Round Table discussions OMA
Coomans, A.; De Coninck, L.A.P.; Heip, C.H.R..
The round table discussions at the end of the meeting were summarized from tape recordings that were not always clear and voices could not always be identified. Therefore we decided to give the main ideas that were expressed and were proposed or accepted by all or a majority of the participants, without reference to any person. We hope that this summary is a true reflection of what was said with many more words.

Structural characteristics of phytoplankton assemblages in tidal and non-tidal freshwater systems: a case study from the Schelde basin, Belgium OMA
Muylaert, K.; Van Kerckvoorde, A.; Vyverman, W.; Sabbe, K..
<ol><li>The Schelde estuary, its side basins and their tributaries were sampled in August 1995 and April 1996 for phytoplankton abundance, biomass and species composition. In order to clarify the underlying causes of differences in phytoplanton communities, the results were related to some important abiotic variables.<li>Although species richness and diversity did not differ significantly between the riverine and the freshwater tidal stations, multivariate ordination techniques based on species abundances differentiate between these two ecosystems. While in the rivers phytoplankton standing stocks were as high in summer as in spring, standing stocks in the freshwater tidal estuary were significantly higher in the August...

Supplementation of lipid emulsions to algal diets in the hatchery rearing of bivalves OMA
Coutteau, P.; Caers, M.; Curé, K.; Gajardo, G..
The success of hatchery production of bivalves remains highly unpredictable and mortalities are often attributed to deficiencies in certain nutritionally important components. Several studies have implicated the importance of lipids, in particular triglycerides, in the early life stages as a source of energy and essential fatty acids. Experimental diets used so far in bivalve nutrition studies are either heavily polluting the water or too complex to prepare on a regular basis in a hatchery. Self emulsifying concentrates of marine oils are off-the-shell lipid supplements that may be acceptable for bivalves. A series of studies were performed with different species and life stages to evaluate the potential use of these lipid emulsions as a supplement for...

Effect of different light regimes on the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of <i>Isochrysis</i> aff. <i>galbana</i> (clone T-ISO) OMA
Tzovenis, I.; De Pauw, N.; Sorgeloos, P..
The culture of <i>Isochrysis</i> aff. <i>galbana</i> Green (T-ISO) in hatcheries is promoted for its high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content which favours the successful rearing of aquatic larvae. In this paper we identified the need for well-defined culture conditions of microalgae if sufficient DHA content is the final goal. Using photoperiods of 24:0h, 12:12h and 16:8h L/D combined with photon flux densities (PFD's) of 110, 220 and 460 µE m-2 s-1, batch cultures of T-ISO were sampled for DHA content in the exponential as well as the post-exponential (light-limited) growth phase. The various light regimes resulted in differences of DHA content of T-ISO revealing influences and strong...

A reappraisal of the systematics of the Monocelididae (Platyhelminthes, Proseriata): inferences from rDNA sequences OMA
Litvaitis, M.K.; Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Martens, P.M.; Kocher, T.D..
The current classification system for the Monocelididae which is based on the character "presence or absence of an accessory prostatoid organ" divides the family into two subfamilies, namely the Minoninae and the Monocelididinae. However, other characters relating to the structure of the male copulatory bulb and to karyotypes do not support this division. Monocelidid male copulatory bulbs can be either of the simplex or the duplex-type, and if this character is mapped onto the current classification, then both subfamilies contain species with either type of copulatory bulb. We therefore decided to construct an independent phylogeny for the Monocelididae using nucleotide-sequence data of the gene coding for the 26/28S rDNA. Distance and parsimony-based...

Variability and productivity of meiobenthos in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vincx, M..
The composition and density of meiofauna in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea are essentially similar to those over large spatial scales. However, the impact of pollution from the Western Scheldt river is clearly reflected in a decrease in diversity on all taxonomic levels. Nematodes are the only animal group that survives in normal or even greater abundance, albeit it with lower diversity. Total meiofauna production is estimated at 1.5-2.0 g C m-2yr-1 and equals or even greatly exceeds macrofauna production in the area.

Determination of the toxicity of four heavy metal compounds and three carcinogens using two marine nematode species, <i>Monhystera microphthalma</i> and <i>Diplolaimelloides bruciei</i> OMA
Bogaert, T.; Samoiloff, M.R.; Persoone, G..
Bioassays with two marine nematode species were used to determine the toxicity of four heavy metal compounds and three carcinogens. The test using the marine species <i>Diplolaimelloides bruciei</i> is more sensitive than the existing nematode test using the freshwater nematode <i>Panagrellus redivivus</i> for mercury chloride and 2-acetamidofluorene, but less sensitive for methylmercury chloride, phenacetin, and 4-aminobiphenyl. The <i>Monhystera microphthalma</i> test is less sensitive than the nematode test with <i>P. revivus</i> for mercury chloride, selenium oxide, and cesium chloride. The range between the concentrations at which no toxic effects are observed and the concentrations at which 100%...

Size spectra, body width and morphotypes of intertidal nematodes: an ecological interpretation OMA
Tita, G.; Vincx, M.; Desrosiers, G..
Nematode species from three intertidal assemblages (St Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada) were studied in order to form an ecological interpretation of three allometric attributes: body width, size spectra, and morphotypes. The three assemblages were characterized by a very similar sediment grain median (Md) but different silt-clay proportions: A1 (upper-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=34.8%), A3 (mid-tidal level; Md=182 µm; silt=12.8%), and A5 (lower-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=6.8%). Silt-clay proportions were an influential factor in determining the mean nematode body width, used as a morphological discriminant between burrowing and interstitial organisms. A plot of the number of species vs the body width-classes showed two peaks: between 19.3 and 22.6 µm...

The biological production of marine suspended barite and the barium cycle in the Western Mediterranean Sea OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Lambert, C.E.; Chesselet, R.; Risler, N..
Suspended particulate barium was measured in the Western Mediterranean along 4 profiles sampled during the PHYCEMED 1 cruise in 1981. The non-terrigenous fraction of particulate barium (i.e. excess Ba; Baxs) can account for up to 96 % of the total barium. This fraction follows the barite settling and dissolution rate model we described earlier for the Atlantic Ocean, conforming barite as the carrier of excess barium. We propose that these Baxs concentrations, which are higher in the Western Mediterranean than in the overall Atlantic, may represent an adaptation of the microplankton to the high densities and density gradients of surface Mediterranean waters. A mass-balance for Ba in the Mediterranean Sea shows:...

Hatching, survival, activity and penetration efficiency of second-stage larvae of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> (Nematoda) OMA
Thomas, K.M.; Ollevier, F.P..
Hatching of eggs of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> was studied at temperatures between 5 and 30°C. Hatching occurred between 10 and 30°C and the incubation time was inversely related to temperature. Survival, spontaneous and excitatory rate of activity of 2nd-stage larvae of <i>A. crassus</i> were also affected by temperature. The percentage of larvae eaten by <i>Paracyclops fimbriatus</i> was not always influenced by the activity of the larvae. Penetration efficiency into the haemocoel of the intermediate host was highest for freshly hatched larvae and declined gradually with age. Completely non-active larvae were still able to penetrate, although penetration efficiency was lower.

Elemental composition of aircraft-sampled aerosols above the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Rojas, C.M.; Van Grieken, R.; Maenhaut, W..
During the period from September 1988 to October 1989, 23 flights were carried out over the Dutch Continental Shelf of the North Sea and a total of 108 aerosol filter samples were collected. The samples were analyzed for Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb using both particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The results from PIXE exhibited better precision and lower detection limits than those from EDXRF. Therefore the further discussion and interpretation was based on the PIXE data only. It was observed that Si, S, V, Mn, Ni, Cu and Pb were enriched with respect to the earth's crust. It was seen that winds from the sector Southeast-South contributed most significantly to...

Checklist of isopods (Crustacea: Peracarida: Isopoda) from the Eastern Tropical Pacific OMA
Espinosa-Pérez, M.D.C.; Hendrickx, M.E..
Literature dealing with isopods from the east Pacific is reviewed. Marine and brackish water species reported at least once in the Eastern Tropical Pacific zoogeographic subregion, which extends from Magdalena Bay, on the west coast of Southern Baja California, Mexico, to Paita, in northern Peru, are listed, and their ranges along the Pacific coast of America are provided. Unpublished records, based on material kept in the collections of the authors, were also considered, to modify previously published distribution ranges within the study area. A total of 124 species, belonging to 68 genera, is included in the checklist and new records or new distribution data are provided for 19 species. A list of names of species and subspecies currently recognized as...

<i>Streptocephalus sirindhornae</i>, new species of freshwater fairy shrimp (Anostraca) from Thailand OMA
Sanoamuang, L.; Murugan, G.; Weekers, P.H.H.; Dumont, H.J..
<i>Streptocephalus sirindhornae</i>, new species, the first freshwater anostracan from Thailand, is wide-spread in the northeast of the country. It is morphologically closest to the Indian species <i>S. dichotomus</i>, but a sequence analysis of its SSU rDNA gene reveals that its closest relative is in fact the Indian species-pair <i>S. dichotomus-S. simplex</i>, that it is probably a conserved member of the <i>S. dichotomus</i>-group, and that it shares some relationship with the <i>S. torvicornis</i>-group.

Onshore nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Belgium OMA
Claus, C.; Maeckelberghe, H.; De Pauw, N..
From October to April the growth of spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis semidecussata</i> in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability.
