DAIRY HEIFER MORBIDITY, MORTALITY, AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT FOCUSING ON PREWEANED HEIFERS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Dairy Heifer Evaluation Project ( NDHEP ) was conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS ) from April 1991 through July 1992. A total of 921 producers monitored calves on a daily basis from the first through the eighth week of life; results were extrapolated to the U.S. dairy population. Mortality of heifer calves was examined according to region ( west, midwest, northeast, southeast ). Mortality was highest in the western region ( 9.1 percent ) and lowest in the midwestern region ( 5.6 percent ). Calf deaths were highest in the two quarters October-December and January-March ( 8.4 percent each quarter ) and lowest in the quarter April-June ( 5.2 percent ). The overall average of stillborn calves was 1.6 percent. Calving...

Animal Health Economics. What Can It Do? What Are the Big Questions? AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
It is argued that while considerable development of animal health economics has occurred in recent decades, it has not yet achieved its potential coverage. It has been mostly applied to livestock, particularly livestock used for commerce, and its application to a range of other animals has been relatively neglected. Extending its coverage also requires widening the type of objectives taken into account in the analysis. Furthermore, the main focus of animal health economics has been on the economics of controlling and managing the occurrence of diseases. The economic role of genetics, the environment, nutrition and the comfort of animals in their health ought to be given greater attention. In the case of zoonoses, the economic analysis should be extended to...

Income and Nutritional Effects of the Commercialization of Agriculture in Southwestern Kenya AgEcon
Kennedy, Eileen T.; Cogill, Bruce.
The commercialization of Agriculture is the cornerstone on economic development in the most developing countries. Yet relatively little is known about the income and nutritional effects of increasing commercial Agriculture. The present study by Eileen Kennedy and Bruce Cogill is the first in a series of studies conducted by IFPRI in Africa, Asia, and Central America to assess the effects of the commercialization of Agriculture on production, consumption, and nutrition status. In 1983 IFPRI was invited by the government of Kenya to undertake a study of the production and consumption effects of a smallholder sugarcane contracting scheme in Southwestern Kenya. The resulting study is unusual because it uses a random sample of farmers at various stages of...

The effects of job site sanitation and living conditions on the health and welfare of agricultural workers AgEcon
Frisvold, George B.; Mines, Richard; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
The lack of field toilets on agricultural job sites increases the probability of gastrointestinal disorders by 60%. Adverse living conditions significantly increase the probability of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and muscular problems. These three health problems do not appear to increase the probability that a worker's family is on welfare or lower workers' earnings. Respiratory problems, however, substantially increase the probability that the worker receives unemployment compensation.

MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH-PRODUCING U.S. DAIRY HERDS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Animal Health Monitoring Systems (NAHMS) Dairy +96 Study of dairy herds in 20 states examined herd management practices that varied between high-producing (top 25%) and low-producing (bottom 25%) U.S. dairy herds. Only 100% Holstein herds were included in the study. Within four size categories (30-99 cows, 100-199 cows, 200-499 cows, 500 or more cows) herds were ranked by milk production per cow. High-producing herds were more likely to use Dairy Herd Improvement Association records or an on-farm computer system than low-producing herds. High-producing herds were also more likely to feed a total mixed ration, use forage test results in balancing feed rations, use bovine somatotropin (bST) and/or systematic prostaglandins, and vaccinate against...

Ultrastructural Assessment of the Integrity of the enteric Mucosa of Commercial Turkeys Vaccinated against Coccidiosis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
MRFB,Martins; Mendes,AA; Milbradt,EL; Almeida Paz,ICL; Martins,BB; Fernandes,BCS.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was evaluated the villus integrity of commercial turkeys submitted to coccidiosis prevention methods and challenged with Eimeria field oocysts, using scanning electron microscopy. Sixty BUT 9 female commercial turkeys were distributed in a completely randomized block design split with two treatments: T1- control diet without vaccinations against coccidiosis and anticoccidial drug, and T2- vaccinated against coccidiosis (commercial vaccine). On d 21 of life, all birds of all treatments were challenged with a mixed-species containing E. meleagrimitis and E. galopavonis, via crop intubation with 1 mL of ~20,000 sporulated oocysts/bird. The size of the inoculum was determined in previous experiments. At 27 and 70 days of...

Impact and management of diseases in the propagation of fruit plants Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ventura,José Aires; Lima,Inorbert de Melo; Martins,Marlon Vagner Valentim; Culik,Mark Paul; Costa,Hélcio.
Abstract Well-formed and healthy propagative material is essential for economic success in fruit growing. The health of the seedlings must be ensured during production to prevent the death of plants and spread of pathogens to new areas, which cause an increase in production costs and reduction in yield, with some pathogens making production unviable in the areas where they are introduced. The most viable strategy for disease control in propagative material is the use of resistant cultivars. However, for many fruit cultivars sources of resistance have not yet been identified and in some cases the resistance is “broken” by the emergence of new races of the pathogen. Other measures are also important and recommended in plant propagation, such as the use of...

Detection, transmission and pathogenicity of fungi on Blepharocalyx salicifolius (H.B.K.) Berg. seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Rego,Suelen Santos; Santos,Álvaro Figueredo dos; Nogueira,Antônio Carlos; Kuniyoshi,Yoshiko Saito.
The objective of this study was to identify the fungi associated with the fruit and seeds of Blepharocalyx salicifolius and verify their transmission and pathogenicity to seeds and seedlings. Fungal identification on seeds was made using the blotter test and potato-dextrose-agar but only the blotter test was used for fruit. Fungal transmission to seedlings was evaluated using four replications of 50 seeds planted in vermiculite. The pathogenicity of the fungi, Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Cladosporium sp. Pestalotia sp. and Macrophomina sp. was tested. Potentially pathogenic and saprophytic fungi were found on the fruits and seeds. The transmission of Cladosporium sp. from seeds to seedlings was verified, and Cladosporium sp. Pestalotia sp. and...

Non-hierarchical clustering of Manihot esculenta Crantz germplasm based on quantitative traits Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Oliveira,Eder Jorge de; Aud,Fabiana Ferraz; Morales,Cinara Fernanda Garcia; Oliveira,Saulo Alves Santos de; Santos,Vanderlei da Silva.
ABSTRACT The knowledge of the phenotypic variation of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) germplasm allows the estimative of the genetic variability to support the selection of contrasting genitors. Therefore, the aim of this work was to define homogeneous groups of cassava germplasm based on yield traits, disease resistance and root quality using K-means as a non-hierarchical method. Breeding values estimated by Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (BLUP) were used for the cluster analysis. The number of groups was defined according to the stabilization of the smallest within-group sum of squares. Seventeen clusters were defined to represent the diversity of the germplasm, whose number of accessions ranged from 7 (Group 15) to 69 (Group 9). In general,...
