| Organic agriculture could feed the world, but will it? A state of Otopia, an organic Utopia of 100% organic food and organic agriculture, is a dream, or is it a pipe-dream? And if a dream, then when might it manifest? Two scenarios are presented, extrapolating from the rate of growth of the organics sector achieved over the past decade. Under a geometric rate of growth, Otopia could be achieved in 39 years, whereas under an arithmetic rate of growth, Otopia would take 544 years to be achieved. |

| The objective of this paper is to study in detail the land use and plant cover of an Integrated Agroecological Production System (IAPS) from 2003 through 2005. Four quarterly updating visits were performed on the 26 land units of the System from January 2003 to December 2005. Cartographic documents and QuickBird satellite images were also used to generate the final index maps for agrodiversity, fallow intensity and green manure use intensity. A high diversity of crops was observed. In some land units up to 40 plant species were recorded. However, this diversity was not uniformly distributed throughout the terrain. | Carrot (Daucus carota) shoots were enriched by selenium using foliar application. Solutions of sodium selenite or sodium selenate at 10 and 100 lg Se ml�1, were sprayed on the carrot leaves and the selenium content and uptake rate of selenium were estimated by ICP–MS analysis. Anion and cation exchange HPLC were tailored to and applied for the separation of selenium species in proteolytic extracts of the biological tissues using detection by ICP–MS or ESI–MS/MS. (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) e míldio, severidade de míldio e na produção de cebola, cultivar Epagri 362 Crioula Alto Vale, em sistema orgânico. | Die integrierte Biogaserzeugung in Ökobetrieben zieht vielerlei agronomische Auswirkungen auf das gesamte Betriebssystem nach sich. Herkömmliche Wirtschaftlichkeitsanalysen vernachlässigen jedoch das ökonomische Potential dieser Effekte. Dieser Beitrag verfolgt daher einen ganzheitlichen Bewertungsansatz, der diese monetären Zusatzleistungen mit einbezieht.
