Dimensões socioambientais do rural contemporâneo. Organic Eprints
Brandenburg, Alfio; Ferreira, Angela Duarte Damasceno; Santos, Leonardo José Cordeiro.

Recently a revised version of the German standard method for humus balancing according to VDLUFA has been published. In contrast to the preceeding version, the method now shall be applicable not only in conventional, but also organic farming systems. In this contribution, we try to define the scope of the three levels of organic matter demand parameters for crops applied in the method, as an applicable definition is missing in the VDLUFA method description. We do so by calculating crop uptake of mineralized humus-N from the balance parameters, and by linking N uptake to yield levels of crops. Further, we calculate humus balances for farming system treatments in the Organic Arable Farming Experiment Gladbacherhof (Villmar,Germany) and test the ability of...

Organic farming and the prospects for stimulating public goods under the CAP 2014-2020 Organic Eprints
Stolze, Matthias; Sanders, Jürn; Kasperczyk, Nadja; Madsen, Gudula.
The 2013 reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the 2014–2020 period aimed to be a flagship initiative for the delivery of more environmental and climate friendly agriculture, encapsulated in the slogan "public money for public goods”. To achieve its environmental and climate change goals, the EU uses key instruments of Pillars 1 and 2 to provide more public goods from EU agriculture. Organic farming is recognised under both instruments for the first time in terms of its contribution to public goods.

How to include on-farm biodiversity in LCA on food? Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Halberg, Niels.
Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of food and agriculture generally include potential effects on global warming, eutrophication, ecotoxocity and acidification some of which again affect biodiversity. However, LCA most often does not include specific indicators of the product’s or agricultural system’s impact (negative or positive) on biodiversity. Using LCA methodology on agricultural products makes it highly relevant to assess the impacts of land use. Some LCA’s include a simple category of land use. This is sometimes interpreted as “nature occupation”. However, if this is the only impact category addressing land use related biodiversity, the LCA cannot distinguish between different forms of agricultural systems, which may differ in their biodiversity impact...

Bedeutung der Winter-Stoppeln für Vögel Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Hötker, Hermann; Jeromin, Knut.
Outside the breeding season, densities of raptors (in autumn and in winter), seed-eating birds (in autumn) and insect-eating birds (in autumn) were significantly higher on organic than on conventional plots. Organic fields more often held stubbles and/or green vegetation in the non-breeding season. On organic farms, carnivorous birds had significantly higher densities both on fields with stubbles and green vegetation. Granivorous birds had significantly higher densities on stubble fields and insectivorous birds had higher densities on fields covered by green vegetation. There was a signifi-cant positive correlation between density of seed mass and density of granivorous birds.

Økologisk landbruk - matforsyning, klima og miljø Organic Eprints
Hansen, Sissel.

The devil is the detail: finding meaning indicators of nutrient management on organic and low-input farms Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Leach, Katharine; Smith, Laurence G; Topp, C F E; Watson, Christine.
In low-input and organic systems, nutrient management is key to ensuring the short-term productivity and the longer-term sustainability of the farming system. Farm-gate nutrient budgets/balances calculate the inputs of nutrients to, and outputs from a system. Hence, they can be used to assess the nutrient use efficiency. Nutrient balances of 69 organic and low-input dairy farms in seven European countries were carried out using a sustainability assessment tool. The tool assesses each individual farm against a number of indicators. Part of the assessment of nutrient management is the calculation of an N,P,K budget, based on physical inputs and outputs for each enterprise. The results show considerable variation in the calculated N,P,K balances. The paper...

Documentation of Soil Fertility Management Practices in Outstanding Certified Organic Farms Organic Eprints
Bautista, Karen; Tenorio, Jovette; Bernardino, Renel; Escalona, Jenny Anne.
In 2010, the Republic Act 10068 or Organic Agriculture Act (OAA) was signed to promote and further develop the practice of organic agriculture in the Philippines. The Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) as one of the implementing agencies of the OAA and National Organic Agriculture Program (NOAP) has a critical role in implementing programs and projects that would provide support services to improve the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of soil and conduct research and development studies on this concern. Recognizing that there is a need to study the different soil management practices in third party certified organic farms, which have received the national award as outstanding organic farm from 20011-2013, the BSWM documented...

The phytotoxic effects and biodegradability of stored rapeseed oil and rapeseed oil methyl ester Organic Eprints
Vauhkonen, Ville; Lauhanen, Risto; Ventelä, Sarita; Suojaranta, Juhani; Pasila, Antti; Kuokkanen, Toivo; Prokkola, Hanna; Syväjärvi, Sanna.
The aims of this study were to determine the phytotoxicity of stored rapeseed (Brassica rapa) oil (RSO) and rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME) after "spill like" contamination on the growth of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and the biodegradability of these substances in OECD 301F test conditions and in ground water. Rapeseed oil and rapeseed oil methyl ester were both stored for a period of time and their fuel characteristics (e.g. acid number) had changed from those set by the fuel standards and are considered to have an effect on its biodegradation. The phytotoxicity was tested using two different types of barley cultivars: ‘Saana’ and ‘Vilde’. The phytotoxic effect on the barley varieties was determined, after the growth season, by measuring the total biomass...

Mahetootmise keskkonnamõjud läbi olelusringi Organic Eprints
Pehme, Sirli; Veromann, Eve.
Euroopas tuleb hinnanguliselt umbes 30% kogu eratarbimise keskkonnamõjudest toidusektorist, kuid näiteks veekogude eutrofeerumisse panustab toidutootmine isegi 60% ulatuses (Tukker jt., 2006). Jätkusuutliku toidutootmise arendamine, mis vähendaks oluliselt keskkonnakoormust, on EL-i strateegiline eesmärk. Keskkonnasõbralike tehnoloogiate valikul tuleb mõõta nende mõjusid läbi olelusringi ehk võtta arvesse ka vajalike sisendite tootmise keskkonnamõjusid. Vastasel korral võib soovitav keskkonnakoormust vähendav muudatus ühes tootmise etapis põhjustada hoopis suuremaid keskkonnamõjusid teises etapis. Artikkel annab lühiülevaate mahepõllumajanduse keskkonnamõjudest läbi olelusringi võrreldes tavapõllumajandusega.

Maricultura e Meio Ambiente: tecnologias, impactos e sustentabilidade. Organic Eprints
Freitas, Rodrigo Randow; Costa, Karla Gonçalves; Silvestri, Fausto.

Environmental impact and macro-economic feasibility of organic agriculture in the Danube River Basin Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Kieft, Henk.
Several studies from the mid-nineties pointed to agriculture as the single biggest nutrient polluter of the surface water in the Danube River Basin (Haskoning, 1994). Following these findings, the EU Phare programme awarded in 1995 a four-year education and research project aimed at introducing and assessing feasibility of organic agriculture in three Danube River countries: Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. So far it is the biggest and most elaborate project on organic agriculture ever implemented in these three countries. The project consisted of a spectrum of training, on-farm demonstration and research/study activities, and prepared strategy papers for policy redesigning. The studies and research performed assessed the impact of organic agriculture on (i)...
