The velvet swimming crab Necora puber, commonly found on the French coast was an important resource for inshore fishermen of the Mor-Braz sea in Southern Brittany before the production collapsed in 1985. Although there are still many uncertainties as to the reasons for this, we note that the collapse took place after a significant ecological imbalance which locally caused massive mortality of many marine organisms in 1982. Without being obviously linked to the former point, mortality due to pathological causes was observed in velvet swimming crabs. Seeing the lack of general knowledge about these crabs, this study was designed to acquire data about its fishery and its biology. The first part focused on fleet, fishing effort and yield trends in the...

Bacher, Cedric.
The trophic relationship between a population of cultivated oysters and potential food was modeled in Marennes-Oleron Bay. Coupling the transport process of particulate matter with assimilation by a population of oysters was achieved through a box mode!. Transport between boxes was based on a mass conservation equation. Parameters were derived from volumes of the boxes, tidal movements and residual 110ws between boxes, and were computed from a numerical hydrodynamical model. Consumption, assimilation and respiration terms were put into an energetic budget equation which enabled simulation of growth. A result of the model was the variability of growth along an axis from North to South, which was related to the oysters' accumulated consumption of food....

Rodriguez, Julien.
The objective of this study is to explain the decrease in mussel production, along the French coasts of Atlantic and the English Channel, through existing data and additional inquiries. This decrease in 2010 and 2011 had two components : a growth deficit and losses of mussels, due to detachment and mortality. Both inter-annual and geographic differences in rearing yields seem to be linked to phytoplankton abundance and turbidity. In 2011, severe droughts have impacted the level of rivers effluents to marine, limiting nutrients inputs. In 2010, frequent winds from east seem to have maintained the phytoplankton blooms away from the coasts. Detachment and mortalities of mussels might be due to physiological stress or weakening linked to poor environmental...

Targeted fishing of the edible crab Cancer pagurus has progressively replaced that of overfished lobster and spiny lobster stocks. Over the past few years it has become a significant activity for small-scale fishing vessels from various harbours on the Channel and the Atlantic French coast. Official figures show that national landings amounted to 10,000 tonnes in 1980. In spite of this fishery being recent, drops in yield in some areas have brought about changes in the way it is exploited, with more distant fishing grounds and redeployments. This doctoral thesis study was conducted in relation with the Scientific and Technical Institute of Maritime Fisheries (ISTPM), contributing to the implementation of a rational edible crab management policy....

Littaye-mariette, Anne; Mazurie, Joseph.
Since 1989, an homogeneous Crassostrea gigas oyster stock has been distributed once a year on several rearing sites in Brittany (3 populations per site). The main quantitative and qualitative growth descriptors, which reflect water quality effects during the monitoring period, are estimated at the end of each year. The 1989-1992 analysis prompted us to describe various growth responses correlated to biotops: oyster production in open areas influenced by oceanic waters was fairly constant in quality, including size and Polydora sp. infestation. In contrast, oysters in estuarine areas, partly affected by eutrophication (e.g., Aber Benoît, Pen Bé), or with a low carrying capacity, were characterized by weight and Polydora sp. infestation heterogeneity. These...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
For a few years, we have witnessed the rapid development of Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve) culture on the Atlantic coast, and especially in the Charente Maritime region. However, a number of unknown variables still exist in order to optimize oyster farms and improve their benefits. In this respect, studies have been carried out since 1975 by the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne in Tudy Island, in the Kermoor pond, in order to determine: the consequence of the immersion size on their growth, the optimal seeding period, and the survival rate. Moreover, other studies aimed to significantly reduce the production cost, focused on pre-growth length. These studies correspond to a specific environment (i.e. the semi-closed Kermoor pond)....

RESCO - Réseau d'observations Conchylicoles : Campagne 2013 ArchiMer
Fleury, Elodie.
The French network RESCO was developed in 2009, following the widespread mortalities in French oysters stocks of Crassostrea gigas that killed a majority of young cultivated oysters in summer 2008. The main objective of this network was to develop a tool of estimation of the mortalities at national scale, through a standardized monitoring of sentinel oysters In 2013, similar batches of spat and 18 month old oysters from different origins were deployed in thirteen sites located all along the French coasts to measure the spatial and temporal evolution of the mortality and growth rates. At the same time, the program provides a high-frequency recording of environmental parameters and the detection of the main infectious agents associated to the oyster...

Benhaim, David.
The farming of aquatic animals has started recently in comparison with that of terrestrial species which domestication started 10 500 years ago. Aquaculture is however the fastest growing animal food-production sector. This sector has now to face several challenges threatening its sustainability. Indeed, aquaculture future largely depends upon the reduction of the reliance on feeds based ingredients derived from wild fishery resources, upon a better knowledge of fish domestication process and of the adaptation mechanisms and related welfare potential. The present work aims at a better understanding of the adaptation to farming conditions through a behavioural approach based on the comparison between wild vs. domesticated populations of three species: a...

Thomas, Yoann.
Understanding key factors determining the bentho-pelagic species larval growth and dispersal remains one of the challenges of marine ecology, notably to understand the adult population structure and dynamics. In the present study, we explore this determinism on the development and dispersal of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii, Linné 1758) larvae in a French Polynesian atoll lagoon (Ahe, Tuamotu archipelago). Rearing of the pearl oyster for the production of black pearls takes on a major social and economic place in French Polynesia. However, the supply of pearl oyster seed to the farms depends entirely on the natural collection of wild spat of the only one specie P. margaritifera, and spatial and temporal variability of spat...

REseau MOllusques des Rendements Aquacoles huitre creuse (REMORA) ; résultats des stations NATIONALES ; Année 2004 ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Simonne, Charlotte; Claude, Serge; Palvadeau, Hubert; Guilpain, Patrice; D'Amico, Florence; Le Gall, Patrik; Vercelli, Catherine; Pien, C.
The network REMORA by IFREMER quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitored 46 sites in 2004, including the 7 new sites added in 2003. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. Globally speaking, the year 2004 was a good year for oyster farming, with a low mortality and a fast growth. The rearing yield (survival x growth) reached 2.0 for adults instead of 1.8 usually. However, the meat index remained close to the average inter annual data....

Prudence, Marie.
Two amylase genes, A and B, from the oyster Crassostrea gigas were characterized. Using PCR-RFLP, 6 and 4 alleles, respectively, were described for the amylase genes A and B. The roles of A and B amylase genes were investigated experimentally. They are expressed during larval and adult stages, and A transcripts are more abundant than B. The A transcript increases significantly with temperature, in high trophic conditions. However, A and B transcript levels do not change when food quantity increases although amylase activity augments. The level of B is correlated with dietary starch quantities, whereas the amount of A appears to remain constant ; simultaneously amylase activity decreases and the KM increases. These results suggest that expression of B is...

ArchiMer
Dormoy, Jean-marc.
Based on a four years survey of Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas growth in the main shellfish farming areas of Brittany from 1989 to 1992, this report is a first attempt to explain the differences between sites and years. The determinist growth models do not suit to this objective, for methodological and practical reasons. Nevertheless, they provide the conceptual basis of a global model by identifying the reliable environmental parameters for a statistical explanation of growth results. The present study proposes a methodology for a global statistical model using the main stages of the ecological and biological processes of shellfish growth. These propositions are based on the analysis of the determinist model's constraints, and also on the identification...

Proteolytic enzymes of hepatopancreas of six species of peneids (Penaeus kerathurus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. stylirostris, P. merguiensis and P. vannamei ) have been studied. Some of their physiological variations have been characterised. Increase in acclimation temperature of crustaceans enhances increase of specific activities of proteases. Variations of salinity does not modify specific activities, nor quantities of trypsin, nor electrophoretic patterns of these different proteases.

The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Results in Brittany, from 1993 to 1998, show that, in a "normal" year, 30 g oysters grow to 60-80 g at the end of the year, with a mortality rate of 10-15%. Mortality occures mainly in...

This report aims to study the oyster Crassostrea gigas growth and production over a 12 years time's span in the Bay of Marennes Oleron. Results of 12 years of oyster growth did not show any significant oyster biological productivity decrease, nor trend. In contrast, annual growth showed a large variability, which will be correlated with environmental conditions. Moreover, annual growth variability was greater than the variability due to site location, but the Ronce experimental site. The later, located in the south west part of the Bay of Marennes Oleron, has been the leading oyster growth site since 1989. The annual shell growth variability was greater than oyster dry meat weight fluctuation. Both 1990 and 1991 years were characterized by the largest...
