A Bird’s Head (= Vogelkop = Kepala Burung) database is under construction in L, in cooperation with K. It is part of a flora project in the NE Bird’s Head, a joint project of BO, K, MAN, and was established by Dr. R.E. Johns and his colleagues (K). Information stored in the database includes collector(s), collection number, identification, locality, and altitude (for part of the collections). The data were brought together in two checklists (Coode et al., 1997; Johns et al., 1997), which were distributed to the relevant herbaria. |

Dr. P. S. Ashton has taken up an appointment as a lecturer in botany at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, after the completion of his work in Sarawak in September 1966. A programme of cooperation has come into existence between the universities of Aberdeen and Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. Dr. Ashton’s teaching duties will leave him plenty of time for research and facilities will be cheated that he regularly can spend a period in the Malesian Archipelago for field work. Dr. L. J. Brass retired from the Archbold Expeditions and Museums in May 1966. He returned to Australia where he has been offered an honorary curatorship to the Herbarium of the North Queensland Naturalist’s Club at Cairns. |

The ARBEC (ASEAN Review of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation) Research & Development Team has compiled a comprehensive weblink of all ten ASEAN countries (i.e., Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). These links will provide more organized accessibility and hence promote better understanding on ‘who’s doing what and where’ in the effort to enhance biodiversity research and environmental conservation in the region. The links are categorized for each country as follows: 1. Organization 2. Resources/Studies 3. Map 4. Environmental Acts 5. Since this silver jubilee does not mean the end of a career, let it merely be regarded as a landmark from which we may now look back. Herman Johannes Lam, born at Veendam in 1892, received his grammarschool education at the ‘Gymnasium Erasmianum’ in Rotterdam (1904—1911). He studied natural history at the State University of Utrecht (1911—1919) and enjoyed the privilege of having Prof. Dr A.A. Pulle as his teacher in systematic botany. In 1919 he obtained his doctor’s degree on a thesis “The Verbenaceae of the Malayan Archipelago etc.” which concluded his studies. |

Mag ik me even voorstellen: André de Bonte, 26 jaar oud. |

Taiwan herbaceous flora (see Fl.Mal.Bull. 22, p. 1562). In 1968 Prof. Hui-Lin Li spent a considerable time in Taiwan discussing this project with Taiwan botanists and authorities. An agreement was finally reached among those who are to be actively participating and a plan of procedure and a budget were prepared. These were presented to the Science Commission of the Central Government for approval. No action has yet been taken (Dec. 1968). Prof. Li will spend half a year sabbatical leave at the Smithsonian for this work. Musci of Taiwan. During two summers of 1967 and 1968 Dr. Ching-Chang Chuang collected Musci in Formosa and is working on these in the University of Vancouver, Canada. |

New authors. Again a number of colleagues have volunteered to participate in the Flora Malesiana project and to treat a number of taxa, i.e. Balsaminaceae (Dr. Shimizu, KANA) and Saxifragaceae (Dr. L.G. Saw, KEP), whereas for the Pteridaceae we are trying to raise funds to set up a team (Dr. M. Zink and Mr. H. Schneider [Z] and Dr. Aziz Bidin [UKMB]). Annonaceae. Dr. K. Mat-Salleh (UKMB) is studying Cyathocalyx, Drepananthus, Enicosanthum, Goniothalamus, Marsypopetalum, Mitrephora, Neouvaria, Woodiellantha, and Xylopia for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak. |
