Organic RDD statusrapport for MultiTrust projektet 2013 Organic Eprints

Contribution of Social Network Analysis for evaluating Impacts of Science-Based Research and Innovation Program: The example of the farmers’ conversion to organic crop production in Camargue Organic Eprints
Quiédeville, Sylvain.
This contribution is a methodological research paper that aims to demonstrate the relevance of undertaking a Social Network Analysis (SNA) for ex-post evaluating Impacts of Science-Based Research and Innovation Program (ISRIP) in the agricultural sector. Our study is based on the ISRIP Method, which is derived from the Participatory Impact Pathway Analysis (PIPA). The ISRIP Method is characterized by the organization of stakeholders’ workshops; and SNA is part of the evaluation process. In this paper, we substantially re-question the rationale of undertaking a SNA to help evaluate the impacts, role and contribution of the research through the example of farmers’ conversion to organic crop production in the French Camargue. Our analysis shows the interest...

Ökologische Bewirtschaftung erfordert die Steuerung von innerbetrieblichen Nährstoffflüssen Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert.
Self-organised ecosystems are characterised by a high efficiency in the use of limited nutrient resources whereas the productivity is generally low. To utilise the potentials of agro-ecosystems with respect to a high nutrient efficiency, there is a need to steer the nutrient flow and provide good starting and adaptation conditions for living organisms. While organic standards provide no operational guidelines on how to improve nutrient management, a concept was developed to improve N-efficiency on the farm level. N-import into the farm and N-flow through subordinate sub-systems (‘livestock’, ‘dung storage/ distribution’, ‘arable land/pasture’, and ‘feed storage/distribution’) were assessed on 9 organic and 7 conventional dairy farms, based on farm...

Organic foods trade – a criterion for ecological culture and challenges Bulgaria faces Organic Eprints
Ivanova, Daniela; Vasileva, Elka.
The market of organic foods demonstrates a considerable development in the recent years – from a small niche serving a limited number of customers, today it is a market with increasing consumption. The demand of organic products is the result of consumers’ informed needs for healthy and safe foods and their ecological requirements. This is the most dynamic sector of the foodstuffs market in the world but the share of organic sales compared to the total amount remains around 2%. The paper examines in comparison the possibilities for development of organic agriculture and the organic foods market in Bulgaria in the period of accession to the European union. Based in the assumption that by buying organic products consumers take into account the need of...

A hazai agro-biodiverzitás fennmaradása szempontjából azonban fontos lenne in vivo, azaz termesztési körülmények közötti megőrzésük is. Továbbá előnyös tulajdonságaik (ellenálló képességük, gazdag ízviláguk, jó beltartalmi értékeik) miatt feltételezhető, hogy egyes tájfajták jól megállnák a helyüket a hazai ökológiai termesztésben.

A Postcard from Korea: Worldʼs First Organic Agriculture Museum Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Korea has trumped the world in creating the world’s first organic farming museum. The Namyangju Organic Museum is a surprise - and for several reasons. Firstly, it is surprisingly good. And secondly, it is surely surprising that the world’s first organic agriculture museum appears in Korea? It is a specialist museum of which Namyangju can be justly proud. The museum caters for a variety of ages, from youngsters to oldsters, and for a variety of interests, from casual, to practical, to scholarly. Screen-based techno-interactive exhibits are an obvious hit with children. The Namyangju Organic Museum was launched to coincide with the 17th IFOAM Organic World Congress (September - October 2011), the first such event to be held in Asia. This museum can serve...

Empowered by stigma? Pioneer organic farmers' stigma management strategies Organic Eprints
Lähdesmäki, Merja; Siltaoja, Marjo; Luomala, Harri; Puska, Petteri; Kurki, Sami.
Pioneers of organic farming often faced social challenges as their innovative ideas on agriculture not only encountered opposition in the conventional farming community, but led to stigmatization of organic farmers as social deviants. In this study, we examine what kind of stigma management strategies pioneer organic farmers engage with in order to cultivate an alternative positive image of themselves. Our research is based on the interviews with 14 pioneer organic farmers. Based on a qualitative analysis of interviews, we provide a model of those strategies that the creation of from a stigmatized to valued identity requires. Our study increases the understanding of the institutionalization process of organic farming by demonstrating how pioneer organic...

Supporting local innovation for rural development: Analysis and review of five innovation support funds Organic Eprints
Friis-Hansen, Dr Esbern; Egelyng, Dr. Henrik.
In continents and countries such as Africa and India, huge agricultural areas are "de-facto" organic. More formalised - and knowledge intense - methods of organic agriculture has proved potential help farmers achieve better development returns from farming organic. While not commonly referred to (formally certified) as "organic", this huge agricultural sector mainly depend on farmer-knowledge intensive and local innovation systems very much of the same kind that served development of organic agriculture in the west, before agricultural universities and subsequently governments took interest in participating in developing "organic" agriculture. The aim of this study is to follow up on a World Bank workshop on innovation systems at the community level. Most...
