The Adequacy of Speculation in Agricultural Futures Markets: Too Much of a Good Thing? AgEcon
Sanders, Dwight R.; Irwin, Scott H.; Merrin, Robert P..
The objective of this report is to re-visit the “adequacy of speculation” debate in agricultural futures markets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission makes available the positions held by index funds and other large traders in their Commitment of Traders reports. The results suggest that after an initial surge from early 2004 through mid-2005, index fund positions have stabilized as a percent of total open interest. Traditional speculative measures do not show any material changes or shifts over the sample period. In most markets, the increase in long speculative positions was equaled or surpassed by an increase in short hedging. So, even after adjusting speculative indices for index fund positions, values are within the historical ranges reported in...

Optimal Grazing Termination Date for Dual-Purpose Winter Wheat Production AgEcon
Taylor, Karen W.; Epplin, Francis M.; Brorsen, B. Wade; Fieser, Brian G.; Horn, Gerald W..
Dual-purpose winter wheat (fall-winter forage plus grain) production is an important economic enterprise in the southern Great Plains. Grazing termination to enable grain production is a critical decision. The objective is to determine the optimal grazing termination date for dual-purpose wheat. The value of knowing the occurrence of first hollow stem (FHS), a wheat growth threshold for grazing termination, is also determined. Results indicate that for most price situations grazing should be terminated at or before FHS. Marginal wheat returns from extended grazing were negative and the value of FHS information ranges from $1.50 to $10 per acre.

Results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model for the 2010 Agricultural Real Estate Assessment AgEcon
Aakre, Dwight G.; Haugen, Ronald H..
This report summarizes the 2010 results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model. The model is used annually to estimate average land values by county, based on the value of production from cropland and non-cropland. The county land values developed from this procedure form the basis for the 2010 valuation of agricultural land for real estate tax assessment. The average all agricultural land value from this analysis is multiplied by the total acres of agricultural land on the county abstract to determine each county’s total agricultural land value for taxation purposes. The State Board of Equalization compares this value with the total value assessed to agricultural property in each county. Each county is required by state statute to assess a total value...

ESTIMATION OF CROP YIELD VARIATION AND ITS USE IN FARM FINANCIAL PLANNING AgEcon
Anibal, Mark E..
Actual farm records were used to evaluate variation of crop yields for corn, wheat, and soybeans grown in Michigan. The assumption of yields being normally distribute with independent and constant variance was tested for all farms, farms characterized by soil groupings, and individual farms of a selected soil group. Sufficient evidence was not found to reject the assumption that yield variation is normally distributed with independent and constant variance when all farms were grouped together. Grouping farms by soil potential showed strong support for yields being independent and normally distributed. The assumption of constant variance had strong support for wheat, but was weak for corn. Analysis of individual farms for a selected soil group,...

EXTENSÃO RURAL, AGROECOLOGIA E INOVAÇÃO NA AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR DO VALE DO JEQUITINHONHA1 AgEcon
Noronha, Alini Fernanda Bicalho; Ribeiro, Eduardo Magalhaes; Augusto, Helder dos Anjos.
Agroforest systems (AFS) are agricultural techniques that combine woody arboreal species (fruit-bearing and/or wood producing) with agricultural production. AFSs have the capacity to make degraded areas productive, preserving at the same time natural resources and providing food, wood, firewood and diverse vegetable essences. Since 1994 the Centro de Agricultura alternativa Vicente Nica -CAV (Vicente Nica Alternative Agriculture Center) and a group of 32 farmers/experimentators practice and divulge AFS in the Alto Jequitinhonha area, trying to develop a conservationist production alternative. This article analyzes the effects of this experience on rural extension, investigating how the practice of AFS, the mobilization of rural communities and...

Application de la Programmation Stochastique Discrète à l’évaluation de l’impact de la contrainte de crédit sur le revenu et la production agricoles dans la basse vallée de l’Ouémé AgEcon
Kpadonou, Rivaldo A.B.; Adegbola, Patrice Ygue; Tovignan, Silvere D..

Basic Cooperative Principles and Their Relationship to Selected Practices AgEcon
Dunn, John R..
This paper describes a set of basic cooperative principles adopted in a recent Agricultural Cooperative Service study and how these principles relate to various cooperative business practices and issues facing U.S. cooperative organizations. Three principles relating use of a cooperative to ownership, control, and distribution of benefits are outlined. The relationship of these principles to a number of topics, including cooperative membership and control, differential treatment programs, and cooperative finance, is examined.

Credit Risk Migration Analysis Focused on Farm Business Characteristics and Business Cycles AgEcon
Katchova, Ani L.; Nam, Sangjeong.
We applied the migration approach to credit scoring measurement to determine how ratings, focused on farm characteristics such as farm size, age, and farm business type, change across business cycles. The empirical results from analyzing migration matrices using data from FBFM suggest that old, large and grain farms are more likely to upgrade their classes, while young, small, livestock farms are likely to downgrade. The migration matrices for each characteristic across the business cycles show that all farm businesses (except small, livestock farms) have a tendency to deteriorate during the recession cycles regardless of their characteristics.

Problems of milk quota management in accounting system their effect on property status of enterprises AgEcon
Kiss, Arpad.
According to both international and Hungarian accounting standards milk quota shall be capitalised among the assets of the enterprises. It is necessary for the implementation of the activity; its value can be defined based on market processes and regulations of the authorities. Due to the possibility of trading quotas on the market it would be the only solution to avoid the recognition of requested and purchased quotas on different values in the accounting system. Considering the total amount of quotas a HUF 40 billion increase of assets could be reached by the enterprises in milk production, if quotas were recognized among the intangible assets. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey the majority of enterprises did not perform the valuation tasks,...

IMPACTS OF CHAPTER 12 AND LENDER LIABILITY SUITS ON BANKERS' PROPENSITY TO LEND IN WESTERN ARKANSAS AgEcon
Dixon, Bruce L.; Raub, Kristin M.; Flaccus, Janet A..
The recent availability of Chapter 12 bankruptcy and the more frequent use of lender liability suits by borrowers are factors that may be adversely affecting the supply of agricultural loans. An experiment using hypothetical loan applications was undertaken involving 34 banks in western Arkansas. Responses were used to estimate the impacts of these legal procedures on banks' lending behavior. The estimated models indicate Chapter 12 is not a significant factor in the loan approval process. Lender liability has marginal significance in lowering the probability of granting an intermediate term loan.

Impact of Supermarket Procurement System on Farmers' Credit Access AgEcon
Marcoul, Philippe; Veyssiere, Luc.
In developing countries, modern production contracts offered by supermarkets or agro-export firms entail a loan component under the form of input advances. Like traditional moneylenders, supermarkets want to make sure that this investment is not diverted. However, unlike moneylenders, supermarkets do care about the attributes of the product (form, quality, food safety, etc.). Whether such attributes are present in the harvested product is largely influenced by the advice and the extension services received by the farmer. We built a financial contracting model where we show that supermarkets, choosing to forgo specialization, optimally delegate to a multi-tasking agent both the monitoring and the advisory missions. This contract is shown to potentially...

A marketing-finance approach linking contracts in agricultural channels to shareholder value AgEcon
Pennings, Joost M.E.; Wansink, Brian; Hoffmann, Arvid O.I..
A conceptual marketing-finance framework is proposed which links channel contracting in agriculture and the use of financial facilitating services (e.g., financial derivatives) to (shareholder) value creation. The framework complements existing literature by explicitly including channel contract relationships as market-based assets that can be managed to reduce cash flow volatility and hence increase shareholder value. We show how financial facilitating services (e.g., derivatives) can be used to complement the cash flows components of channel contract relationships thereby further reducing the risk adjusted cost of capital and improving shareholder value. In a field study of producers, wholesalers, and processors, in the potato and meat industry the...

Pakistan Agricultural Export Performance in the Light of Trade Liberalization and Economic Reforms AgEcon
Malik, Nadeem.
The objective of this paper is to see the impacts of economic reforms and trade liberalisation policies on agricultural export performance of Pakistan. The major purpose is to examine the effects of both domestic supply-side factors and world demand on agricultural export performance. Four indicators of economic reforms and trade liberalisation policies are considered namely competitiveness, diversification, openness and world demand for agricultural products; these indicators capture the effects of both domestic supply-side policy reforms and world market potential. The effects are analysed in dynamic term both in the long-run and short-run, using co integration and vector error correction (VECM) methods. The empirical results suggest that agricultural...

An Empirical Investigation of Interproduct Relationships Between Domestic and Imported Seafood in the U.S. AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study seeks to identify interproduct relationships between domestic catfish and a representative selection of imported seafood. In doing so, this study uses multivariate cointegration and structural analyses. Multivariate cointegration analysis suggests that six imported seafood product groupings form a common market with domestic catfish. Structural analysis reveals that 1) domestic and imported catfish are net and gross quantity substitutes; 2) domestic catfish and imported seafood are normal goods; 3) six imported seafood products are identified as gross quantity substitutes for domestic catfish; and 4) according to the derived Allais coefficients, interaction intensities of imported seafood for domestic catfish (from greatest to least) are as...
