Estimating the Value of Groundwater in Irrigation AgEcon
Brozovic, Nicholas; Islam, Shahnila.
In recent years there has been increasing regulation of agricultural water use in order to reduce transboundary and environmental water conflicts. Effective policy analysis needs to have tools to estimate correctly the value of irrigation water. Irrigating land increases crop yields and this higher profitability should be capitalized into the sales price of the land. For irrigation that depends on surface water rights, studies have found this to be the case (Xu et al. 1993, Faux and Perry 1999). However, studies that have analyzed the value of groundwater in irrigation have found mixed results. Hartman and Taylor (1989) and Sunderland, Libbin and Torell (1987) find that groundwater irrigation has no significant effect on land prices; Torrell et al. (1990)...

A Bioeconomic Model of the Soybean Aphid Treatment Decision in Soybeans AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Badibanga, Thaddee Mutumba.
Since its first detection in the North Central region in July 2000, the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsamura) has caused considerable loss in soybean (Glycine max L.) yield, bean quality, and producer income. Discovered first in Wisconsin and then in adjoining states, it is currently distributed in 21 US states and parts of Canada. In 2003, over 42 million acres of soybean in the North Central US were infested and over 7 million acres were treated with insecticides to control soybean aphid (Landis et al. 2003). Populations exceeding 24,000 aphids per plant and 40% losses in seed yield have been reported (DiFonzo & Hines 2002). Even prior to the outbreak of 2003, the Soybean Strategic Pest Management Plan identified soybean aphid as one of the key...

Can Conventional Crop Producers Also Benefit From Bt Technology? AgEcon
Dun, Zhe; Mitchell, Paul D..
Transgenic plants producing insecticidal protein derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been widely adopted since their commercial introduction in 1996. In 2009, 25 countries planted 134 million ha of transgenic crops. The widespread adoption of such plants has reduced use of conventional insecticides while attaining yield gains, thus providing economic, environmental and human health benefits. Because of Bt crops’ high pest control efficacy, there is concern that pests will develop resistance to Bt toxins so that Bt crops are less or no longer effective. To delay the evolution of resistance, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently requires Bt crop growers to also plant non-Bt (conventional) crops on a minimum percentage of their...

A földbirtok-politika lehetséges irányai (Az eddigi vita összefoglalása) AgEcon
Kapronczai, Istvan.
A „Gazdálkodás” 2010. évi 2. számában vitacikkem jelent meg „A földbirtok-politikaválaszt igénylő kérdései” címen. Ezzel az volt a célom, hogy a témakörrel kapcsolatban felvessek kérdéseket, leírjak megállapításokat, és ezzel egy olyan vitát generáljak, ami fórumot ad a tudományos közélet szereplőinek a megszólalásra, a vélemények ütköztetésére, egymás nézeteinek jobb megértésére, a politika számára javaslatok megfogalmazására. A vitában az agrárgazdaságtan, üzemtan képviselői és mások kifejthették a véleményüket olyan fontos birtokpolitikai kérdésekkel kapcsolatban, mint a földtulajdon, a földhasználat, a földbérlet, a földpiac, a mezőgazdasági üzemszabályozás, a tagosítás, a föld öröklése, a külföldiek földhöz jutása, az...

A támogatások szerepe a magyar mezőgazdaságban AgEcon
Kovacs, Gabor.

Widespread Adoption of Organic Agriculture in the US: Are Market-Driven Policies Enough? AgEcon
Klonsky, Karen; Greene, Catherine R..
Organic food production has rapidly growing consumer demand in the U.S. and other industrialized countries, along with a worldwide regulatory framework and rapidly developing support infrastructure, making it a premier technology in the efforts of many public and private organizations that advocate more sustainable farming practices. The use of organic farming systems for crop production in the U.S. has grown rapidly during the last decade, but is still under 0.5 percent of total U.S. farmland-substantially less than in many countries in Europe and elsewhere. Within the U.S., conversion to organic farming systems has been more extensive in particular commodity sectors and regions. In California, for example, about two percent of the state's crop...

Genetically Modified Food and International Trade: The Case of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines AgEcon
Gruere, Guillaume P.; Bouet, Antoine; Mevel, Simon.
In the last eleven years, the global production of genetically modified (GM) crops has increased dramatically. Yet more than 95% of GM crops are produced in four countries: the United States, Argentina, Canada and China. During the same period, a group of countries with consumer opposition to GM food, lead by the European Union (EU) and Japan, have implemented stringent policies regulating the approval and import of GM crops and the marketing of GM food. In the context of increased international agricultural trade, the regulations of these importers and the lack of demand for GM food in these countries likely limited the expansion of agricultural biotechnology to many developing countries. Cohen and Paarlberg (2002) argued that the restricted adoption and...

The Effect of Information on Consumer Preferences of Indoor Plants AgEcon
Solano, Alexis; House, Lisa; Gao, Zhifeng.
This study primarily focuses on the effect of information on consumers’ purchasing behavior. If consumers are provided with information about a specific product they may change their beliefs about that product. This distribution of information may lead the consumer to make the decision either to purchase or not purchase, or the consumer may increase or decrease the amount he or she is willing to pay. Here, the impact of information about indoor plants’ ability to reduce indoor air pollution on participants is analyzed. This research will add to the literature on consumer behavior and will also benefit the floriculture industry within the state of Florida. Florida’s floriculture sales have fluctuated during the last ten years. From 2000 to 2003 the...

Spatially Optimal Habitat Management For Natural Pest Control Services AgEcon
Zhang, Wei; van derr Werf, Wopke; Swinton, Scott M..
The control of crop pests by their natural enemies represents an important ecosystem service that maintains the stability of agricultural systems and has the potential to mitigate pest control costs. Recently, there has been growing interest in enhancing natural control services via habitat management that provides resources for adult natural enemies, such as food and shelter. Management of natural enemy populations has received little attention in the economic literature on pest control. Most such prior studies have explored optimal chemical-based pest management. One recent paper developed a threshold-based pesticide decision rule to account for the presence of natural enemies. However, no prior studies have investigated economically optimal spatial...

World Food Prospects: Critical Issues For the Early Twenty-First Century AgEcon
Pinstrup-Andersen, Per; Pandya-Lorch, Rajul; Rosegrant, Mark W..
About 73 million people will be added to the world’s population every year between 1995 and 2020, increasing it by 32 percent to reach 7.5 billion. Much of this population growth will occur in the cities of the developing world. While its rural population is expected to increase by less than 300 million during this period, the developing world’s urban population could double to 3.4 billion in 2020. Per capita incomes are expected to increase in all major developing regions over this period. Meeting the food needs of a growing and urbanizing population with rising incomes will have profound implications for the world’s agricultural production and trading systems in coming decades. IFPRI research suggests some of the major developments that will characterize...

Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association 2006 Annual Report AgEcon
Nordquist, Dale W.; Kurtz, James N.; Holcomb, Rob; Paulson, Garen J..
Average net farm income was $154,698 in 2006 for the 110 farms included in this annual report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. This is a 5% increase over the average income of $147,862 in 2005. In constant dollars, 2006 was slightly more profitable than the previous year and was again one of the most profitable years in the last 20 for association members (Figure 1). Outstanding crop prices coupled with above average crop yields more than compensated for reduced profitability of hog and beef enterprises. As in previous years, the actual profit levels experienced by individual farms vary greatly from the overall average profit. When the net farm incomes for the 110 farms in the report are ranked from lowest to highest,...

Migration and the Rural-Urban Continuum: Evidence from the Rural Philippines AgEcon
Quisumbing, Agnes R.; McNiven, Scott.
Migration is an important livelihood strategy in the Philippines. In 1991, 26 percent of urban households and 13 percent of rural households received remittances from migrant parents or children. Although international migration has received more attention than internal migration, the latter is significant in the Philippines. Between 1980 and 1990, the number of persons over the age of five years who were not resident in the city or municipality they resided in five years ago, increased from 2.85 to 3.24 million. Recent migration flows are interprovincial, typically in the direction of Metropolitan Manila and surrounding areas, and are dominated by women. While the percentage of the population classified as urban increased...

NEW INSTRUMENTS FOR CO-ORDINATION AND RISK SHARING WITHIN THE CANADIAN BEEF INDUSTRY AgEcon
Unterschultz, James R..
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Canadian beef industry has stated objectives of improving beef quality and consumer satisfaction while reducing unit costs of production. Suggested methods for achieving these goals include working towards value based marketing and improved information flows between different market levels through systems such as a birth to plate information system. These initiatives are designed to provide a more direct link between consumer product needs and breeding and management decisions at the farm level. The industrialization of agriculture has introduced a number of changes to the structure of livestock production (Boehlje 1996); from vertical integration (arrangements such as packers feeding cattle) and forward contracting to increasing...

Gender, institutions and sustainability in the context of forest decentralization reforms in Latin America and East Africa AgEcon
Sun, Yan; Mwangi, Esther; Meinzen-Dick, Ruth Suseela.
Women’s participation in decision making at the user-group level and in forest committees has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on forest sustainability. For example, women’s participation enhances forest regeneration and reduces illegal harvesting through improved monitoring. Their presence in forest user groups increases the groups’ capacity to manage and resolve conflict, which in turn increases the likelihood that resource users will comply with and respect harvesting and use rules. These insights have been especially useful in informing policy and project interventions designed to strength and amplify women’s participation. This paper adopts a cross-national approach and employs quantitative techniques to analyze the relative...

Empirically Evaluating Consumer Characteristics and Satisfaction with Organic Products AgEcon
Govindasamy, Ramu; DeCongelio, Marc; Italia, John; Barbour, Bruce; Anderson, Karen.
Organic production has been practiced in the U.S. since the late 1940s. The distinction between organic and conventional produce is that organic produce is grown with a maximum of five percent synthetic pesticide residues and no prohibited USDA substance can be used on the land three years prior to producing organic produce. No genetic engineering is to be used on the crops, and no antibiotics are to be used on the livestock (USDA, 2001). Organic produce is sold at a premium above the price for conventional produce due to the increased production costs associated with following these rules. Price premiums vary greatly among different organic products and retail facilities. Consumers of these comparatively higher priced items traditionally have been the...
