Use of multielement stable isotope ratios to investigate ontogenetic movements of Micropogonias furnieri in a tropical Brazilian estuary ArchiMer
Pizzochero, Ana Carolina; Michel, Loic; Chenery, Simon R.; Mccarthy, Ian D.; Vianna, Marcelo; Malm, Olaf; Lepoint, Gilles; Das, Krishna; Dorneles, Paulo R..
The whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, is a long-lived fish of high commercial importance in the Western Atlantic Ocean. Here, we used stable isotope ratios of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen and isotopic niche metrics (SIBER) to study feeding habits and track habitat use by whitemouth croakers in Guanabara Bay, an estuary in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Our results highlighted size-related habitat segregation, with small juvenile (< 30 cm) fishes residing mostly inside estuaries, while large adult (> 60 cm) fishes feed mainly in Continental Shelf (CS) waters. Medium adult fishes (30-60 cm) appear to feed in multiple coastal and CS habitats. Moreover, their feeding ecology showed strong temporal differences, linked with seasonal and, to a...

Metrics for describing dyadic movement: a review ArchiMer
Joo, Rocio; Etienne, Marie-pierre; Bez, Nicolas; Mahevas, Stephanie.
In movement ecology, the few works that have taken collective behaviour into account are data-driven and rely on simplistic theoretical assumptions, relying in metrics that may or may not be measuring what is intended. In the present paper, we focus on pairwise joint-movement behaviour, where individuals move together during at least a segment of their path. We investigate the adequacy of twelve metrics introduced in previous works for assessing joint movement by analysing their theoretical properties and confronting them with contrasting case scenarios. Two criteria are taken into account for review of those metrics: 1) practical use, and 2) dependence on parameters and underlying assumptions. When analysing the similarities between the metrics as...

Fatigue of polyamide mooring ropes for floating wind turbines ArchiMer
Chevillotte, Yoan; Marco, Yann; Davies, Peter; Bles, Guilhem; Arhant, Mael.
This paper describes a study of the fatigue characterization of polyamide mooring ropes for floating wind turbines. Under some conditions polyester ropes, which are favoured for offshore platform station-keeping, are too stiff for wind turbine moorings, and polyamide may be a suitable alternative. While early studies on fatigue of braided nylon ropes showed very short lifetimes some recent results have indicated that it is possible to significantly enhance lifetime by modifying rope construction and improving fibre coatings [1]. The fatigue results presented here for ropes from a different supplier, confirm this result. In order to develop an accelerated evaluation of the fatigue performance, heat build-up tests have been performed, and promising first...

Using an integral projection model to assess the effect of temperature on the growth of gilthead seabream Sparus aurata ArchiMer
Heather, F. J.; Childs, D. Z.; Darnaude, A. M.; Blanchard, J. L..
Accurate information on the growth rates of fish is crucial for fisheries stock assessment and management. Empirical life history parameters (von Bertalanffy growth) are widely fitted to cross-sectional size-at-age data sampled from fish populations. This method often assumes that environmental factors affecting growth remain constant over time. The current study utilized longitudinal life history information contained in otoliths from 412 juveniles and adults of gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, a commercially important species fished and farmed throughout the Mediterranean. Historical annual growth rates over 11 consecutive years (2002-2012) in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) were reconstructed to investigate the effect of temperature variations on...

Forces, failles et opportunités de la recherche française en écologie trophique ArchiMer
Perga, Marie-elodie; Danger, Michael; Dubois, Stanislas; Fritch, Clementine; Gaucherel, Cedric; Hubas, Cedric; Jabot, Franck; Lacroix, Gerard; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Marmonier, Pierre; Bec, Alexandre.
The French National Institute of Ecology and Environment (INEE) aims at fostering pluridisciplinarity in Environmental Science and, for that purpose, funds ex muros research groups (GDR) on thematic topics. Trophic ecology has been identified as a scientific field in ecology that would greatly benefit from such networking activity, as being profoundly scattered. This has motivated the seeding of a GDR, entitled “GRET”. The contours of the GRET's action, and its ability to fill these gaps within trophic ecology at the French national scale, will depend on the causes of this relative scattering. This study relied on a nationally broadcasted poll aiming at characterizing the field of trophic ecology in France. Amongst all the unique individuals that fulfilled...

Indicator-Based Geostatistical Models For Mapping Fish Survey Data ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Woillez, Mathieu; Doray, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques.
Marine research survey data on fish stocks often show a small proportion of very high-density values, as for many environmental data. This makes the estimation of second-order statistics, such as the variance and the variogram, non-robust. The high fish density values are generated by fish aggregative behaviour, which may vary greatly at small scale in time and space. The high values are thus imprecisely known, both in their spatial occurrence and order of magnitude. To map such data, three indicator-based geostatistical methods were considered, the top-cut model, min–max autocorrelation factors (MAF) of indicators, and multiple indicator kriging. In the top-cut and MAF approaches, the variable is decomposed into components and the most continuous ones...

How do microalgae perceive light in a high-rate pond? Towards more realistic Lagrangian experiments ArchiMer

Hydrodynamics in a high-rate production reactor for microalgae cultivation affects the light history perceived by cells. The interplay between cell movement and medium turbidity leads to a complex light pattern, whose forcing effects on photosynthesis and photoacclimation dynamics are nontrivial. Hydrodynamics of high density algal ponds mixed by a paddle wheel has been studied recently, although the focus has never been on describing its impact on photosynthetic growth efficiency. In this multidisciplinary downscaling study, we first reconstructed single cell trajectories in an open raceway using an original hydrodynamical model offering a powerful discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations tailored to systems with free surfaces. The trajectory of a...

Applicability of Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models across steep environmental gradients ArchiMer
Monaco, Cristian; Mcquaid, Christopher D..
Robust ecological forecasting requires accurate predictions of physiological responses to environmental drivers. Energy budget models facilitate this by mechanistically linking biology to abiotic drivers, but are usually ground-truthed under relatively stable physical conditions, omitting temporal/spatial environmental variability. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory is a powerful framework capable of linking individual fitness to environmental drivers and we tested its ability to accommodate variability by examining model predictions across the rocky shore, a steep ecotone characterized by wide fluctuations in temperature and food availability. We parameterized DEB models for co-existing mid/high-shore (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and mid/low-shore (Perna...

Nitrogen isotope variations in the northern South China Sea since marine isotopic stage 3: reconstructed from foraminifera-bound and bulk sedimentary nitrogen ArchiMer
Wang, Tingting; Ravelo, Ana Christina; Ren, Haojia; Dang, Haowen; Jin, Haiyan; Liu, Jingjing; Jian, Zhimin.
We report the differences between δ15N of organic nitrogen bound in foraminifera tests (foraminifera‐bound δ15N, or FB‐δ15N), which is considered an effective recorder of thermocline nitrate δ15N in the oligotrophic areas, and bulk sedimentary δ15N (δ15Nbulk) of core MD12‐3433, located in the northern South China Sea (SCS), to explore possible causes of the offset between these two proxies in the SCS. The offset can be best explained by the influence of the terrigenous input on δ15Nbulk, as evidenced by its general correlation with sea level changes, C:N ratios, and inorganic nitrogen contribution to total nitrogen. Moreover, our new record is compared to six previously published δ15Nbulk records of the SCS based on their geographical proximity to the...

Influence of Tropical Instability Waves on Phytoplankton Biomass near the Marquesas Islands ArchiMer
Martinez, Elodie; Raapoto, Hirohiti; Maes, Christophe; Maamaatuaihutapu, Keitapu.
The Marquesas form an isolated group of small islands in the Central South Pacific where quasi-permanent biological activity is observed. During La Niña events, this biological activity, shown by a net increase of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl, a proxy of phytoplankton biomass), is particularly strong. It has been hypothesized that this strong activity is due to iron-rich waters advected from the equatorial region to the Marquesas by tropical instability waves (TIWs). Here we investigate this hypothesis over 18 years by combining satellite observations, re-analyses of ocean data, and Lagrangian diagnostics. Four La Niña events ranging from moderate to strong intensity occurred during this period, and our results show that the Chl plume within the...

Subtidal Microphytobenthos: A Secret Garden Stimulated by the Engineer Species Crepidula fornicata ArchiMer
Androuin, Thibault; Polerecky, Lubos; Decottignies, Priscilla; Dubois, Stanislas; Dupuy, Christine; Hubas, Cedric; Jesus, Bruno; Le Gall, Erwan; Marzloff, Martin; Carlier, Antoine.
The slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata is an emblematic invasive species along the northeast Atlantic coast. This gregarious gastropod lives in stacks of several individuals and forms extended beds in shallow subtidal areas. The effects of this engineer species on the colonized habitat can be physical (e.g., presence of hard-shell substrates with uneven topography) or biological (e.g., nutrient enrichment by direct excretion or via biodeposition). We hypothesized that through biological activity, nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface are enhanced, leading to stimulated primary productivity by microphytobenthos (MPB) associated with Crepidula beds. To test this fertilization hypothesis, we conducted a 10-day mesocosm experiment using C. fornicata...

Effets d’une exposition alimentaire chronique à un mélange environnemental de PCB et PBDE sur les traits d’histoire de vie, la bioénergétique et la dynamique des populations de poissons ArchiMer
Horri, Khaled.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a broad group of compounds with varying physicochemical and toxic properties. Among POP, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two families of hydrophobic compounds sharing some similar environmental properties such as hydrophobicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Previous studies have demonstrated that these compounds could affect fish life-history traits such as survival, growth and reproductive success. However, few studies have focused on environmental situations as most previous works investigated the effect of either single congeners, or single families of molecules among POP, or high concentrations, so that results can hardly be transposed to natural...

Diet and feeding observations from an unusual beluga harvest in 2014 in Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories, Canada ArchiMer
Loseto, Lisa L.; Brewster, Jasmine D.; Ostertag, Sonja K.; Snow, Kathleen; Macphee, Shannon A.; Mcnicholl, Darcy G.; Choy, Emily S.; Giraldo, Carolina; Hornby, Claire A..
The Eastern Beaufort Sea (EBS) beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) population are an important traditional food for the Inuit of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Northwest Territories (NT) Canada. In 2014, over 30 beluga whales were harvested at Ulukhaktok, NT, the first occurrence for a large harvest in the area. Unlike observations from the established beluga harvest monitoring in the Mackenzie Estuary, these belugas had numerous prey and prey items in their stomachs. Our study objectives were to combine traditional and local knowledge (TLK) from beluga hunters with the analysis of dissected stomachs to identify EBS beluga diet, feeding behaviour, as well as gain insights into potential drivers of the event. TLK holders witnessed foraging behaviors such as...

Experimental analysis of the floor inclination effect on the turbulent wake developing behind a wall mounted cube ArchiMer
Ikhennicheu, Maria; Gaurier, Benoit; Druault, Philippe; Germain, Gregory.
The present study aims at investigating turbulence characteristics in high flow velocity areas like those suitable for marine energy application. The Reynolds number, based on the rugosity height and mean flow velocity, is rather high: . For that purpose, experiments are carried out in a flume tank with as high as achievable in Froude similitude (in the tank: and ). Obstacles are canonical wall-mounted elements chosen to be representative of averaged bathymetric variations: a cube and a cube followed by an inclined floor. First, the wake topology past a canonical wall-mounted cube is illustrated from PIV measurements. Results show a flow behaviour already observed in the literature but for different upstream conditions ( and turbulence intensity). Second,...
