| The prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni in wild birds is a potential hazard for human and animal health. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of C. jejuni in wild birds in Tokachi area, Hokkaido, Japan and investigate their virulence in vitro. In total, 173 cloacal swabs from individual wild birds were collected for the detection of Campylobacter spp. Thirty four samples (19.7%) were positive for Campylobacter of which 94.1% (32/34 samples) were C. jejuni. Additionally, one C. coli and one C. fetus were isolated. Seven C. jejuni isolates (one from crows and the other from pigeons) had important virulence genes including all three CDT genes (cdtA, cdtB and cdtC) and flaA, flaB, ciaB and cadF, and the other isolates were lacking cdtA gene.... |

| ロシアの国家自然保護区機関の管轄する「国後島自然保護区クリリスキー」によって，保全・研究・環境教育を目的とした「ストルボフスキー生態観察路」が2001年に国後島中部に設置された．現在でも「クリリスキー」が本生態観察路の管理・整備を担当している．本生態観察路の優占樹種はオヒョウUlmus laciniata，ハルニレUlmus davidiana，エゾイタヤAcer pictum，ケヤマハンノキAlnus hirsuta であり，林床ではクマイザサSasa senanensis，オニシモツケFilipendula camtschatica，エゾイラクサUrtica platyphyllaとアキタブキPetasites japonicusが小班状に優占する．昆虫類では多くの甲虫類およびチョウ類種が確認されているが，国後島の他地域と比べた場合，特にチョウ類の種数が多いことが報告されている．鳥類については，本生態観察路を含む国後島中部から46種が確認されている．国後島には26種の陸棲哺乳類が生息するが，2015年8月15日～16日に本観察路で実施した哺乳類調査の結果，シマリスTamias sibiricus 1個体，キツネVulpes vulpesの糞を12個（この内10個にはネズミ類の体毛が多く含まれていた），クロテンMartes zibellinaの糞を1個，さらにヒグマUrsus arctosの糞1個を確認することができた．本観察路の自然は良く保全されており，少なくとも数種の哺乳類種に利用されていることが明らかになったが，同時にヒグマによる人身事故，およびキツネの糞を介したヒトへのエキノコックス症感染の可能性も危惧され，今後島民に対する適切な啓蒙活動が必要であることが示唆された． |

| Bovine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder causing congestive heart failure and subsequent death. Recently, a nonsense mutation c.343C>T in the bovine optic atrophy 3 (OPA3) gene had been reported to cause the DCM in Holstein cattle in Switzerland. However, the mutation has not been confirmed in bovine DCM outside Switzerland. Nine Holstein Friesian cows that were macroscopically and histologically diagnosed with or suspected of DCM and 12 control cows kept in Japan were tested for the mutation. The mutation surrounding OPA3 DNA fragment was amplified by PCR and subjected to direct sequences. | To quantify the radiographic parameters of the caudal vena cava (CVC) in healthy cattle and demonstrate their clinical usefulness, the present study compared the ratios of the diameter of the thoracic CVC to the diameter of the aorta (Ao) and length of the thoracic vertebrae (VL), which are all positioned in the same intercostal space, in 81 healthy control cattle (43 growing, 38 adult) and 10 cattle with heart disease. The average diameter of the CVC (CVCave) was correlated with the size of the Ao and VL in the control cows.
