Effects of physiological and management factors on the milk composition of rambouillet ewes Agrociencia
Ochoa-Cordero,Manuel A.; Torres-Hernández,Glafiro; Mandeville,Peter B.; Díaz-Gómez,Marta O..
Abstract The effects of physiological and management factors on the milk composition of Rambouillet ewes under confined management at the Sheep Unit, Agronomy Faculty, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, México, were evaluated. Two treatments were randomly assigned to 45 single and twin-rearing ewes, 2-5 years old: 6 and 8 weeks of lactation, which were the dates when the lambs were weaned. Milk samples were taken during lactation (weeks 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12), and chemically analyzed using standard laboratory procedures for protein, fat, total solids, ash and lactose percentages. Statistical analysis was performed utilizing a model that included the fixed effects of lambing number (LN: 1-3+), birth type (BT: single, twins), lamb sex (LS: ram lambs, ewe...

Annual, seasonal and spatial abundance of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Decapoda, Penaeidae) off the Southeastern coast of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
HECKLER,GISELE S.; LOPES,MATEUS; SIMÕES,SABRINA M.; SHIMIZU,ROBERTO M.; COSTA,ROGERIO C. DA.
We investigated the influence of environmental factors in spatial and temporal distribution of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in Santos Bay and São Vicente Estuary, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Monthly samples were obtained, from May 2008 through April 2010, from four locations in the estuary and four in the bay. No individual was collected in the estuary and this was attributed to the low salinity means recorded in this environment. We collected 109,153 individuals in the bay and there was no difference in abundance between the two years comprised by the study period. The similarity in spatial distribution can be related to sediment grain size that in all sampling locations showed great amount of very fine sand. The largest amount of reproductive...

Germination responses of the invasive Calotropis procera (Ait.) R. Br. (Apocynaceae): comparisons with seeds from two ecosystems in northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LEAL,LAURA C.; MEIADO,MARCOS V.; LOPES,ARIADNA V.; LEAL,INARA R..
Life history traits are considered key indicators of plant invasibility. Among them, the germination behavior of seeds is of major relevance because it is influenced by environmental factors of invaded ecosystem. Here, we investigated how seed traits and seed tolerance to environmental factors on seed germination of Calotropis procera vary depending on the invaded ecosystems in northeastern Brazil. We have tested seeds from two vegetation types – Caatinga and Restinga – to different levels of light intensity, salinity, and water stress. Previous to those experiments, seed-set and morphometric analysis were carried out for both studied populations. We have observed a higher seed-set in Caatinga. Seeds produced in this ecosystem had lower seed moisture...

Different slopes of a mountain can determine the structure of ferns and lycophytes communities in a tropical forest of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
NETTESHEIM,FELIPE C.; DAMASCENO,ELAINE R.; SYLVESTRE,LANA S..
A community of Ferns and Lycophytes was investigated by comparing the occurrence of species on different slopes of a paleoisland in Southeastern Brazil. Our goal was to evaluate the hypothesis that slopes with different geographic orientations determine a differentiation of Atlantic Forest ferns and lycophytes community. We recorded these plants at slopes turned towards the continent and at slopes turned towards the open sea. Analysis consisted of a preliminary assessment on fern beta diversity, a Non Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and a Student t-test to confirm if sites sampling units ordination was different at each axis. We further used the Pearson coefficient to relate fern species to the differentiation pattern and again Student's t-test to...

Temporal and spatial variations in tidepool fish assemblages of the northeast coast of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cunha,Francisca Edna de Andrade; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Nottingham,Mara Carvalho.
Temporal and spatial variations and environmental factors influencing the structure of tidepool fish assemblages were quantitatively investigated at Iparana beach, northeast Brazilian coast. The majority of the tidepool fishes sampled were suprabenthic juvenile individuals of great mobility. We recorded during monthly diurnal underwater visual censuses a total of 4,750 fish from 26 species, represented mainly by partial residents from the families Scaridae, Haemulidae, Gerreidae and Pomacentridae. The number of species and individuals showed significant variability among tidepools as a response to variations in their volume and type of substrate cover. The greatest species abundance and richness associated with rocks covered with algae suggested that...

Structure and composition of fish assemblages from São Sebastião Channel tide pools, southwestern Atlantic Biota Neotropica
Pastro,Gabriela; Dias,Gustavo Muniz; Gibran,Fernando Zaniolo.
Abstract Organisms living in tide pools in the intertidal zone are exposed to daily and abrupt changes in temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and salinity, during tidal cycles. Fish assemblages in tide pools are usually very different from those in surrounding areas; resident species exhibit morphological and ecological adaptations to deal with such a variable environment. In this study, we described the environmental conditions and the fish diversity and composition from four tide pools at the continental margin of the São Sebastião Channel, São Sebastião (23º41'-23º54'S; 45º19'-45º30'W), in southeastern Brazil. Monthly, from January to December 2011, we sampled four tide pools (12 samples per pool), applying a standard protocol to record environmental...

Sensitivity to halothane and its relationship to the development of PSE (Pale, Soft, Exudative) meat in female lineage broilers BABT
Marchi,Denis Fabrício; Trindade,Marco Antônio; Oba,Alexandre; Soares,Adriana Lourenço; Ida,Elza Iouko; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Michelan Filho,Tércio; Ziober,Iris Lamberti; Shimokomaki,Massami.
This work aimed to evaluate female lineage broilers for halothane sensitivity and for their susceptibility to the subsequent development of PSE meat. The halothane test was carried out in an anesthetic chamber with 3.0% halothane. The unconscious birds were examined for leg muscle rigidity. If one or both legs became extended and rigid, the birds were classified as halothane sensitive (HAL+), while unresponsive birds were classified as halothane negative (HAL-). The results showed that of 298 birds aged 42 days old, 95.6% were HAL- and 4.4% were HAL+. A sample of pectoralis major muscle was collected from HAL- (n=105) and HAL+ (n=13) birds. The pH and breast fillet color were determined at 4ºC, 24 hours post-mortem. Interestingly, only 2.5% of HAL+ birds...

Chiappeta,Alda de Andrade; Sena,Kêsia Xisto Fonseca R. de; Cavalcanti,Laise de Holanda.
The influence of environmental factors on sporulation of Fuligo septica (L.) Wigg. and the abundance of this species on sugar cane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum L.), stored outdoors was studied. In Northeastern Brazil, between January/1997 and January/1998, a total of 29 specimens were collected through monthly collections of aethalia. The relationships between the abundance of aethalia and rainfall, temperature, relative humidity of the air and insolation were studied. Results indicated that on the substrate analyzed, F. septica was an abundant species. Sporulation occurred in all seasons of the year, with a well-defined peak at the end of winter and beginning of spring (August/September),which was strongly influenced by rainfall.

An evaluation and partial characterization of a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis ST1 isolated from goat milk BJM
Taheri,Parinaz; Samadi,Nasrin; Ehsani,Mohammad Reza; Khoshayand,Mohammad Reza; Jamalifar,Hossein.
A bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance producing Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis strain, ST1, isolated from goat milk of Iranian origin and with broad spectrum of activity and desirable technical properties was used for evaluating some futures of bacteriocin inhibitory activity. Cell growth and bacteriocin production studies were carried out in MRS medium incubated statically under uncontrolled pH condition. The antibacterial activity presented a primary metabolite pattern and showed a rapid decrease at the stationary phase. Microaerobiosis and capnophily growth conditions resulted in higher bacteriocin production while aerobiosis showed negative effect on both cell growth and bacteriocin production. Bacteriocin production, on the other hand, was favored...

Thermal requirements and estimated number of generations of Neopamera bilobata (Say) in strawberry-producing regions of Brazil Ciência Rural
Kuhn,Taciana Melissa de Azevedo; Loeck,Alci Enimar; Botton,Marcos.
ABSTRACT: The thermal threshold and thermal requirements of Neopamera bilobata were determined, and the number of generations that this species may produce in the main strawberry-producing regions of Brazil was estimated. In a climate chamber (70±10% RH and 12h photophase) at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, or 30±1°C, the development of 120 eggs was monitored until the adult stage, at each temperature. Nymphs were maintained in individual cages and fed on strawberry fruits of the cultivar Aromas. The mean duration and viability of the egg and nymph stages were calculated by estimating the lower and upper developmental thresholds and the thermal constant, and this information was used to estimate the number of generations per year in different strawberry-producing...

Radiation levels of UV-A and UV-B on growth parameters and coumarin content in guaco Ciência Rural
Alves,Luciano; Deschamps,Cícero.
ABSTRACT: Guaco is a medicinal plant species containing coumarin, a secondary metabolite whose concentration is influenced by various factors, such as the level of exposure to UVA (315-400 nm) and UVB (280-315 nm) radiation, age of the plant, and position of the storage organ in the plant. This study aimed to assess the effect of different blocking levels of UVA and UVB radiation on growth parameters and coumarin content of two guaco accessions. Treatments did not affect any of the growth parameters assessed, except leaf area. Coumarin content was higher in leaves collected from the upper canopy and with unblocked exposure to UVA and UVB.

Environmental risk factors related to the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Ciência Rural
Zanini,Danielle Almeida; Kimura,Katia Cristina; Nishiya,Adriana Tomoko; Ubukata,Rodrigo; Leandro,Rafael Magdanelo; Brito,Claudia Prado de; Trombetti,Márcia; Lagoa,Ana Carolina; Macedo,Thais Rodrigues; Rodrigues,Lucas Campos de Sá; Rosendo,Janaína Aparecida da Silva; Arndt,Helen Lyrio; Dias,Ricardo Augusto; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan.
This research aimed to investigate the possible risk factors associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Owners of 83 dogs with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and of 84 healthy dogs answered an epidemiological questionnaire. Dogs who lived outside of the house and within 100 meters of busy streets or avenues (defined as more than 50 vehicles per minute) had a higher risk for developing the disease (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.4-6.9, P=0.005). These results suggest that air pollution derived from vehicle traffic may be associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
