Zoonotic pathogens in land-applied dairy wastewaters are a potential health risk. The abundance and occurrence of 10 pathogens and 3 fecal indicators was determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) in 30 dairy wastewaters from southern Idaho. Samples tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni, stx1- and eaeA-positive Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium avium, and Salmonella enterica, with mean recoveries ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 genome copies per mL of wastewater. The most dominant organisms were C. jejuni and M. avium, being detected in up to 21 and 29 of 30 wastewater ponds, respectively. The qPCR detection limits for the putative pathogens in the wastewaters ranged from 16 cells mL for M. avium to 1,689 oocysts mL for... |

This paper is an introduction to the Advances in Irrigation Special Collection in this issue of Transactions ASABE and the next issue of Applied Engineering in Agriculture of 14 papers selected from 88 papers and presentations at the ASABE 5th Decennial National Irrigation Symposium, December 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona. This symposium followed the objectives of the previous four decennial events to provide a forum to assess progress of research endeavors to advance the effectiveness of irrigation practices during the past 10 years, leading to further research priorities that respond to future challenges. The papers in this Collection address a wide range of topics grouped into broad categories: microirrigation, center pivot irrigation, crop water use for... |

The purpose of this research was to characterize the structure and composition of bacterial communities in sandy loam and silty clay soils amended with 30% spent sand from iron, aluminum, and steel foundries. All spent foundry sand (SFS) blends were grown with or without perennial ryegrass and samples were collected at 4 weeks and 6 months. Regions of the 16S rRNA gene were amplified using PCR and subsequently analyzed by DGGE and sequenced for bacterial identification and phylogenetic classification. Cluster analyses of PCR-DGGE banding patterns revealed that SFS blends from week 4 and month 6 produced unique clusters, with most ryegrass treatments clustering away from those without ryegrass. The diversity of the bacterial community revealed that it... |

Fossil fuel burning at the present rate, will double atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in this century, raising air temperature 1.5 to 5 °C. Sequestering carbon (C) in soil can reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration. We measured inorganic and organic C in southern Idaho soils having long term land use histories of native sagebrush vegetation (NSB), irrigated moldboard plowed crops (IMP), irrigated conservation- (chisel) tilled crops (ICT) and irrigated pasture systems (IP). Soil Organic C (SOC) decreased in the order IP>ICT>NSB>IMP. We used our findings to estimate potential amounts of organic C sequestered if irrigated agriculture expanded. If irrigated agricultural land was expanded by10°/0 worldwide and NSB was converted to ICT, 2.5 x 10... |

Development of best management practices can help improve inorganic nitrogen (N) availability to plants and reduce nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching in soils. This study was conducted to determine the influence of the zeolite mineral Clinoptilolite (CL) additions on NO3-N and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N) in two common Pacific Northwest soils. The effects of CL application rate (up to 26.9 Mg ha-1) either band applied or mixed with a set rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on masses of NO3-N and NH4-N in leachate and soil was investigated in a column study using a Portneuf silt loam (coarse-silty mixed mesic Durixerollic Caliciorthid) and a Wolverine sand (Mixed, frigid Xeric Torripsamment). All treatments for each soil received a uniform application of N from... |

The Rhizoctonia-bacterial root rot complex continues to be a concerning problem in sugar beet production areas. To investigate resistance to this complex in 26 commercial sugar beet cultivars, field studies and greenhouse studies with mature roots from the field were conducted with Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2 IIIB strains and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. Based on means for the 26 cultivars in the 2010 and 2011 field studies, fungal rot ranged from 0 to 8%, bacterial rot ranged from 0 to 37%, total rot ranged from 0 to 44%, and surface rot ranged from 0 to 52%. All four rot variables resulted in significant (P < 0.0001) cultivar differences. Based on regression analysis, strong positive relationships (r2 from 0.6628 to 0.9320; P < 0.0001) were present... |

Technical Abstract: Increased water demands and drought have resulted in a need to indentify crop hybrids that are drought tolerant, requiring less irrigation to sustain yields. This study was conducted to assess differences in drought tolerance among a group of genetically diverse sugarbeet hybrids. The study was conducted over three consecutive growing seasons (2008-2010) at the USDA Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory in Kimberly, ID on a Portneuf silt loam soil (coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid). Drought tolerance was evaluated by measuring sucrose yield production of six experimental hybrids of KWS SAAT AG and one commercial hybrid (Betaseed Inc.) under six water input treatments. Hybrid drought... |
