Le controle chimique et biologique de Lymnaea truncatula Mueller. Etude des effets a long terme ArchiMer
Rondelaud, D.
The treated habitats have not been recolonized by Lymnaea truncatula . Four aquatic snail species showed an increase in their numbers: L. glabra in the stations of Haute-Vienne, L. glabra, Physa acuta, P. hypnorum and Planorbis rotundatus in the habitats of Indre. The numbers of L. glabra and P. acuta reached their maximum on the third year and decreased thereafter; those of P. hypnorum and P. rotundatus slightly increased from the fourth or the fifth years treatment. The colonization of L. truncatula habitats was incomplete and did not reach over 50% of the surface for L. glabra and P. acuta , 20% for P. hypnorum and P. rotundatus . The bivalve Pisidium casertanum did not recolonize treated habitats. There were no modifications in the numbers of...

Flight activity of Sitophilus oryzae (L) and Sitophilus zeamais Motsch (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and its relationship with susceptibility to insecticides Neotropical Entomology
Vásquez-Castro,Javier A; Baptista,Gilberto C De; Trevizan,Luiz R P; Gadanha Jr,Casimiro D.
Insect-pest mobility can influence insect susceptibility to the insecticides used to control them. The objective of this work was to evaluate the flight activity of Sitophilus oryzae (L) and Sitophilus zeamais Motsch populations reared on corn and wheat grains, and its relationship with insecticide susceptibility. Unsexed adult insects with ages between 10 and 20 days were placed on a plastic tray. A 40-watt incandescent light bulb was positioned at a 50 cm height relative to the tray. Flight activity was evaluated during 30 min. In the LC50 estimation bioassays, the insects were exposed to dry residues of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion and of the pyrethroid insecticide esfenvalerate on the internal surface of glass vials. Mortality was...

Insecticide resistance in populations of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Santos,VC; Siqueira,HAA de; Silva,JE da; Farias,MJDC de.
The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) has a great economic importance in Brassicaceae crops in many parts of the world. Recurrent infestations of this pest in growing areas of Pernambuco state, Brazil, have led farmers to frequently spray their crops with insecticides. However, control failures by several insecticides have been alleged by farmers. The objective of this study was to check whether resistance to insecticides could explain these control failures in P. xylostella. Populations of P. xylostella from Pernambuco were collected between January and April 2009. The resistance ratios of P. xylostella populations were compared among five different active ingredients: abamectin, methomyl, lufenuron, indoxacarb, and diafenthiuron by leaf dipping...

Madaleno,Leonardo L.; Ravaneli,Gisele C.; Presotti,Leandro E.; Mutton,Miguel A.; Fernandes,Odair A.; Mutton,Márcia J.R..
Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) is an important pest in Latin America and causes significant reduction in sugarcane productivity. There is no information regarding the effect of this pest on the quality of cane juice used for sugar and alcohol production. This work aimed at evaluating the quality of sugarcane juice from plants attacked by spittlebugs. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with 15 replications, and comprised two treatments: control and chemical treatment with thiamethoxam. An average of 9.2 ± 4.44 spittlebug nymphs m-1 were found in the plots prior to insecticide application. Nymphs were counted 18, 35, 55, and 82 days after the initial sampling (december/2003). During the mid growing season (July 2004), the juice was...

Abamectin resistance in Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae): selection, cross-resistance and stability of resistance Neotropical Entomology
Sato,Mário E.; Silva,Marcos Z. da; Raga,Adalton; Souza Filho,Miguel F. de.
Studies on artificial laboratory selections with abamectin, cross-resistance relationships, and stability of resistance were carried out with Tetranychus urticae Koch to provide basic information for an abamectin resistance management program. Selections for resistance and susceptibility to abamectin were performed in a population of T. urticae, collected from a commercial strawberry field in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. After five selections for resistance and five selections for susceptibility, susceptible (S) and resistant (R) strains of T. urticae to abamectin were obtained. The resistance ratio (R/S) at the LC50 reached 342-fold values. The toxicity of eight acaricides was evaluated in the R and S strains, observing significant differences (at...

Effect of fungicides on black spot control in maté PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Grigoletti Júnior, Albino; Auer, Celso Garcia.
Black-spot is the main disease in maté (Ilex paraguariensis), causing serious damages and losses in nurseries and in the field. Frequently the chemical control is used, even so these products are not registered nor tested about its efficiency. The purpose of this study was to investigate and select some fungicides to control black-spot in maté. After In vitro and in vivo tests were performed in seedlings, “benomyl” and “captan” have presented the best efficiency when compared with others commercial products.

Neotropical brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) resistance to methamidophos in Paraná, Brazil PAB
Sosa-Gómez,Daniel Ricardo; Silva,Jovenil José da.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the soybean neotropical brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) resistance to methamidophos through laboratory bioassays. Bioassays were carried out using populations of adults and nymphs of Euschistus heros in the last instar collected in soybean crops in Paraná State. Highest frequencies of genotypes resistant to methamidophos were observed in Alvorada do Sul, Toledo and Nova Santa Rosa, PR. Populations from Bela Vista do Paraíso, Araruna, Campo Mourão, Mariluz, Cascavel, São João do Ivaí, and Mamboré were more susceptible to methamidophos. However, an increase on resistant genotypes in this locations cannot be discarded.

Asian soybean rust in Brazil: past, present, and future PAB
Godoy,Cláudia Vieira; Seixas,Claudine Dinali Santos; Soares,Rafael Moreira; Marcelino-Guimarães,Franscismar Correa; Meyer,Maurício Conrado; Costamilan,Leila Maria.
Abstract: Asian soybean rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is the most severe disease of the crop and can cause yield losses of up to 90%. The disease was first reported in Brazil in 2001. Epidemics of the disease are common in the country, where the fungus can survive year-round. Regulatory measures to reduce the inoculum between seasons and avoid late-season soybean have been adopted to manage the disease. Disease control has relied mainly on chemical control, but a lower sensibility of the fungus to fungicides has been reported in Brazil. Major-resistance genes have been mapped and incorporated into the cultivars. With the reduced efficacy of the fungicides, the adoption of integrated measures to control the disease will be important for...

Cultivar response to fungicide application in relation to rice blast control, productivity and sustainability PAB
Prabhu,Anne Sitarama; Filippi,Marta Cristina; Zimmermann,Francisco José Pfeilsticker.
Four field trials were conducted, from 1995 to 1997, with the objective of studying the response of four upland cultivars to foliar fungicide application in relation to panicle blast control, grain yield and sustainability. Differential disease control and yield response of cultivars to fungicide treatment were obtained. Losses in grain yield of cultivars IAC 202, Caiapó, Rio Paranaíba and Araguaia due to panicle blast were 44.8%, 27.4%, 24.4% and 18.2%, respectively. Two applications of tricyclazole or benomyl controlled panicle blast, as indicated by lower values of disease progress curve and relative panicle blast severity, and increased grain yield of the cultivar IAC 202. The losses in 100 panicle grain weight and grain yield were significantly...

Response of Three Chloris elata Populations to Herbicides Sprayed in Pre- and Post-Emergence Planta Daninha
CORREIA,N.M.; RESENDE,Í..
ABSTRACT: In agricultural areas of Brazil, where there is no establishment of cover crops in the off-season and in fruit orchards, an increase in Chloris elata infestations, syn. Chloris polydactyla, has been observed. With the purpose to evaluate the response of three populations (Itaberaí - GO, Matão - SP e Jaboticabal - SP) of C. elata to herbicides sprayed before and after emergence, four experiments were conducted. In the first one, the differential tolerance of three C. elata populations to the herbicide glyphosate (0, 0.18, 0.36, 0.72, 0.96, 1.44, 2.88, 5.76 and 11.52 kg a.e. ha-1) was studied. In the other experiments, the control of the three populations by herbicides applied in pre-emergence (clomazone, diclosulam, flumioxazin, isoxaflutole,...
