| Depuis 1954, les pêcheurs de la côte ouest des Etats-Unis utilisent des tambours enrouleurs pour leurs chaluts de fond traditionnels. Cette méthode a permis en particulier de réduire le nombre des hommes embarqués, tout en augmentant leur sécurité. Il est habituel de voir dans ces conditions, des chalutiers de 20 à 25 m et de 400 à 500 cv avec des équipages de 3 à 4 hommes. Ces dix dernières années, le chalutage pélagique à un ou deux bateaux s'est développé chez les riverains de la Mer du Nord. La technique a abouti à l'utilisation de chaluts très grands, mesurant jusqu'à 150 m de long et possédant des mailles de 300 et 400 mm de côté à l'entêture, donc encombrants et difficiles à manier. | It has been proposed that the opening of the Bay of Biscay occurred by rotation about a pole situated near Paris (50.0° N, 3.3° E) and not about the pole proposed by Bullard et al.(4) (43.6° N, 1.0° E). The rotation about the first pole results in strike-slip motion aIong the North Pyrenean fault during the pre-Upper-Cretaceous opening, while the rotation about the second pole results in compression there. The second rotation is not compatible with geological data(5) which indicates extension prior to Upper Cretaceous in the Pyrenean region. | Growth rate, condition and mortalities in groups of oysters in oyster-beds in the Belon River were studied during 1968 and 1969. The growth rate up to the beginning of the summer was higher in 1969 than in 1968. Variations in the condition of the oysters during the 2 summers were related to the state of development of the reproductive organs and this sexual development was earlier in 1969 than in 1968 because of a sudden rapid rise in temp. Whereas relatively mortalities occurred during 1968, many oyster beds in the River Belon were decimated during 1969. Indications are given about the times and geometries of opening of these basins. The implications of these results on the Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic history of South-Western Europe are important. | Statistics on the pilchard fishery in the Bay of Biscay are given. In this area in 1967 a biological study was undertaken of adults, eggs and larvae. Breeding areas have been better defined. Breeding occurs in winter and spring and the fish are stenothermic when breeding. Zones yielding most eggs and larvae may bear no relation to the supposed areas of origin of fish with different mean vertebral counts. It was thought that each main region of the Bay (Armorican massif, Aquitanian basins and Cantabrian region) had its own race, but this may not be so, and the racial significance of the vertebral mean should be re-investigated. |

The male morphology corroborates the interpretation of some reduced structures present on the female ; the original structure of the male maxilliped separates Rhodinicola from the classical genera of the family Clausiidae. | At a neap tide, an attempt was made to follow the quantitative and qualitative nycthemeral variations in a planktonic population under the influence of the tide. Simultaneous study was made of changes in the physical medium and the biological material present. Physical measurements at 4 depths, of salinity, density, and speed and direction of current, were made every hr and eventually correlated with plankton samples made at 2 hourly intervals. Physical results are shown in graphs and tables and an analysis given of the zooplankton studied. Examination of the biovol obtained by sedimentation revealed a greater density of organisms at night, copepods forming the principal component of the plankton.
