Intercropping and sustainability Organic Eprints
Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Kinane, Julie; Trydeman Knudsen, Marie; Jensen, Erik Steen.
Grain legume-cereal intercropping is a method to obtain greater and more stable crop yields, improve the plant resource utilisation (water, light, nutrients), increase the input of leguminous symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) to the cropping system and reduce negative impacts on the environment. However, due to agricultural intensification of plant breeding, mechanisation, and fertiliser and pesticide use over the last 50 years, intercropping has disappeared from many European farming systems. Motivations for reintroducing grain-legume-cereal intercropping relate to the problems faced by intensive farming systems. During the 1980s it became evident that West European agricultural production systems (often characterised by monocultures, nutrient...

ARE HARVEST AND SENSORY QUALITY OF LETTUCE AND ONION INFLUENCED BY GROWING CONDITIONS IN A CONVENTIONAL AND THREE ORGANIC CROPPING SYSTEMS? Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Hanne L.; Kidmose, Ulla; Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Differences in nutrient availability and methods of pest management may affect crop growth and product quality. The question is whether conventional and organic cropping systems, which differ clearly in strategies for nutrient and pest management, influence the harvest and sensory quality of the products? With the aim to elucidate this question, lettuce and onion were grown in a conventional and three organic cropping systems with increasing levels of nutrient re-cycling and use of intercrops for natural pest management in the period of 2007-2009. The conventional and first organic system relied fully on external inputs in the form of NPK or liquid manure for nutrient management, respectively. In the second organic system, low external inputs of liquid...

Yield and quality of organic versus conventional potato crop Organic Eprints
Mourão, Dr. Isabel; Brito, Dr. L Miguel; Coutinho, Dr. João.
The improvement of organic fertilization practices is essential to increase organic potato production in the highland region of NW Portugal, with environmental benefits and better returns. For that reason, the response of organic potato was evaluated throughout a randomized block design experiment, with two cultivars (Raja and Virgo) and increasing rates of composted organic pig manure (0, 15, 30 and 45 t ha-1). These cultivars were also grown with mineral N fertilizer (120 kg N ha-1) under conventional practices to compare the results between crop systems, 30, 45, 60, 80 and 125 days after planting. Crop yield was not improved with increasing rates of compost application because the N mineralization rate of the compost was small and soil organic matter...

Nitrous oxide emissions from organic farming: the importance of well-timed ley cultivation Organic Eprints
Ball, B C.
The period after ploughing of grass-clover within a ley-arable rotation is when nitrogen accumulated during ley cropping is most vulnerable to loss. I investigated how date of ploughing and date of cessation of grazing before ploughing influenced losses of nitrogen as nitrous oxide during establishment of the first cereal crop. Crop nitrogen uptake was also assessed. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in the 1-2 month period after autumn or spring ploughing or after sowing were typically between 20 and 150 g N ha-1 day-1 and increased with temperature and rainfall. Tillage and sowing operations on previously ploughed soil stimulated N2O emissions even several months after ploughing. Cumulative N2O emissions were highest (~8 kg ha-1 over 17 months) after late...

Species interactions between forbs and grass-clover contribute to yield gains and weed suppression in forage grassland mixtures Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Suter, M.; Lüscher, A.; Eriksen, J..
Grass-legume mixtures characterized by high productivity, efficient nitrogen (N) use and strong weed suppression were proposed to increase sustainability of grassland production. Adding competitive forbs to grassclover mixtures can be expected to further enhance the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures. This study investigates whether and to what extent adding forbs to a grass-clover mixture results in yield gains, and estimates the contributions of forb species (identity effect) and interactions with the grass-clover mixture (diversity effect) to these gains. It further examines the effectiveness of weed suppression in forb-containing grass-clover mixtures. Fifteen pure and mixed stands, all comprising the grass Lolium perenne L. and the legume...

Hein, Waltraud; Waschl, Hermann.
In this project, located at Winklhof, a comparison between organic and conventional farming is done. The field trial combines a crop rotation with two levels of fertilisation intensities (one is 1.0 LU ha- and the other is 1.8 LU ha-1). The fertilisation-systems are stable-manure and liquid manure, the treatments were done organically. The aim of this project is to find out which production system is better for the environment in spite of crop yield, product quality and leaching losses. The last parameter was measured in lysimeters. A high amount of yearly precipitation could account the high amount of seepage water. Consequently the leaching losses of both production systems could be compared.

Nematode dynamics under minimum tillage Organic Eprints
Hallmann, Johannes; Schmidt, Jan Henrik; Finckh, Maria Renate.
Agriculture has transformed over the past centuries dramatically to become highly dependent on non-renewable fossil fuels, synthetic fertilizers and plant protection agents. This often occurs at the cost of soil degradation and soil food web disturbance. Future agriculture must not only be productive but also provide ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, pest and disease suppression, nutrient cycling and water storage to become sustainable in the long-term. Sustainability is especially fostered by reduced tillage and the presence of a permanent layer of plant residues. Under such conditions, soil compaction is reduced, soil structure improved, water infiltration enhanced, soil organic content increased and microbial activity stimulated. However,...

Organic crop rotation experiments - short-term versus longer-term results Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Danish experiments with cereal-based organic crop rotations have shown that the short-term results (the first course, up to four years after conversion) are different from those obtained in the longer-term (the second course, fifth to eighth year after conversion). Yield gain from use of manure increased from the first to the second course on a sandy soil, but decreased on loamier soils. Yield gain from leguminous catch crops increased from the first to the second course in a crop rotation without grass-clover. Some of these effects were caused by buffering effects of the grass-clover, other effects were caused by changes in soil fertility over time.

Grain legumes and nitrate leaching: significance and prevention Organic Eprints
Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Jensen, E.S.; Aveline, A.; Crozat, Y..
The amount of internationally published evidence on the effects of grain legumes on nitrate leaching is sparse and some studies may have weak points. Nevertheless, this mini-review indicates that the level of N leaching is 0–20 kg N ha-1 greater after pea than after cereals. Methods to prevent N leaching should be further developed and there is a need to genetically improve the root systems of grain legumes.

An agronomic approach to yield comparisons between conventional and organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Neuhoff, Daniel.
This paper discusses some relevant agronomic aspects related to the productivity of organic farming systems (OFS). In a first step some key requirements to ensure the validity of comparative studies including the consideration of rotation yields and the use of representative amounts of organic inputs are defined. A main chapter is dedicated to the potential of biological nitrogen fixation to substitute mineral nitrogen, which currently covers an estimated third of the total nitrogen input to agricultural field with increasing tendency. To bring forward OA as a sustainable method of food production with high process quality, it is suggested to focus rather on a large scale organic vegetable and fruit production than on global supply of calories and protein.

N supply in stockless organic cereal production under northern temperate conditions. Undersown legumes, or whole-season green manure? Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Henriksen, Trond Maukon; Eltun, Ragnar.
Two systems for nitrogen (N) supply to organic spring cereals were compared under Norwegian conditions. Repeated undersowing of clover in the cereals in four growing seasons was compared to a whole-season green manure in the second year. Cereal yields were higher in the treatments with clover than in the controls. The yield increasing effect of undersown clover was residual. One year of whole-season green manure increased subsequent cereal yields significantly, but not enough to compensate for the loss of yield over the total four-year period. If phytopathological problems can be avoided, repeated undersowing of legumes seems to be more profitable than green manure each fourth year in stockless organic cereal production systems. The soil mineral N...

Yield stability of single and two-clover grass-clover swards at grazing, cutting and different fertilizer regimes Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M.; Søegaard, K..
Increasing plant diversity in grasslands may improve productivity and yield stability. This study investigates in a field experiment, yield and quality of two-species swards of ryegrass/white clover and three-species swards of ryegrass/white and red clover at five different managements representing cutting, grazing, combinations of cutting and grazing and different fertilizer treatments in 1 to 4-yr-old swards. Generally, the three-species mixture produced higher yields than the two-species mixture when swards were young and lower yields when swards were 3 and 4 years old. Fertilizer responses were similar in both mixtures and also rather independent of sward age. The overall mean annual yield increase by slurry application was 1.34 t DM corresponding to...

Einfluss von Zwischenfrüchten auf Nmin-Gehalte im Boden und Ertrag der Nachfrucht Kartoffel auf einem Sandstandort Organic Eprints
Titze, Andreas; Gruber, Harriet.

Ringselle, B.; Berholtz, E.; Magnuski, E.; BrandsÆter, L.O.; Mangerud, K.; Bergkvist, G..
