In this project the economic consequences of legislative changes and new technology in organic farming has been examined. Through an interactive process between research experts and agricultural advisors is a technical and biological description of 8 organic case-farms encountering 4 arable, 3 dairy and a single pig farm envisioned (Nielsen et al., 2003). The crop rotation and the production structure of the case farms were chosen as to depict the organic farms of the near future. In order to analyse the consequences on labour input, machinery input and operational cost, case studies have been chosen as the overall methodology. Scenario planning is used as the method of combining factual data and expert evidence to create imaginable and credible scenarios... |

Opportunities to make sequential decisions and adjust activities as a season progresses and more information becomes available characterise the farm management process. In this paper, we present a discrete stochastic two-stage utility efficient programming model of organic dairy farms, which includes risk aversion in the decision maker’s objective function as well as both embedded risk (stochastic programming with recourse) and non-embedded risk (stochastic programming without recourse). Historical farm accountancy data and subjective judgements were combined to assess the nature of the uncertainty that affects the possible consequences of the decisions. The programming model was used within a stochastic dominance framework to examine optimal strategies in... |

The past decades have experienced growing demand for ecolabels displaying environmental and sustainability information, with associated price premiums. With growing number of ecolabels in the markets, strategic positioning is required to attract value. Nevertheless, consumer preference for other attributes, for example, local products appears to be overshadowing the value for ecolabels. A suitable communication and education strategy for consumers is warranted to counteract this effect. Using stated choice experiment, we test for the effect of different types of information regarding organic aquaculture production principles on the demand for portion size trout in the German market, while considering other important product attributes. The results indicate... |

The aim of this network is to study the functioning of organic suckler ewe farms and their technical and economic results. They are compared to conventional farms to point at the specificities of these farms and focus at key determinants. As the context on organic farming is evolving a lot (market, techniques, structures of farms…), these studies are made on the long term. The study is based on a monitoring network of an average 20 organic farms and 35 conventional each year. Economic and technical data are recorded on the farms twice a year and analyzed according the methodology of our unit based on the relationship between functioning, technical data and economic results. The data of some organic farms come from partners institutions and are treated... |

This article presents the main findings of a recent survey of 307 dairy producers and 99 vegetable producers from Western France. Conventional farmers as well as organic farmers who recently switched to organic farming have been surveyed. Our results illustrate the differences between the two groups of farmers in terms of personal characteristics (age, education level, sensitivity to environmental problems) and in terms of characteristics of their farm (size, labor, soil type). Our findings also show that economic factors are the main drivers of conversion to organic farming in the vegetable sector while ideological factors and, above all, technical factors are most important in the dairy sector. |

The rise of socially responsible and impact investing funds provides evidence for an increased interest private investors have in combining their financial and ethical concerns. At the same time, citizens increasingly engage in food networks and take on a vital role in the governance of agri-food systems. These developments might benefit farms and firms which are committed to sustainable food and seek funding. Through different community financing models, they can involve citizens who aim to support the development of a more sustainable food system. This contribution presents case study evidence on community financing in the German organic food sector and discusses the role it can play in food system transformation. |

This report is the third from a series of four economic reports on organic farm incomes from 2001/02 through to 2004/05. The work was carried out by Organic Research Group at the Institute of Rural Sciences, UWA on the economic performance of organic farms in 2003/04 on behalf of DEFRA Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. A fundamental aim of this work is to assess the financial performance of organic farms differentiated by farm type, in order to inform DEFRA policy-making with respect to economics of organic farming, and to provide a basis for assessments by farmers, advisers and other interested parties of the farm-level implications of conversion to and continued organic farming. This research area builds on previous economics work on... |

Sward height is a key parameter for rotational grazing. Influence of different sward heights (low: 8 cm, medium: 10 cm, high: 12 cm) on DM yield and grass growth rate were investigated on an intensive grazed area at the research farm of the Organic Institute of AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein during the vegetation period of 2013. The significant highest yields were found in treatment “high” (12,581 kg DM ha-1) and “medium” (12,119 kg DM ha-1). Treatment “low” reached a yield of 10,343 kg DM ha-1. During summer, grass growth rate was about 60 kg DM ha-1 day-1 in average. |

This is the final report of Defra project OF0169. There is a more comprehensive Executive Summary at the start of the attached main report. The overall objective of this project was to generate the scientific and financial information necessary to facilitate increased production of pigmeat on existing organic farms, and the conversion of conventional farms to this organic production. Information was collected through a series of experiments focusing on the effects of genotype, management and nutrition. The study was conducted on commercial organic pig farms, supported by literature searches, financial appraisal, and survey data collection. Organic production standards favour traditional breeds of livestock in preference to ‘improved’ genotypes, which may... |

There is an increased interest in Europe to develop organic farming systems with reduced tillage intensity. Besides technical and agronomical aspects, the profitability of these systems has to be viable for farmers to achieve a successful implementation in practice. A long-term trial was set up in 2009 at the research station Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon (ART) to compare conventional and organic farming systems with and without ploughing including a full cost calculation to assess the profitability of the different systems. First results show that the highest benefit was obtained under organic cultivation under Swiss legislation. Moreover, production costs were reduced with the adoption of conservation tillage. |
