Comparative effectiveness of two nitrogen sources for corn fertilization Phyton
Copperi,MZ; Mandolesi,ME; Cantamutto,MA; Ron,MM.
Corn has not only a high growth potential and a great capacity of biological response to suitable crop management but also may contribute to a better match of crops with environmental offer in Argentina. Nitrogen (N) fertilization must make provision for eventual N losses, and fertilization strategies must be designed so as to minimize their global incidence. The diferent quick-release N sources show similar efciencies when they are incorporated, but in surface applications, sources that contain little or no amidic N have a better performance than urea (U). The objective of this paper was to make an evaluation of corn response to N applied in V6 without incorporation, using two different solid N sources. A field experiment was carried out during 2004, in a...

Polymer-based encapsulation of Bacillus subtilis and its effect on Meloidogyne incognita in tomato Phyton
Pacheco-Aguirre,J; Ruiz-Sánchez,E; Reyes-Ramírez,A; Cristóbal-Alejo,J; Tun-Suárez,J; Borges-Gómez,L.
Antagonistic bacteria used as biological control agent may loss effectiveness at the field due to environmental factors such as UV radiation, dryness and high temperature. An inexpensive alternative to protect antagonistic bacteria against such factors is the use of microencapsulating agents. In this work, the effect of microencapsulation of Bacillus subtilis with commercial gums on their antagonistic capacity against Meloidogyne incognita was evaluated. The eficiency of the microencapsulation was verified by the difference between the initial and final concentrations of protein release. The effectiveness as antagonist was evaluated against M. incognita in tomato under greenhouse conditions. The microcapsules based on carboxymethylcellulose (MBC) and...

Influence of woody species on aerial growth of perennial grasses in semi-arid rangelands of central Argentina Phyton
Blazquez,FR; Peláez,DV; Andrioli,RJ; Elia,OR.
The interaction between woody and grass species in semi-arid rangelands of central Argentina was assessed through the evaluation of the impact of woody species on grass growth over a 2-y period. The study comprised two morpho-physiologically different woody species and two cool-season perennial grass species highly preferred by domestic livestock. The study involved the assessment of total green length (TGL) and number of green leaves (NGL) per tiller in grasses growing beneath the canopy of woody species and in open rangeland areas. Soil temperature, pH and water, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter content were estimated at the same study sites. Precipitation during the study period was also recorded. Woody species induced higher TGL of grasses...

Analysis of volatile compounds in three unifloral native Chilean honeys Phyton
Montenegro,G; Gómez,M; Casaubon,G; Belancic,A; Mujica,AM; Peña,RC.
Three unifloral honeys were identified by the pronounced presence of specific compounds by means of sensorial analysis and SPME-GC-MS. Smoky and resinous (‘propolis') odors characterized unifloral "quillay" (Quillaja saponaria) honey. "Corontillo" (Escallonia pulverulenta) honey was characterized by caramel and vanillin aromas, and "ulmo" (Eucryphia cordifolia) honey by having an anise scent with a floral jasmine note. Safranal was a useful marker for "corontillo" honey. Isophorone and cetoisophorone were the distinctive compounds of unifloral "ulmo" honey. In "quillay" honeys, megastigmatrienone, 2-p-hydroxyphenylalcohol and minor quantities of β-pinene and linalool oxide were correlated with their sensory properties such as resinous.

Bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere of a transgenic versus a conventional maize (Zea mays) Phyton
Vital-López,L; Cruz-Hernández,MA; Fernández-Dávila,S; Mendoza-Herrera,A.
Genetically modified crops could cause negative effects on bacterial communities. In this study, we compared the bacterial community structure of two maize cultivars to determine whether the transgenic cultivar exerts a negative effect on bacterial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere. Cultivars included the genetically modified maize (Zea mays), with the pat-gene conferring resistance to the herbicide glufosinate (synonym: L-phosphinothricin), and the hybrid, conventional maize. Metagenomic DNA was extracted from the rhizosphere of plants grown in a greenhouse. Single-strand conformation polymorphism, based on polymerase chain reaction amplifying a partial subunit rRNA gene was used to characterize and generate genetic profiles that corresponded to the...

The effects of tin (Sn) additions on the growth of spinach plants Phyton
Müller,FL; Cyster,LF; Raitt,LM; Aalbers,J.
An increase in bioavailable tin in the environment could result in bioaccumulation thereof in agricultural crops, and therefore, have adverse health consequences on humans that eat these crops. The aims of the current study were thus to assess the uptake of Sn by spinach plants, and the subsequent efects this will have on the uptake of Na, Zn, K, Ca, and Mg as well as the growth of spinach plants. Spinach plants were grown in sand culture and received tin at concentrations of 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 mg/L along with a nutrient solution. The uptake of tin at detectible concentrations only occurred at the highest concentrations (2 and 20 mg/L), and it was mostly retained in the roots of the plants. Tin additions also resulted in no visual toxicity symptoms, and...

Hyperhydricity control of in vitro shoots of Turbinicarpus valdezianus (Möller) GL & F Phyton
García Osuna,HT; Benavides Mendoza,A; Escobedo Bocardo,L; Villarreal Quintanilla,JA; Cornejo Oviedo,E.
Turbinicarpus valdezianus is a species under special protection, according to the current law NOM-059-ECOL-2010. It spreads preferably through shoot proliferation in vitro. A common problem associated with the propagation of this species by tissue culture is the hyperhydricity or excess of water accumulation in the tissues of shoots explants. The literature on this topic indicates that such response is related with oxidative stress. Because of this, the effects of inhibitors of the gibberellins [paclobutrazol (PBZ) and calcium prohexadione (PCa)] and salicylic (SA) and benzoic acids (BA) were tested to diminish the hiperhydrycity of the sprouts, which was measured after twelve weeks of study initiation. The treatment with PBZ (3.4 x...
