürlich die fungizide Wirkung erhalten bleiben. Ein Durchbruch beim Ersatz von Kupferpräparaten ist hinsichtlich Wirksamkeit und Kontinuität noch nicht gegeben. Deshalb ist zunehmend mehr Wert auf Präventionsmaßnahmen zu legen. |

| Twenty-two scab-resistant apple cultivars were harvested in autumn 1999 and evaluated for sensory quality the following October, November and December. Multivariate analysis was effective in describing the comblex relationships and variabillity among the numerous attributes used to characterise apple quality. Crispness, mealiness, skin toughness, apple flavour, sweetness, unripe flavour and overripe flavour were informative attributes describing the variation in the sensory quality. Texture attributes, apple flavour and overripe flavour were affected by storage. | The strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivars ‘Suvetar’ and ‘Valotar’ have been released from the breeding programme of MTT Agrifood Research Finland. Both new cultivars overwintered as well as the control cultivars ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ overwintered even better than ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ was produced from the cross ‘Polka’ × ‘Emily’. It scored better than the control cultivars for sensory assessed skin resistance. | Auch im ökologischen Anbau von Tomaten, Paprika und Auberginen werden vermehrt veredelte Pflanzen eingesetzt. Am Markt werden für jede Kulturart verschiedene Unterlagen angeboten. Am Kompetenzzentrum für den ökoloischen Gemüsebau in Bamberg (Bayr. Landesanstalt f. Wein- u. Gartenbau) wurden in 2007 hierzu umfangreiche Vergleiche durchgeführt. Es zeigte sich, dass die Wahl der Unterlage eine massive Auswirkung auf den Ertrag haben kann. Nicht alle Unterlagen sind für den Bioanbau gleich gut geeignet. Bei der Auswahl der passenden Unterlage reicht es keinesfalls die Resistenzen zu betrachten, auch andere Faktoren müssen Beachtung finden. |

| Gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants cause high economic losses. Thus on most farms anthelmintic treatment is required. In response to increasing problems with anthelmintic resistance, biological control, for example the use of nematophagous fungi, has received significant attention. | Soil fertility management in organic systems, regulated by the organic standards, should seek to build healthy, fertile soils and reduce reliance on external inputs. The use of nutrients from conventional sources, such as animal manures from conventional farms, is currently permitted, with restrictions, in the organic regulations. | Es wird über Ergebnisse zur Mehlqualität von Weizen berichtet, die mit einem neu entwickelten optimierten Backtest im Forschungsring e.V. Darmstadt im Rahmen eines BÖL-Projektes erzielt wurden. Der Test ermittelt das Potential einer Sorte unter optimierten Bedingungen (Knetzeit). Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass die untersuchten Sorten für hohe Backvolumina >660 ml/100g Mehl (Type 550) weniger Kleber benötigten als bisher angenommen. Anhand der gängigen Bewertungsmaßstäbe wie Kleber-und Proteinkonzen-tration konnte das tatsächliche Backpotential der Mehle nicht vorhergesagt werden. |

| In a field experiment, we evaluated effects of three different organic white cabbage-cropping systems (O1, O2, O3) on the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, and its egg predators and pupal parasitoids over 3 years. The three systems all complied with regulations for organic production, but varied in external nutrient input and N-recycling, and were compared to a conventionally farmed control. | Die Veredelung von Forellen bietet vor allem kleineren Fischproduktions- und -verarbeitungsbetrieben die Möglichkeit, große Produktionsanteile direkt zu vermarkten und damit den Umsatz zu steigern. Die Gewichtsverluste betrugen im Versuch bis zum küchenfertigen Fisch 17 %, bis zur ganzen Räucherforelle 30 % und bis zum Räucherforellenfilet 51 %. Zur Herstellung von einem Kilogramm Produkt werden dafür im kleinen Verarbeitungsbetrieb 2,6, 10,2 bzw. 34,0 Arbeitskraftminuten benötigt. Bei einer Stundenentlohnung von 15,- EUR werden die Produkte „Küchenfertige Forelle“ mit etwa 0,70 EUR/kg, „Räucherforelle ganz“ mit 2,50 EUR/kg und „Räucherforellenfilet vakuumverpackt“ mit 8,50 EUR/kg durch Arbeitskosten belastet. |
