Lygosoma (Sphenomorphus) florense barbouri Dunn (Pl. VI fig. 1) Sphenomorphus florense barbouri Dunn, Amer. Mus. Nov., no. 288, 1927, p. 5, and Dunn, in: Burden, Dragon Lizards of Komodo, 1927, p. 203. 1 ♂, Noil Toko, Timor, 1937, leg. P. F. van West, Mus. Leiden, reg. no. 7033. 5 ♂ ♂, 6 ♀ ♀, Timor, leg. Müller & Macklot, Mus. Leiden, reg. no. 2535. 3 ♂ ♂, 7 ♀♀,2??, Samao, leg. Müller & Macklot, Mus. Leiden, reg. no. 2534. These specimens are provisionally referred to the subspecies barbouri, described by Dunn from Wetar .Id. The dark colour of the throat apparently is a character dependent on age; with four exceptions all specimens of a head and body length above 51 mm have black throats or at least some black spots on the throat. Of the four... |

Hypapophyses are reported to be present on the anterior precaudal vertebrae of representatives of all snake families, except the Typhlopidae, Leptotyphlopidae, and Uropeltidae. The processes occur on all precaudal vertebrae in the Acrochordidae, Colubridae (auct.), Elapidae, Viperidae, and two subfamilies of the Boidae, the Bolyerinae and Tropidophinae. Among the numerous genera of the Colubridae caudal extent of the presence of the hypapophyses is variable, even within a genus or species. Cope (1864) associated hypapophyses on the posterior precaudal vertebrae with the Homalopsinae. In the years following he utilized the character to distinguish the Homalopsinae (1886), the Colubrinae (1887), the Natricidae (1893); in his last classification (1900), Cope... |

A re-examination of old specimens of the genus Atractus, preserved in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie resulted in the discovery of syntypes of Brachyorrhos badius F. Boie, B. flammigerus F. Boie, B. schach F. Boie and Rabdosoma torquatus Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril. Lectotypes for all these species are designated. B. flammigerus and B. schach have been considered synonyms of Atractus badius since 1837. This proved to be wrong, they turned out to be valid taxa exhibiting differences in scale counts, body size, hemipenial morphology and colour pattern. Among recently collected material from Surinam the recently described A. zidoki Gasc & Rodrigues was discovered and described on the basis of seven specimens. Both A. latifrons (Günther) and A.... |

For a large part the data in the present paper are based on manuscript notes in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, assembled by Brongersma himself; they form only a brief account of his scientific achievements. Efforts to completeness were only made in the composition of the List of Publications; here besides the scientific papers those with popular contents are listed. Thanks are due to Dr. W. Vervoort and to Dr. M. Boeseman for constructive remarks. Leo Daniël Brongersma was born on May 17th, 1907, at Bloemendaal (province of North-Holland); here he attended elementary school, while he went to high school in the neighbouring town of Haarlem. From 1925 to 1931 he studied zoology, botany and geology at the Municipal University of... |

The characters which serve to distinguish the Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica) from the Rhinoceros Viper (B. nasicornis) are examined in relation to a subadult female from Dabocrom, Ghana, which displays characters of both species. It is more like B. nasicornis than B. gabonica but the admixture of B. gabonica characters is probably the result of interbreeding. |

During routine curatorial duties some specimens of Proceratophrys boiei (Wied) were encountered in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. Upon comparison with the original description one of them proved to be one of Wied's original two specimens. It is here selected as lectotype of Ceratophrys Boiei Wied. |

Two species of the genus Idiopholis Mocq. have been described of which I. collaris Mocq. is said to differ from I. everetti Shelf, chiefly in possessing a small azygous shield between the internasals, and in having a yellowishwhite collar (De Rooij, 1917, p. 142). Both species apparently are very rare. During his expeditions in Central Borneo (1894-1900) Dr. A. W. Nieuwenhuis on the Upper Mahakkam river collected two small snakes which must be referred to this genus, and which agree with I. collaris in having a whitish collar, while they agree with I. everetti in lacking the azygous shield between the internasals. As these specimens also agree with the description of I. collaris as given by De Rooij (1917, p. 142, fig. 58) with regard to the relative... |

In a revision of West African Mabuya species in 1974, I described Mabuya polytropis occidentalis from Ghana and Liberia. Recently Dr. R. I. Crombie kindly drew my attention to the fact that by doing so, I had created a junior homonym of Euprepes occidentalis W. Peters, 1867, currently considered a valid species of Mabuya, occurring in Southwestern Africa (Fitzsimmons, 1943). This is true and obviously due to gross negligence on my part. Therefore the West African M. polytropis occidentalis Hoogmoed, 1974 is hereby renamed M. polytropis paucisquamis, in reference to the low numbers of scales in this subspecies as compared to the nominal subspecies. |

Two species of the little known genus Osornophryne are described from the Atlantic (Amazonian) versant of the Andes in Ecuador. O. guacamayo spec. nov. occurs at 2100 m, has well developed cranial ridges, rather peculiar feet with toes IV and V of about equal length and much longer than the others. It is rather gaudily patterned with black and yellow. O. antisana spec. nov. occurs at 3600 m and has a pointed snout, indistinct cranial ridges and is rather drably coloured. The single available adult male has a cloacal tube that runs down the back of the thighs and opens ventrally. It is speculated that this peculiar structure is indicative of internal fertilization. It is concluded that inguinal amplexus in this genus is not a primitive, but an advanced... |

Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have... |

INTRODUCTION Currently, New Guinea Stegonotus with 17 scales at midbody and divided subcaudals are identified as S. modestus. But this will not account for the disparity in dentition within "S. modestus", nor the colour differences even at one locality, nor that in East and West Sepik Districts there are three quite distinct "S. modestus": (1) a large form with high ventral count and high tooth count; (2) a small form with low ventral count but high tooth count; and (3) a medium-sized form with high ventral count but low tooth count (fig. 1). The material in the British Museum and American Museum of Natural History indicates that scale count does not correctly identify the species, and that such features as dentition, form of the palatine bone, scale pits,... |

INTRODUCTION The scincid lizards of the genus Tribolonotus are generally dull-coloured, armoured, thigmothermic, cryptozoic lizards with several unique features in their morphology and biology. These features include the possession of abdominal glands and volar pores, a vestigial left oviduct, the production of a single egg or young (in all species so far investigated) and an ability to vocalize (in at least one species) otherwise unknown within the family Scincidae. As a result of two recent papers (Zweifel, 1966; Greer & Parker, 1968) the taxonomy of the genus is firmly based, while many aspects of the biology and ecology of various species have been documented. In the course of field work in New Guinea in 1969, as part of Program Β of the 1969... |

Since the 1950s, Sundaland (Borneo, Java, Sumatra and their surrounding islands) was thought to be inhabited by a single slow loris species, the greater slow loris Nycticebus coucang. Early taxonomies as well as recent morphological and genetic studies, however, point to at least three species native to this region: N. coucang, N. menagensis, and N. javanicus. In the light of this taxonomy, all Sundaland slow lorises, previously considered Least Threatened, have been listed as Vulnerable or Endangered. Of particular concern is the fact that slow lorises are the most common protected primate species in the rampant Southeast Asian pet trade, resulting in their recent transferral to CITES Appendix I precluding all international commercial trade. Due to lack... |

An interesting collection of subfossil animal remains from cave deposits in the island of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) was brought together by Dr. Th. L. Verhoeven. The collection includes numerous remains of mammals (Hooijer, 1957; Hooijer, in Verhoeven, 1958, pp. 262-263), as well as some vertebrae of snakes, and fragments of the skull of a Varanus species. The deposits also contain evidence of a mesolithic flake and blade industry (Verhoeven, 1952, 1953; Van Heekeren, 1957, p. 107); their age is holocene (Hooijer, 1957, p. 299: "definitely post-Pleistocene"). The Varanus remains are described in the present paper; they belong to a new species; which I dedicate to Dr. D. A. Hooijer in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the knowledge of the... |

The origin and evolution of the crown-group of turtles (Cryptodira + Pleurodira) is one of the most interesting topics in turtle evolution, second perhaps only to the phylogenetic position of turtles among amniotes. The present contribution focuses on the former problem, exploring the phylogenetic relationships of extant and extinct turtles based on the most comprehensive phylogenetic dataset of morphological and molecular data analyzed to date. Parsimony analyses were conducted for different partitions of data (molecular and morphological) and for the combined dataset. In the present analysis, separate analyses of the molecular data always retrieve Pleurodira allied to Trionychia. Separate analysis of the morphological dataset, by contrast, depicts a more... |

Taxonomic and natural history data are presented on eight species of Atractus from the Manaus region, central Amazonia, Brazil, namely: A. alphonsehogei, A. latifrons, A, major, A. poeppigi, A. schach, A. snethlageae, A. torquatus, and A. trilineatus. Four of these species are recorded for the first time for the region, which indicates the scarcity of snake collections in central Amazonia. Since long there has been a dispute whether in the Netherlands there occur one or two species of green frogs of the genus Rana. There has never been any doubt concerning the presence of Rana esculenta Linnaeus, a species widely distributed throughout the country (Van de Bund, 1964, 1968). The first to mention Rana ridibunda ridibunda Pallas from the Netherlands were Van Kampen & Heimans ( 1927), who observed that they saw a specimen of Rana esculenta var. ridibunda from Den Horn in the province of Groningen. Unfortunately they did not state where the specimen was deposited and no such specimen could be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH) in Leiden or in the Instituut voor Taxonomische Zoölogie in Amsterdam.
