Variation in the number of ungues in Ameronothrus schneideri (Oudemans), an oribatid mite Naturalis
Boelé, F.E.; Hammen, L. van der.
In the present paper an analysis is made of the variation in the number of ungues in the claws of Ameronothrus schneideri (Oudemans), an Oribatid mite. This variation is attributable to the regression of the two lateral ungues which are completely suppressed in the course of evolution (they are either present or absent). The laws of this numerical evolution (it is a so-called vertitional evolution) appear to be statistical, and do not determine individual events precisely (as the laws of the particles in quantum mechanics). In a population, each of the claws has a probability of manifestation. The variation of this probability of manifestation shows a very interesting geographical pattern which is as yet difficult to explain. Various correlations of the...

Host relations and DNA reveal a cryptic gall crab species (Crustacea: Decapoda: Cryptochiridae) associated with mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) Naturalis
Meij, S.E.T. van der.
Mushroom corals of the Indo-West Pacific Fungiidae (Scleractinia) provide habitats for a rich associated fauna, including three species of gall crabs (Cryptochiridae). During the course of the present study gall crabs were sampled from many different fungiid hosts. Based on this ‘reversed’ approach - by studying coral symbionts from a host perspective - a previously unnoticed host specificity pattern was detected. The sampling of gall crab fauna per host coral combined with molecular analyses of H3 nDNA, 16S and COI mtDNA revealed a cryptic gall crab species closely related to Fungicola fagei. This new species, described hereafter as Fungicola syzygia sp. nov., is predominantly associated with the mushroom coral genera Cycloseris and Pleuractis, whereas...

С. S. Rafinesque as a carcinologist : an annotated compilation of the information on Crustacea contained in the works of that author Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
I. INTRODUCTION In the last tens of years more and more attention has been paid to the much neglected and ignored publications written by the eccentric early American naturalist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. Until now, however, Rafinesque's work in the field of carcinology has received but little attention from modern authors. In 1905 Ortmann (1905, p. 107) pointed out that the name Astacus limosus Rafinesque, 1817, is older than the name Astacus affinis Say, 1817, for the same species, and that consequently the former name has to be used. In the same year Richardson (1905, p. 10) replaced the invalid generic name Ligia Fabricius, 1798, by Ligyda Rafinesque, 1815. M. J. Rathbun (1937, p. 63) substituted the generic name Thelxiope Rafinesque, 1814, for the...

Penaeid prawns of Ceylon (Crustacea Decapoda, Penaeidae) Naturalis
Bruin, G.H.P. de.
INTRODUCTION Penaeid prawns form the basis of flourishing fisheries in South America, East Africa, India, Ceylon, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Australia. In some of these countries surveys are in progress to determine new prawn resources in the sea, since the demand for these crustaceans is unsatisfied. The scientific study of these animals has progressed considerably in most of these areas. Studies in the Indian region can be referred to in the works of Alcock, 1905, 1906; Bate, 1888; De Man, 1888, 1911; Henderson, 1893; Kemp, 1915 and Miers, 1884. Some of these authors have made passing references to the species present in Ceylon waters, but the only special study of the Ceylon species is that of Pearson (1905). Pearson's article, however, refers only to...

Discovery of a new genus of tanaidacean (Crustacea: Tanaidacea: Mirandotanaidae) found associated with a deep-sea terebellid polychaete Naturalis
Suárez-Morales, E.; Londoño-Mesa, M.; Heard, R.W..
Only one species of Tanaidacea, Expina typica, has been hitherto reported as an endosymbiont; it was recovered from the body cavity of deep-sea holothurians. During a survey of the deepsea benthic community in the Florida Straits off the Bahamas, Terebellatanais floridanus, a new genus and species of a tanaidomorphan tanaidacean was recovered at a depth of 545 m from the oral cavity of the terebellid polychaete Biremis blandi. Terebellatanais gen. nov. is tentatively assigned to the family Mirandotanaidae, as it appears to have affinities with Mirandotanais and Pooreotanais but also with Expina. It is distinguished from these genera by a unique combination of characters, including four antennular and antennal articles, a naked endite of the maxillipedal...

Die Gattung Neopisosoma Haig, 1960 im tropischen Westatlantik, mit der Beschreibung von Neopisosoma neglectum spec. nov. und Neopisosoma orientale spec. nov. (Crustacea: Anomura: Porcellanidae) Naturalis
Werding, B..
Neopisosoma angustifrons (Benedict, 1901) and N. curacaoense (Schmitt, 1924) are described; for both species an extension of range is reported. N. neglectum spec. nov. from Colombia and the Lesser Antilles and N. orientale spec. nov. from Trinidad are described. The status of Neopisosoma as a distinct genus probably will have to be reconsidered.

The authorship of the names of species of Crustacea Decapoda published in 1835 By S. Hailstone and J. O. Westwood Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The amateur naturalist S. Hailstone, who lived in Hastings, England, was much interested in the Crustacea of his area and made collections of these. At several occasions in 1834 and 1835 he sent observations on interesting specimens, often together with the material, to J. C. Loudon, the editor of "The Magazine of Natural History, and Journal of Zoology, Botany, Mineralogy, Geology, and Meteorology", one of the forerunners of the well known "Annals and Magazine of Natural History". Hailstone often accompanied his notes with requests for identification of the species, which he had either not at all or only tentatively identified. Loudon passed Hailstone's notes and the material (if the latter was available) on to J. O. Westwood, the well known entomologist,...

Historical Notes on Artemia salina (L.) Naturalis
Kuenen, D.J..
Although an abundant literature exists on Artemia salina, there are still interesting facts in the first history of the discovery of this remarkable animal and in the first study of its habits, which seem to be now forgotten. It is generally considered that Rackett (1812) was the first to give a drawing of Artemia salina, accompanying a short paper on the animal, and he himself states this to be the fact. It is, however, not true, as Schlosser's famous original description was illustrated in the french edition (1756). The drawing is an excellent one and much better than the one Rackett gave (fig. 1). As Gautier remarks in an additional note to Schlosser's letter, the first publication in 1755 was not accompanied by a picture. The drawing, which dates from...

Les processidae (Crustacea Decapoda Natantia) des eaux Européennes Naturalis
Nouvel, H.; Holthuis, L.B..

The anatomy of the king crab Hapalogaster mertensii Brandt, 1850 (Anomura: Paguroidea: Hapalogastridae): new insights into the evolutionary transformation of hermit crabs into king crabs Naturalis
Keiler, J.; Richter, S.; Wirkner, C.S..
The emergence of king crabs from a hermit crab-like ancestor is one of the most curious events in decapod evolution. King crabs comprise two taxa, Lithodidae and Hapalogastridae, and while lithodids have formed the focus of various anatomical studies, the internal anatomy of hapalogastrids has never been studied although this group might represent a more ancestral morphological condition within king crabs than lithodids do. To better understand the evolutionary transformation of pagurid-like hermit crabs into king crabs, we studied the hemolymph vascular system and associated organs of representatives of Hapalogaster and present here the first micro-computer tomography data pertaining to the internal anatomy of hapalogastrids. Our results for...
